View Full Version : The Curse of Sunlight Silver....
brothervoodoo 11-21-2003, 06:30 PM Please humor me but I want to point something out; has anybody noticed that the VAST majority of accidents have been with sunlight silver cars.
I know of the first car wreck in Japan was yellow. Some poor chap on this board get rear ended driving his black 8 BUT everything else has been silver....
I will start the first cursed ghost story of the sunlight silver RX-8... (spooky Scooby Doo music in the backgroung).
moRotorMotor 11-21-2003, 06:51 PM hmmm... I own a sunlight silver. I'm curious, does this "curse" come standard on all silver 8s from the factory? lol sorry... But on a serious note, I thought it was red that have the higher accident rate? (at least that is what some studies have shown)
Mr Rabbit 11-21-2003, 07:36 PM Hi. Me thot black RXs involved in more accidents than any other colour? Or did me read wrong?
U may have missed the bad airborne black RX crash? Sheared roof off anor car...
Some pple think it's cos u can't see black that clearly, esp at night.
Would've thot silver is easy to see?

You don't speak english often, do you?
jtimbck2 11-22-2003, 06:33 AM Silver cars often "blend into" the road, in my opinion. Of course sunlight silver is brighter than the average silver, so that may not apply.
MazdaManiac 11-22-2003, 08:36 AM There was a study done by "Consumer Reports" a few years back where they determined that silver was the least visible color choice for a vehicle, especially in overcast or rainy conditions.
I know when I see a silver vehicle, it is often difficult to judge its distance and speed without another vehicle traveling with it for reference.
Shocka 11-22-2003, 09:01 AM hmm so where does this put the Tit Gray?

I second that. I have a 02 Ford Exploder with the rollover and ligitigation package in the light grey and it's been tagged twice.

English 11-22-2003, 05:54 PM I agree with voodoo daddy, I think silver is tough to see especially in overcast conditions.....but then again, as this photo shows, black may be hard for some to pick out also.
brothervoodoo 11-22-2003, 06:04 PM That's another nasty rearend English and also a different vehicle than the one I referred to. :(
Astor 11-22-2003, 06:06 PM Mine is silver and someone clipped the back after they ran a stop sign, it was dark and foggy and I don't think the color mattered, they just didn't see a 5 lane hwy and ran a stop sign right into it. Light damage though, should have it back Tuesday, in the meantime I'm stuck with a Grand Marquis

Didn't that one swap ends into a pole with the guy wire slice-dicing it? I remember that the white thingy that became one with it was wrapped around the guy wire...
Magic8 11-24-2003, 10:22 AM It may not be a curse, it may be a simple fact that silver is a popular color. More silver cars on the road mean more chances for accidents to happen with silver cars.

cruzdreamer 11-24-2003, 04:41 PM I think it's Grey and RED!!! I had my first red car before the 8(protege5) and within the first six months someone rear ended me at a stoplight! I have Sunlight Silver and it's is pretty bright so I am hoping it is more visible than most silver cars! It sure turns heads! Grey is a dull darker color...hard to see in overcast conditions.....and red...not sure why...cuz they are speed racers??
MazdaManiac 11-24-2003, 05:06 PM If date-of-first-impact plays into this argument, I take the prize.
I was rear-ended (only a light tap; no damage) as I was driving the RX-8 home after I bought it.
Stop and go traffic on the beltway and this guy was following real close and braking real late. I could see his face clearly in the rear-view and he made me nervous - he kept closing his eyes like he was falling asleep.
Sure enough, on the next 6" creep foward in traffic, he closes his eyes, lets off the brake and BONK.
12 miles on the odometer - Black GT RX-8.
I don't think the color was a factor...
Kaliken 11-29-2003, 08:44 PM I thought that silver colors had that reputation back in the 80's when the silver was pretty much straight metal color like the "Delorean" in the Back to the Future movies. Their lack of a real color made them seem to pick up the color of the road. at least thats what I have experienced.
but anyways.. I am still happy with my purchase of the sunlight silver though! Looks very classy.. :)
mazdabob 09-12-2004, 11:22 PM I revived this old thread because the curse apparently is not just for Mazdas. The first C6 Corvette involved in a crash was........ you guessed it - silver!

mazdabob 09-12-2004, 11:45 PM Batman is safe - his car is black.
Xyntax 09-13-2004, 12:04 AM Whoa this is scary. We had this same thread at solaraguy where most accidents happened to the Silver ones too. I kept crossing my fingers coz I have silver one too. Fortunately, no accidents and it should stay that way!
Outlaws eXtreme 09-13-2004, 12:59 AM Wanna scare the bejesus out of the other Titanium owners brothervoodoo? Start a new thread saying it's the grey... :P
I wonder if there is data of how many of each RX-8 color has been sold, and data of how many accidents of each color... etc.
Morgan 09-13-2004, 01:30 AM wow...I remember when this thread was alive for the first time! lol! umm..I agree it's silver..mostly b/c my cars been hit..lol! When i'm driving and its raining pretty badly (thats like an every day occurance in fla) people tend to not see me...my friend was behind me and he goes, "omg, when we got to the rain, you disapeared! I hardly saw your rear lights..it wasn't until you turned on your flashers i could even see you!" So ive learned that anytime it is raining badly to turn on my hazards to show people i exsist!!!! Stupid silver cars...
hotpot 09-13-2004, 02:01 AM You must be color blind. Your avatar shows a red 8. :)
Red should be fine.

hotpot 09-13-2004, 02:03 AM Install a rear foglight. We don't want anybody to rear-end our hun.;)

Nope, not color blind. I have a Red 8, but I also have a Silver Solara. Sorry, I wasn't clear about that part.
hotpot 09-13-2004, 03:04 AM I guess if I drove a Solara, I wouldn't brag about it neither. :)
Nice avatar btw.

magixpuma 09-13-2004, 09:00 AM I blame it on my state most drivers from jersey are rude arragont duesch bags excluding me of course..... eh
shelleys_man_06 09-13-2004, 09:21 AM Holy crap! I haven't seen this thread in a long time. That sucks to have your brand-new C6 Corvette wreck in such a short time. Hell, I didn't even know they were out yet (haven't seen on in Houston).
I haven't seen or heard any stories of damaged Ti Grays, except for titaniumgrey's. I'm going to paint my car royal purple, or gold.
