Well, It's official...............Doc just called and left a message on the phone. After the CT Scan, I have re-broken my heel. :banghead:

For those that don't know, I first broke it surfing on April 10th, in a cast until early June, so I had to rent an automatic for those two months. Then I had a walking boot until early in July, but at least I could take that off to drive my manual.

Original thread = http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=143307

Okay, so I go to the Doc about July 1st and all looks good and we discuss that I can now use tennis shoes and just take it easy on it. So......I drive home that day and since I didn't have anything but my boot with me and was just going into the house for a second and back out, I would just kinda hop into the house(as I had done numerous times before). Anyway, as I'm hopping, my good foot catches the top of my 8" threshold going into the house and I landed on the bad foot. Somehow(because of the pain involved), I knew I had really hurt it again. I waited for one whole day before I called him because I thought I might have just really stressed the Achilles. It was so swollen, I kinda knew better. I then go in for X-rays the next day. Oh yeah........I had to drive my car in to see him and I cannot begin to tell you how painful that was!
So...........when I get there, he is appalled at the swelling and purpleness, so he orders a CT scan................which I just had this morning.

And there ya go....................looks like I have to start the whole process over again. :banghead:

He just left a message as I said and I'm supposed to stay off it all weekend(oh really?) and keep taking my pain pills(Yipee!).

So I'm not sure, but from our discussions earlier this week, I do not believe the break is in the same location.

Probably means another month or two not being able to drive my 8 unless I figure something out.
You can bet I'm getting something from him this time so that my insurance will cover the rental car!!!!!

Can't believe this with all I've done in my life, and all the dangerous shit I've done that this is the first time I've ever had to go through this crap. Unfortunately for you all, I'll probably means I'll be posting a little more as I'll probably work from home a lot, so you'll have to put up with me. :uhh:

Think I'll be doing a lot of "Search Noob" for awhile................so what will nycgps do?

End of Rant

Thanks all......yeah I'm pretty depressed at the moment, but WTF else am I gonna do?

Linda.......you can bet on that. I already talked to one or two and they are willing and happy to come and help out. :)

Taj...........I expect no less! That's what both my kids said...........WTF dumbass.....you did it to yourself.

Nuke...............Yeah.......imagine after three months! As soon as it happened....I pretty much knew.

Paul...........It would be better if I was in Hawaii, but then I'd wanna surf even more. Have a few friends on the North Shore, and one on Kauai, but probably wouldn't be wise. BTW.....you should like Honduras!
You know where and for how long? Belgium will be cool as well.

I am seriously thinking that if insurance won't pay for a rental, I may just go buy a friggin automatic beater small truck or something. Guess I'll wait till Monday to see what's up with the Doc, but am gonna start looking online tomorrow, because I was thinking about it well before the original issue back in April.
Any ideas? I'm open to suggestions. Thinking small truck to move crap in when I need to do so.

Damn, sorry to hear that. After I tore my achilles, I stayed in a cast for a full 3.5 months (of which I had a walking boot over the cast for about 6 weeks?) but your doc put you in a boot without cast after only two months, then bare foot with boot?

That surprises me......two months doesn't seem like a long time to be in a cast.......course, my treatment was a little different since I only had a tear, not a full separation, and I went the non-surgical route.

Hopefully you just have a tear and not a full separation.

Look on the bright side.......handicap parking, handicap seating at concerts and such, people opening doors for you. :)

Oh yeah........I will at least for a temporary. And believe it or not, am also working with company just to work from home if insurance won't pay for a rental car this time. I got the money, that's no issue, I just don't want to spend another two months on a GD rental car. Maybe it's time to buy that beater truck I've been thinking about???????

Well Feras, here's how the Doc visit went.

Went into the room and the assistant got all the cast stuff ready. I was going to go with blue this time for the hell of it.

Doc comes in and covers the results of the CT scan(no picture). As best I can remember there is indeed a new fracture and he said "it was prior to the original break".........whatever that means............and I asked twice. I asked if it was an extension of the original break and he said "No", but prior to it, so I didn't pursue any further, but he did say something about that it was closer to the Achilles and that scared him.

Anyway, he was way more concerned about the apparent loss of bone density that my foot seems to be showing through this ordeal and therefore, he didn't want to really immobilize it again with a cast.

So..........I am to wear my moon boot(even to sleep), put no more than 20lbs for a week or two and then increase slowly. I also have to take 1200mg of Calcium/Vitamin D supplement along with a prescription nasal spray that enhances the Calcium pills(not sure of the name). I already take one-a-day for men.....but oh well.

Besides that he is concerned enough about my bone density loss during the last fiasco that he believes it will be better not casted and to keep it moving around a little bit(blood flow?). He is also going to call my regular Doc about the bone density loss, so I know I'll be hearing from them. Guess pushing 50 and never having any issues might be catching up with me, but I won't stop being active........I just need to heal and then address whatever is going on.

We also discussed driving my car and he thinks that will be okay. He mentioned he thought I could do it with the boot on, so I'll try that tomorrow and if not......I'll take it off to drive like I was before this last stumble/crash.

So...............over all...........not too bad and I feel pretty good about it.

Well this is good news. I know you'll be careful driving the 8. The pain of a rebreak is worse than that of a new break because the old one is still healing, and you'll be putting even more pressure on that already sensitive area.

I've been looking for a beater because I'm @ 34K and the car was 2 years old 2 weeks ago! Need to slow down a bit, and put the money in mods that I want to do instead of my fuel tank! :D

I'd do it.......what the hell. Ping....Ping...Ping. Can I have a hat to wear with that on it?
Hell...........I'd even pay for gas.

Driving with this boot could be interesting because..............

1.) I already were a size 11 and this dam boot is pushing about a 13.

2.) Gonna sound stupid, but being in Florida we drive barefooted a lot, so I'm gonna miss that feeling, but I do drive it with shoes when going to work,,,,so I'll manage or just take it off to drive.

Although, I did back it up and move it to my unattached garage the other day using the right foot on the clutch and the hand brake.........so I'll manage. :)

Now that I don't have to have the cast, I think the beater is on the back burner again(for awhile)................unless I just luck into a deal. Gonna keep my eyes open.

Dave, When I bought my 8, I was wearing a boot because I broke the 5th metatarsil on my left foot. I can't remember if you tried driving with the boot on yet, but I found that there wasn't enough room down by the pedals to wear the boot and drive. I just couldn't get the clutch down all the way. With my break, it wasn't a big deal though, so I took off the boot and pushed on the clutch with my whole foot instead of bending it at all. Whenever I can, under normal conditions, I drive with bare feet too.

07-14-2008, 11:06 PM
Yeah.......I think you're right, but it was so damn long ago(only a month), I can't remember. I'll find out in the AM I guess.
I do remember I could do it with the cast, but was kinda sketchy as the peddle would slide between the foot and the cast.

08-19-2008, 04:29 PM
damn Dave, bone density?! YOu'll do ANYTHING to stay home from work...

All kidding aside: sorry to hear about this sudden twist. Hopefully all the vitamins / supplements will help PLUS it gets you out of that GD rental car and out of a cast.

How's the weather? Getting worse?

Mazurfer
08-19-2008, 06:33 PM
Thanks Jorge,

Weather about the same, comes and goes with some good gusts(+60mph) and loads of rain. Will be clear by late tomorrow. Weak center is expected to pass right over me at around midnight tonight.

Foot...argh! So sick of it since....been since April 12th!
I'm now out of the cast and have been for sometime, so that allows me to drive the 8.
I got off the crutches only last week and it hurt like hell to shift up until about a week ago.....and I can still feel some, but not too bad.
Two more weeks in the boot and then I should be free and clear.........I hope!

FINALLY

two weeks to go, hang in there!

Mazurfer
08-19-2008, 06:40 PM
Now it's frickin pouring again....this keeps up, I'll have to paddle to work in the AM!

Yeah...........I got lazy today and said screw it, used the weather as an excuse and stayed home. I walked without crutches on Sunday and Monday for the first time in 5 months and my foot and leg took a real beating! The muscles in that leg are 1/2 the size of the good leg now and of little use. The ONLY exercise it got was pushing in the clutch over the last month or so. Taking that boot off evertime I get in the car and then putting it back on when I get out was a real pain........including putting the crutches in and taking them out. I'll be glad to get rid of that crap! :)

Phil,

Quite honestly..............after what will be almost 6 months with back to back breaks, I'm not sure what I would do if it was to happen again. With two weeks left to go, I'm being very, very careful as I can't see myself going through another 6-8 weeks. I mean that in all sincerity.........this has not been fun either mentally or physically.

Jorge..............interestingly enough, the Doc has said that I really didn't have to do so(therapy). So.......I will just build on it slowly.
Oh...and although there are far worse of people than me with this nagging little thing I got going on............I will say this. I had no choice so it's kinda funny how you have to accept it or you might as well go through yourself off a bridge!

Ah, this is so grotesque - bet you were jogging before you broke the first bone and had something like shin splints....

This is a great excuse to do seafood - like lobster, oyster stew and clam chowder, also those little sardines that they can with the bones inside them...The calcium is balanced with phospherous and is chelated (attached) to proteins that can help deliver it.

Try not to dance around too much - it has to let the natural glues set that holds bone peices together...

Your leg will come out all flakey and smelly - and I bet the boot wears out before they can cut it off...
