Hello everything, i am thinking of getting a rex in the next month. I researched it and i know it needs more car (oil checks, Warming up...etc) I was wondering if there are any mid-mile problems with them? I cannot afford a new so i was looking at 04's with around 30-40 thousand miles. If anyone has anything else to comment or that i should look for before i buy one i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks i look foward to joining the club.

Simply.....do some more searches, and I would recommend an 05 or higher. Also, no matter what year, make sure it dets checked out by a qualified mechanic first.......and make sure all recalls have been performed. They can all be found on this site as well.

i have a 04 since jan 05. just make sure the car has all the updates done, and enjoy :). also i have 50k on mine now, had no problems with it, pretty much just keep up with the oil etc and you should be fine.

Yes. There is a recall to replace the engine if necessary due to lack of lubrication. It is affecting mostly '04's. My advice (and I have an '04) is get an '05 of newer. You're covered under warranty but don't go through the hassle if you don't need to.

Same maintenance as any other car check oil etc the only difference is that it needs to warmed up before you shut it off or it will flood....good luck and welcome to the addiction

Thanks all, Also they take non synthetic 5w-20 correct? What about 03's? Do they have the lubrication problems as well?

they all have this lubrication "problem" you bring up. its how a rotary works. I check my oil levels every other fill-up.

best advice so u dont get flamed, search. pretty much nothing un-asked on this board since it has been around for YEARS.

The problem is the amount of oil that the original PCM program was injecting. There have been updates to the PCM program since the original recall in mid '06 where they are now injecting more oil. So anything before mid '06 will have had too little lubrication at some point. Whether or not it was enough to cause damage is tough to say. Basically if the engine has already been replaced you should be in good shape. If not I would be wary and ask that the recall check be performed and find out if an engine replacement under warranty is needed before making a purchase decision.

The US owners manual says non-synthetic 5w-20 but many folks here have moved to 10-30 or 10w-40. Some of the rebuilds of the longer life engines have found scoring of the e-shaft journal bearing due to insufficient oil film strength. Search: expo1's rebuild.

I'm not trying to scare you off. Just make an informed decision and go into it with your eyes open. I've had my '04 since day one and love it just as much as I did when it was new. I've had the motor replaced under warranty and the new motor is great. Who wouldn't want a new motor at 50K miles anyway.:)
