View Full Version : Hmm major in?
DavidR 07-09-2008, 09:33 AM Ahh, I'm about to head to college and I have no clue what to major in. At first I wanted to get into mechanical engineering, then petroleum engineering, and now since I love cars I was thinking mechanic, but I don't wanna be that either. I love cars, and I don't want to get into a job that I'll hate you know? I also want to be paid decent, which the first two cover. Any suggestions? lol. :banghead:

SideOfBacon 07-09-2008, 09:39 AM i suggest not doing your passion for a career. it really kills the "love" for doing it. I tried to go that route with cooking. had a passion for possibly getting my degree in bus admin and the going to a culinary school for 2 years and looking into going partnership into opening own restaurant. worked in one for 1.5 months and HATED it.. glad I didnt pursue it for career. medical field is where the money is really going right now. male nurse, medical engineering, microtech, etc. can decide later down the road. if you are going for BA, you have a ton of general ed that will have to be fulfilled so you can decide further down the road.
DavidR 07-09-2008, 09:45 AM Hmm, my aunt told me about actuary science, and that the guy who works with her he just started and his salary started off at 57k.
I worked for the food industry as a server and the cooks were always stressed, kinda sucked lol. Lol, it seems everyone is going into the medical field, but it seems boring to me. I dunno, like I don't have to decide now, but I need to choose my core classes, and if I did decide what I wanted to major in, I could choose the courses that would most favor it.
dillsrotary 07-09-2008, 09:47 AM can't go wrong with engineering, plus you will not have to choose a specific engineering field till 2 or 3 year

like i said, there are general education that will be outside your core that will have to be fulfilled, can start with those freshman year (ie: psych101, sociology101, mathmatics, science credits, etc). the medical field needs them now, but it will diminish. so if u do it, do it now :P. just like CIS was a huge course in last decade with booming computer industry. now the field is over saturated with IT prof.

be prepared to have little to no social life when studying for the exams :-P
dmc27 07-09-2008, 09:59 AM Changed my major 3 times before I graduated w/a CIS degree. Ask if they have underwater basket weaving as a major. It'll be fun, and show how serious you are about your education. lol.
Engineering is a great way to go. There seems to be more & more jobs in the field available & less people to fill them each year. Translation = $$$$
Sciences are always good, too, for the same reasons. Less & less students graduating w/these types of degrees.
It would be a good idea to consider a double major or at least a minor/concentration in some sort of Business Admin or CIS/MIS or whatever 3 letter acronym that = computers.
SideOfBacon 07-09-2008, 10:07 AM ^ yup... i ended up getting 2 minors, 1 associates and a BA because I flipflopped so much as well as knew it would open doors as far as job goes
minor 1: mathematics
minor 2: sciences (sociology and psychology)
associates: CIS
bachelors: business administration
DavidR 07-09-2008, 10:08 AM Hmm, yeah, I'll probably go with engineering for now. lol. Thanks!
RX7joey 07-11-2008, 07:55 PM you do have some time, I'm about to be a senior at Kent State and I tell everyone who wants to graduate "on time" in 4 years, that transfering schools, and switching majors will add a few semesters onto your college career, so think about what you really want to do. Nobody wants to stick around for another year or two, it costs too much money anyways.
Mazurfer 07-11-2008, 07:59 PM It doesn't matter, you will most likey change it multiple times anyway and don't have to declare it now. The most important thing to remember and do is...............show up for class, tell yourself you will graduate, believe in it, and make it happen. I ended up with a EE and then went on after that when I entered the workforce.
rglbegl 07-11-2008, 08:10 PM Underwater basket weaving!

Yeah, I'm stuck at Mechanical Engineer, Petroleum Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, Geologist. Thing is, I was following the curriculum for mechanical engineering, but there's a lab required called CHEM 1117 and there's no more available spots open for it to enroll into. The curriculum requires me to havea lab so I'm not sure of what to do. Should I just choose some other CHEM lab? CHEM 1117 is Fundamentals of Chemistry Laboratory.
