I have been playing World of Warcraft online for a couple years. In that time, I have made a good grp of online friends, some of which I have never met. I do however play 1-2 times a week with them, talk with them via Vent and while our interaction is not physical there is a friendship that develops. I know this now more than ever because one of my online friends has been killed in a car accident and it is affecting me more than I would have thought it would. He has a wife and a 10 yr old son (which plays, although maybe not anymore) and I wish them well and hope their healing is fast. RIP Chris Romero AKA Legond.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. If anything like that happened to anyone here (most people I have never met), I would be very sad as well.

Sorry to hear such horrible news. My heart goes out to the family & friends - online or otherwise.
Much less important, but on the topic: It seems like an interesting phenomenon, but in reality friends have always been made the same way. Interacting together, usually as a result of common interests. Technology makes interacting over any distance possible, whereas in the past we were only able to interact based on proximity restrictions like living in the same neighborhood & going to the same school.

It's always difficult for people outside the mmo/gaming world to understand how something like this takes place and how it develop real friendships.
I know of a family who is spread out over the US and one of their means to stay in contact is to play wow/lotro. The family gets on and chats over vent while playing. I think it's a pretty cool way to keep in touch with your kin.
