Well started about 2 weeks ago, i hear a grinding metal noise/loose metal when i get up to about 6800 RPM's which continued till redline. At first i just thought it was the ports opening up but did some reading and a lot of driving and decided to take it in when i noticed i needed the new oil pan. Strange thing is it would only make the noise underload so i couldn't sit in the driveway and do it. Showed the tech he noted it and took my car to fix oil pan. I came back later to pick up my car and asked what the noise was, they said the cat was dead (all i got out of them, don't think they even know what was wrong with it) and needed to get a new one. Hopefully its just a defective cat and not a redudent issue with anyone elses cats.

I usually drive between 5k-7k RPM's (depending on my mood and traffic i'll shift between 7k-9k), a lot of WOT not sure if my driving style effected it at all. /shrug

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Sounds like the catalyst started vibrating around inside the shell of the converter, or maybe a heat shield loosened up and they just replaced the whole thing anyway...

thanks for the info avital!

I get a bit of a shrilling noise up in the high rpms.... I just assumed it was the 3rd ports opening, too. Could very well be, but something to point out to my dealer service!

Do you think the dealer just wanted to take advantage of the free maintenence and warranty of the new 8's??
