View Full Version : GI: Cobb Dyno Day in GTA
rx8thunder 06-22-2008, 06:50 PM Want to see if we have enough interest to get MazdaManiac (Jeff) up here in Toronto. For those that do not know, Jeff is the leading "custom map maker" for Cobb AccessPort. When he does a tuning session, your car goes on the dyno for 2or 3 runs while he dials it in with a custom map for your car. If you bought the Cobb AccessPort from him (http://www.mazdamaniac.com/cobb/accessport.htm), you do not have to pay for his time to tune. However, collectively, all who attend the event need to help pay for Jeff's travel costs and the costs for rental of dyno location.
If you don't have a Cobb, you can just sign up for the Dyno runs
Most we could handle is 10 dyno/tunes and 4 dynos. If we got all 14 slots filled, cost per person would be about $150, give or take.
Location options: discussed on page 2 of thread..
Sept 13th is the date!
Would need to firm up date soon before Jeff's calendar fills up. Interested? Please add your name below and indicate which dates work for you and whether it is for both Cobb + Dyno or just Dyno:

rx8thunder 06-22-2008, 09:02 PM ^ Alex, add your name to the list if you are interested so that we can start getting momentum forward.
My hope is that there are many thinking about getting a Cobb and perhaps this will push them over the edge. GTA is a big market, so I'm optomistic.
Perhaps we could do it at a place that does mods and turn it into a Mod and Dyno day.
I hope to have a few new items by then.
Put me down for a dyno only Scott.
Alternatively if you get enuf peeps that want the Cobb-Tune by Jeff you can put me on a standby list.
MazdaJeff 06-22-2008, 10:14 PM I might be interested to drive down for the day. I would have to know the exact weekend well in advance though.
I would be down for a tune, but I have a turbo and an intercepter X.
rx8thunder 06-22-2008, 10:29 PM ^ we will firm up the date as soon as we can (enough interest). To get a tune from Jeff, you will need to get a Cobb.
Kafka 06-23-2008, 02:40 AM I will have my car by July and would love to go as well.
Please put me in.
One question tho...these can be unplugged to OEM if needed? I know it can clear codes...but can it put it back to flash X or whatever when there are some warranty work required?
I am not going to make big turbo and all, I just want to know if we can have this covered and no surprises...
Thanks.
TurboEight 06-23-2008, 02:48 AM yea, it can be fully unintalled, all back to default OEM setting/maps.
TurboEight 06-23-2008, 02:49 AM You can put me down as well in your main thread.
i would like to know around how much to get jeff here...
laythor 06-23-2008, 04:42 AM just an FYI. we started a thread like this for west coast and Jeff came in and said to have one person organize and they should first secure location and price for 8 hours. Check out the thread for his replies in the west coast forum.
MazdaManiac 06-23-2008, 06:18 AM ^ we will firm up the date as soon as we can (enough interest). To get a tune from Jeff, you will need to get a Cobb.
I can do Int-X (Microtech), Haltech, Motech, Bosch, GReddy and AEM as well.
It just wouldn't be "free" like it is for the AccessPORT folks.

Thanks for the "heads up". I will we organize the event. Location will not be an issue. We just need to firm up interest and pick a date. I will take care of the rest. I will open an official thread with all of the details, when the time comes.

Jeff, thanks for stepping in, I didn't realize you tuned so many different devices.

Good stuff Alex, I will add you. For the purpose of estimating $150 per person, I assumed Jeff's travel and accomodation costs were $1200, all in. I'm hoping that this is the worste case scenario. We'll do everything possible to kep it as low as possible.
Kafka 06-23-2008, 10:25 AM beer is free for jeff btw...ONLY after the tuning is done lol

Which shop are you thinking?
RedefineRX8 06-23-2008, 12:01 PM I would really think about driving out there for this depending on exact location, dates, and cost.

That is no problem. I would gladly pay for a quality tune.
RedefineRX8 06-23-2008, 08:59 PM count me in, I'll just harass theif while I'm up there.
cobb tune + dyno
rx8thunder 06-23-2008, 09:29 PM Which shop are you thinking?
Got a few in mind (RPM, Street Power, Magnus Motorsports) but have just begun the hunt so if you have any suggestiuns, please fire away...
BlueFrenzy 06-23-2008, 09:36 PM Dang! If only I still lived in Toronto, I'd sign up so fast!
rx8thunder 06-23-2008, 09:44 PM ^ Unfortunate. Guess you'll have to move :)
rx8thunder 06-23-2008, 10:01 PM FYI, MM tuned WCS's Cobb in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and this is how he responded to my question about whether the Cobb tune made a real difference...
"oh yeah... responsive and power all the way through the range... I would even hazard to say that I can feel more low end power..... but above 4.5k rpm it's quite noticable"
Marketing 101: Testimonials :)
TurboEight 06-23-2008, 11:34 PM RPM ftw!!
qtwre 06-24-2008, 09:46 AM Did I miss the part where RPM installed a dyno?
I would like to suggest TAG in Oakville right by the Ford plant.
^^^^ I was wondering the same thing
Kafka 06-24-2008, 10:00 AM Anyone dyno their car BEFORE mods ?
I am going to dyno it with everything stock...and see if my engine comes up with 170hp or 190hp....
lets hope the rotary god was smiling on my wanke...when it was being made lol

They have the facility to bring it in where required. Will add TAG to the list of options. Are you going to sign up qtwre?

it just make you more sad to see the baseline...:banghead:
qtwre 06-24-2008, 01:26 PM Sure, consider me signed to show my interest.
rx8thunder 06-24-2008, 10:51 PM Things are filling up nicely so I am going to try and nail down the details early to mid next week and get an official thread going. All of those signed up on this thread will have first dibs on time slots in the official thread.
It will be a great meet!
TurboEight 06-25-2008, 12:09 AM Woot...*waits for update(

I just want to know my car's current state...and Cobb AP can check the car's reading(in car dyno too?) so its great. I am viewing Cobb AP more as a dignaostic tool first, tuning second haha.
My old VW has OBDII VAG-COM and it was marevllous...not as powerful as Cobb AP tho...
Bump --
boy this thread sure lost it's steam....
you guys should go buy Civics's
rx8thunder 06-29-2008, 10:50 AM Going to open up an official thread soon. Need to nail down some details next week.

qtwre 06-29-2008, 10:15 PM Going to open up an official thread soon. Need to nail down some details next week.
Any chance you would like to share some of these details you're planning? Approximate date you thinking of? Have you thought of a shop?
rx8thunder 06-30-2008, 12:27 AM ^ Gathering info from shops (interest, facilities run down, price and available dates) and firming up date options and travel costs for MazdaManiac. With shop, date and costs nailed down, we can firm up our plans
It's my understanding from everyone that responded, that all of teh potential dates are fine with exceptiion of Jay, who can only make the September date. If this is incorrect for any of you that showed interest, please let me know ASAP.
rx8thunder 07-02-2008, 06:06 PM Hey Guys, bit of an update. There are two shops that have agreed to host so far. Still working on the other two. One shop is RPM. It would not be at their own facility but is very close to their shop. Cost is $700 for the day. The other shop is TAG in Oakville. They charge on a per car basis -- with tuning time built in, cost per car would likely run $75 to $80.
Next steps:
1. Get buy in and pricing from other shops (this week)
2. Confirm date (looking like Sept 13) and travel costs with Jeff - Mazdamaniac (this week)
3. Get group consensus on location (weekend)
4. Launch official thread (Mon)
rx8thunder 07-04-2008, 11:17 PM Ok, so Sept 13 is the date. Jeff has booked it off and we have two locations to choose between. Other locations have been removed from consideration because of either cost or capability.
Option 1:
Splitfire Performance
Located in Bramption - 220 Rutherford Rd South
Dyno: In ground. Very new model with the latest software (224 Dyno Jet)
Lot's of space for many cars to hang out and quiet streets for runs
Stores/Food within 5 minutes
Cost: $1000 for the day
Option 2:
RPM (available for mods)/ Dyno location few minutes away
Located in Waterloo
Dyno: In ground. Older model but apparently gets the job done (don't have model number for it)
Lot's of space for many cars to hang out and quiet streets for runs
Stores/Food within 15 minutes
Cost: $700 for the day
So as you can see, here are the pros/cons of each option...
Splitfire: closer to GTA and newer dyno
RPM: $300 less expensive ( assuming 12 guys, that works out to $25 a head.
So which option do you prefer?
Gecko69 07-04-2008, 11:27 PM I want in on this....I will beat the shit out of this car before I return it.....sign me up for it....if I dont have the car by that point I will just forfit the cash.....anyways, sign me up yo!!.....will be interesting to see the difference between a car with and without the access port
rx8thunder 07-04-2008, 11:30 PM ^ You got it. Location preference?
Gecko69 07-04-2008, 11:48 PM both look good......I assume I cant be tuned....I dont have an access port so tuning my car will be a bit of a challenge I assume....both these places aren't at the same location are they?? both have the same address?
rx8thunder 07-05-2008, 01:19 AM ^ Good catch. RPM is in Waterloo. I will get Jeff to answer your question about tuning
MazdaManiac 07-05-2008, 03:16 AM Since customs might be a bit tricky if I am carrying unboxed AccessPORTs in my carry-on, I'd prefer if anyone that wants an AccessPORT purchase one the usual way sufficiently in advance of the dyno day so that they might have it delivered in time.
RotorWheeee 07-05-2008, 08:38 AM I'd lean towards option one with Spitfire for a known commodity Dynojet.
I just realized I went to Spitfire 3 years ago with another group, would be interesting to see what my differences are.
So preference to Spitfire but I'll go to either location. $25 wont make a differance
I am contemplating purchasing a Cobb AP for my 6SP AT. Jeff if i purchase a used AP from a private person on the forum who purchased it from you, you will still tune it correct?
Thief 07-05-2008, 11:24 AM I'll come just to hang out. Unless I have a sudden change of mind... It's been a couple of years since I've seen redefinerx8 anyway :D
EDIT: I'd prefer Brampton since it's a much shorter drive :D
qtwre 07-05-2008, 02:09 PM My vote is for spitfire. Waterloo needs to move. It's in a terrible location... ;)
rx8thunder 07-06-2008, 08:43 PM Bump. Thanks to the few of you who offered an opinion about location. Nobody else have an opinion? As it stands now, Brampton will be the location. Speak now or lose your vote!
BrianGT 07-08-2008, 10:38 AM Spitfire is my vote too.
Is there an official thread coming soon?
