On the rx8strakes website there's a picture of one of the kits being used. Which one was used for the preview pic, the gunsmoke 7% or the charcoal 30% and do you have pictures of the alternative?

No problem. The overlay kits are actually a thick, stretchable vinyl that adhere and lie over the lights.

they actually take a considerable amount of time and patience to put on if you plan on doint this yourself

The previous comment about these taking a while to install is definitely a fair statement. I asked one of the guys here who installed these and he didn't time the installation, but he thinks it took him about 20-30 minutes per light.

Ok I struggled with the kit today and ended up giving up for the time being.. I started a little late b/c it was so hot but I ran out of light. I have a question about the tabs.. where exactly are those supposed to go.. it just seems like the kit itself doesn't fit around the entire tail light. The instructions say the film is very giving as far as peeling and unpeeling to get a good fit, but I hate the feeling of taking it off so many times just to get it right.. and I still didn't get it to fit the way I wanted it to!! Any advice?

Otherwise everything else that came in so far looks great hahah

I ordered a set of these a while back and also had issues getting them installed. Eventually I gave up. It seemed to me there where two problems. One is there should be more tabs on the overlays to help with positioning and pulling the vinyl during installation. With only four of them, I ended up with a couple fingerprints on the adhesive which would've shown had I left it on. Second, the material itself seemed to be slightly too small for the rear light. I understand it's vinyl and I was heating it slowly with a hairdryer to stretch it. But that combined with my first point made me wave the white flag after about an hour of struggling with it.

Hope you have better luck. BTW, if anyone needs a spare passenger side overlay (gunsmoke) I've got one :)

that was exactly my problem. i'm going to retry again today, but i might have ruined one of the tail lights already :banghead:

Although you can do overlays on your own, I usually tell people to take their kits to a tint shop. If you're not familiar with heating and stretching vinyl it can quickly become a nightmare.

A case of beer is usually enough for the 30 mins it would take a shop to put them on for you.

How much does that stuff cost?

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems installing the overlays. From the sound of it, the taillights can be tricky. Our guy who installed them seemed to be able to do it without too much difficulty, but he has apparently done this a number of times before. We have also heard from a few customers that they have had them professionally installed, and they've come out looking great. I'm sorry we can't be of more help.

Would constantly washing the car that these are applied to affect how long they last or would it be fine?

they'll be fine as long as you let them dry before you go washing it. The adhesive should not separate after that unless you have openings allowing water to continuously sit in.

I am not impressed with the overlays. Getting all of the bubbles out is almost impossible. I have also heard that they are illegal in Wa. I wish that would have been mentioned on the site!???

just go buy the tint spray and tint it out i say. a lot simpler for me.

Sorry to hear that you're unhappy. The overlays are a quality product made by Lamin-x. We have heard that they can be tough to install and some customers have had them installed professionally.
