Yes, I might buy a 3rd gen RX7 to play with but I was considering buying a new RX8 or the possible RX7 if it ever comes out as my daily driver. However with my previous RX8 (2004), I had your typical flood. It's 2008, cars shouldn't flood, this is a design flaw. I wrote Mazda NA and requested that they consider investigating my report and I enclosed a receipt. I had to have my vehicle towed literally 500 ft up a hill to the dealer. I spent $870 on parts and labor, the dealer took me for a ride and so did Mazda. Anyways Mazda NA, told me that it was a "driver error" and declined my request. I will never buy a new Mazda vehicle as long as I live.


I had a Nissan a few years ago and the master clutch cylinder went out @ 51K miles. I wrote them and they reimbursed me for the repair. I will heavily consider buying a Nissan as my next daily driver, they wanted to uphold the quality of their company. Mazda basically told me that the RX8 was unique and being unique they don't consider it to be of the same Mazda quality. Whatever, they lost on some opportunity with me. Thought I'd share my story because until now, I liked Mazda.

 

You sound bitter. Was this flood you're only problem? Pretty small deal, and it happens to a lot of people. If you were still in warranty, it would be taken care of. However, if you are out of warranty, you pay for it. That's how a warranty works. I don't understand what your problem with Mazda is.

No, I had a few other minor issues. They told me the warranty doesn't cover flooding. See I don't mind things happening with a 15 year old RX7, but when you have a pretty new car, that is inexcusable.

 

Point is the RX8 was my daily driver, I need my daily driver to be reliable. I ended up going to a 99 Honda Prelude and it's a tank, I've spent nothing but oil changes on it. The RX8 did have quite a few minor issues, in any other car, any owner would be pissed, but owning several RX7s prior to the RX8, I wasn't expecting a Honda. It just pisses me off that an American piece of crap is probably 100x more reliable. I really enjoyed the RX8 for it's handling and it had a set of nice features and touches, but quality wasn't Mazda's #1 concern, and neither was performance for that matter.

 

Warranty doesn't cover flooding? That doesn't sound right at all. You sure you're telling us the whole story?

Also, Arlington, VA? You didn't take it to Rosenthal Mazda, did you? They're a forum vendor and very good from what I hear. Strange they would give you a problem. Very strange.

Way to contradict yourself in your very first sentence.
Rotary engines are prone to flooding. This is well known. It's a result of a lack of pistons. Flooding is also avoidable, and the processes to avoid this are well documented

You wrote an angry letter to mazda and demanded they give you stuff for free, because you flooded your engine by not following well documented procedures.

You have no friends, and can't use manpower or a friends truck to tow your car 500 feet up a slight grade, or better yet just push start the damn thing.

You didn't have enough friends to push start or de-flood the car yourself, and you didn't have the brains to find a good dealership who wouldn't **** you, before you had problems.

Mazda told you what you already knew, that you failed to follow the well documented procedures to prevent flooding, and denied your claim. Since mazda didn't get down on it's knees and pleasure you, you're never going to get another one. Except for maybe an old 7, because the twin turbo on a 3rd gen is incredibly reliable and cheap to maintain.

You had a non wear item fail 1000 miles out of warranty and someone took pity on you.

You read the form letter they sent you with your reimbursement check and teared up a bit.

Mazda told you that the design of the rotary engine makes it prone to flooding if you're an idiot and cannot follow some simple instructions.

Haha the Porsche has been pretty cheap so far, engine was under warranty and they are pretty easy to work on. The engine had a defect and Porsche paid for it.

The Mazda bumper to bumper warranty was up but the powertrain was still good. The car had something like 43K miles on it. The bad thing was I always let the car warm up. It happened when it was really cold out.

Yes I took it to Rosenthal, and I forget the gentleman's name but the guy on here who sells parts is a really nice guy and he gave me a discount quite a few times on parts. However the guy who was my service adviser took me to the bank. He knew I was in a bind and needed my car working. They were quick with it but charged me out the a$$.

 

This doesn't make sense to me. You owned multiple RX-7s, yet didn't know this might be a problem? And further didn't know how to avoid it, or for that matter fix it yourself? RX-7s were much worse, in my ownership experience - both FC and FD, than the RX-8.

Anyways for those who are in a lovefest don't worry about it, I was just disappointed that Mazda doesn't care enough about their quality that they basically told me sorry, you should have bought something else.

I guess it doesn't matter, I know they will fail on the next RX7, guess I will stick to pistons even though I love the rotary design. At least other companies are willing to pay to keep some loyal to their brand. I actually recommended Nissan to a few people and they ended up buying the cars (sedans), point is, I can't recommend Mazda unless it's someone wanting to gut the thing and use it at the track.
