UPDATE ON PAGE 4

first off, i do not know how much longer it is going to take me as i still have alot of parts to get

i'll post a bunch of pics and when i have more info on what all needs to be done and a full list of all the parts required for swap i'll post them, but for now these are all the details i have

here it is stock, right before i put on my new wheels and tires

here are some pics of the engine bay fabrication work i did
i did make a couple cuts, and of coarse i removed beam that connects the frames in the middle of the engine bay

ABS relocated (had to extend harness about 6 feet) (this is not required, the 05 model has a smaller ABS module, but this does make it look alot nicer.

I finaly got the car to my work a few days ago and sat the motor in today
I will not have to cut the firewall, unless i want to to sit the motor alot further back. as of now until i get the tranny, as far as i can tell from measurments i have aquired online i will have to lengthen the shifter to go into the stock location
I may also use aftermarket electric fans, as the stock ones come very close to the crank pully.

here are some pics of the motor sitting in the engine bay
http://carpron.com/multisite/d/224933-2/P1017131.JPG
http://carpron.com/multisite/d/224936-2/P1017132.JPG
http://carpron.com/multisite/d/224939-2/P1017133.JPG
here you can see how close it is to the radiator fans, and why i will probably go with thinner fans, possibly even pushers
http://carpron.com/multisite/d/224942-2/P1017134.JPG

http://carpron.com/multisite/d/224948-2/P1017142.JPG
i have about a 1/2 an inch between the motor and firewall, i did beat it in a little before painting it, but thats it, the water line coming out of the back of the head will have to be modified slightly

more to come soon

i'm using a R154 tranny, and getting a custom driveshaft with the stock diff for now, i want to test it out anyway to see just how much power it can hold, if can get it to hold 450 to 500 i will prolly just throw in a kazz or cusco lsd, mabey even a mazdaspeed, and see how much that can hold, if it does break i will most definately go with one from another car, but i do not know what yet. i'ld like to go with a supra diff but they are really high, i might get a ford 8".
i won't be pushing more than 300-350 whp when i fist get it running because i want to show the car at nopi nationals and i need tmake sure its going to be running for the show, so i won't be able to afford it if it breaks. as soon as i'm back though, i will start upping the boost

i am still waiting on R154 tranny, flywheel, clutch, usdm MKIV supra oil pan, USDM supra water pump, injectors, adjustable FPR, Piping, Wastegate, BOV, timing belt, acc. belt, and lots of other small misc parts
and i have alot of wireing yet to do

and yes i did polish the intake manifold and valve covers myself. i am the only person to touch this car besides paint, which need redoing in alot of places and will be when the motors in.
ive done all the wireing, fab work and engine detailing.

Look'n very good. One question tho, why not go with a V-mount setup since you already have the front end torn apart like that? You could probably make more room for the radiator fans and crank pully that way too.

sixgen3sgte
06-11-2008, 09:45 AM
yeah i'm sure there will be some, i was already expecting that

i'm sure some will talk about weight balance, and how its not a rx8 without a rotary, but i'm not build it to track race, i want a good street car i can wax some cars on the highway with but something i can also slide around, and i really think i will be able to do that with this car
and i did not buy the car because of the rotary, i bought it becasue its a really great looking car, and its not as common. it also has one of the smoothest rides out there, this thing is more stable at 150mph than a Z is at 120. andi promise, with the amount i paid for the car, and the amount i will have in it, i would barely be able to afford a stock supra, and it will be just like every other stock supra, i will have a one of kind car when its done. and it should be a good bit lighter than a supra too.

as far as V-mount, there is definately no room for that without moving the motor about a foot back and getting different radiator and intercooler.
v-mounts take much more room from the front bumper to the motor

sixgen3sgte
06-11-2008, 02:30 PM
i posted this on the supra forums also, and have had alot of feedback, and jsut posted this info on there, so i am post it on here too

thanks for all the comments guys

and yeah it will def be at nopi
i want it done by July 18 for a drift (practice only) event in atlanta that i really want to attend but IF it is done, it probably won't be drift worthy yet

I have the RX8's harness finished other than the EPS, and gauges
and i have done some 2J harness's before it just need several positive sources and several grounds. i'll be mounting the ecu under the dash in, i just have to find the pinouts again

i just ordered the USDM MKIV oil pan, water pump and a bunch of gaskets and stuff today, they will take it out of my check for the next several weeks, but it will be here tomorrow

i also hopefully have a buyer for a 3sgte motor i have and that will pay for the tranny i'm buying from some one on the Supra forums, a wastegate (going with the HKS standard, so if you know someone with one let me know), clutch and flywheel

i still have to figure what i am going to do about the drive shaft, but can't do anything till the tranny is here.

i will make the mounts this week and next. looks like i'll be doing solid mounts, at least for now, and see how well i can tune the idle. i just don't think i have the time to fab, good urethane mounts and have time to test them. plus there is not much room between the cross member and oil pan or plug cover and hood, only about 3/4 of an inch total, mabey more but i won't know till the new oil pan arrives
i've got the charge pipes already, just may have to get some new boots if i want it to look good

i'll be dropping off my throttle body, intercooler, and some other small aluminum parts off at a local welders that i have been using for aluminum parts for years
that should be ready early next week and then it will take me a few days to polish all of it

I also have to fab the down pipe and exhaust, i'll prolly just get a vband and use 3" steel pipe, i don't know if i'll be able to get mandrel yet, but thats something simple enouth to change later, and it will have wrap so you won't be able to see it
i want to get a supra down pipe and see if it fits, it looks like there is room, and at worst it would have to be slightly modified but i prolly won't have the extra money by then.
i also have to figure out what i want to get for tuning. i have a AFC neo worst case
but i want the AEM fuel/ignition controller

but anyways thanks again for the support guys

Check into Haltech for ECU options also. They have some good products. My boss who just tuned a G35 with one liked it quite a bit & is doing another one for a 350Z.

Nice car & good luck

Wow, IT DOES FIT....
I love 2Jz. It is really tough engine.
May be we can see 600+HP RX-8 for street, or 1000+HP for racing.

Goodluck!

It looks really good, I hope it turns out well.

In all honesty though, I hope it goes terribly and there are tons of electrical and fitment issues and it just doesn't work.
You'll feel a much greater sensation of self-actualization by figuring out the rotary :)

What do you plan on doing for the EPS and ABS?

sixgen3sgte
07-08-2008, 01:48 PM
lol ^

i'll post info on the electrical issues as soon asi have them worked out, i haven't even really started on alot of things

i've been really busy at work, and have not been able to stay late like i would like to, i did tget the motor mounts made, and have started on the steering, i still have alot of work though, again i'm looking to get finished by september, im also taking the car back home this week, cuz i'm done with the lift for a while, just have some welding to finish up and the steering can be done with jack stands

well in fl you can do pretty much anything you want to with your car. the only thing you have to worry about doing is making it know to somone if you try to sell it.as far as cost dont plan on it being cheap but it will probably be alot cheaper all the way around compared to a 20b

i've read 100 posts saying that this swap is the devil that you take the soul of the rx8 and you fwk up the weight balance and that all 2jz are crap and you cant get more than 400 rwhp out of it and even if you have a monster 2jz u cant run 9's ... but imho this is the best thing that rx8 can get ... first of all i have a rx8 and the first day i bought it i was with a friend that has a Opel Astra Cabrio Bertone 2.0 turbo (stock 200bhp) modded to ~280 bhp and 380 nm torque (not proven on dyno) and on the way back home we raced from 50 from 60 from 100 and from a stand still (KPH) he owned me with ease pulling ahead like i was standing still even from a stand still i could only get a car ahead of him for a short period of time i wanted to at least hang with him since a VW passat 2.0 DIZEL AUTO tuned could hang with him until 140 kph. That OPEL is allmost the same as the 1.7 astra ... same gearbox same FWD same backbone only the engine is changed and if a astra with a 2 liter small turbo 20 psi could kill a rx8 that easy then i want a better engine in mine and no mods could give me the confidence of reliability i feel that if slap a bolt on turbo on it it wont beat the astra and it will break down more offen so the only real option of modding a rx8 is a complete engine swap ... any1 who tells you otherwise is just ignorant. and those who flame about lag and stuff can try to go from 50 in second gear against a turbo astra in second gear and see what happens u have no power for a lot of time and the astra is already breaking in front of you

07-21-2008, 09:42 AM
Dude i really dont get your post , use some damn commas or something ffs. If you're flaming the 2jz then you are a retard , thats one of the best engines imo , cant run 9's with it? Wtf are you talking about , those engines can produce more whp then you can ever possibly need , like 1500+? And dude , im not trying to bag on you or nothing but if you bought the rx8 for a drag car then you got yourself the wrong car. Yeah there is lag but theres also things like anti lag , brake boosting etc. 2jz rx8 would completely dominate a fucking astra or any crap ass VW. But yeah best way to get power out of this car is to do an engine swap sadly , its not getting rid of the soul imo you are just replacing it with a stronger heart so to speak :). Not everyone buys the rx8 because they are in love with the rotary , they might simply like the pricing , looks , and handling characteristics. Im buying a supra soon and then going bpu for awhile , unless this swap gets completed and shows good results...i might do it also after i move from shitty california.

Irony?
Maybe English is your second language? If so, the definition of ignorant is not knowing. As in, you are ignorant of the rotary engine, and quit street racing dumb shit.

Turbo rotaries have plenty of low-end.

i've.. i am stupid ... front of you

do not disrespect the astra, there is a reason why they are liked, very very light weight.

now, do not disrespect the rotary, rotary engine sacrifice torque for power per displacement/engine room. there is a reason why for the same room this guy is doing, he can shove 3, 4 rotor in the car and get crazy hps... un boosted...

finally, and no flame please, whats the same between a 800,900,and 1000 hp supra?. ... they all run 10 seconds.

^^ Atleast you look cool when you hit the wall on the 1/4 mile run. rofl. Yeah and i heard they crush cars EVEN if you have reciepts for the purchase. California really hates "illegal" modifications and they show it by unconstitutional aggression. I say we all start a riot , in the midst of chaos i will search for a 3 rotor in a shop to loot :). Of course this is for the common good.

ciobulus
07-22-2008, 10:06 AM
supra runs 8 with a 6 gear manual tranny and yes english is my second language and. Theres nothing between a 800 900 1000 rwhp supra coz u are on the edge of grip at 700 hp so with 800 bhp 900 1000 u need drag slicks suspension line locks and other mods for the quarter mile ... The reason behind the 1000 bhp 10 second run is that they are daily driven and all around tuned not focused on drag racing. And what the fuck is wrong with 10 seconds ? veyorn cant hit 10 seconds on the drag strip. i like the engine its a cool engine but i hate the fact that it breaks down a lot, yesterday i went to buy some oil from the mazda dealership and the guys there started telling me to reserve a engine from austria coz mine at 33k Km will fail soon :) so what the fuck pay 5 thousand euros for a new rotor and housing or just swap it with a 2jz NO BRAINER

Edit : i get the guys that flame openminded ppl like me .. when i was 16 i would punch someone in the face if they sayd that theres a engine that is better engineered and better built than my 1.3 L 80 kw lancia engine :)) and my friend with the astra which i like a lot (someone assumed i hate astra) argued with me day and night about dizel engines being the best engines in the world. You will get it soon and swap rolls royce turbine helicopter engines in your mazdas if it puts a smile on your faces.

raise your hand if you heard about a small car called Shelby Cobra . Guess what that car is a AC ACE roadster with a V8 swap form a inline 6.

So maybe if i do this swap i'l run it against a stock rx8 on the track to see which is more fun to drive and own since i hear that most of the rx8 owners spent more than 40 grand on they'r cars to run 360 bhp and they still break down every now and then.

yes 40g with the car .. but think about this ... i live in europe so .. il give you an example from where i stand, I can buy from germany an rx8 with lots of miles coz only the engine wears out (the roads there are perfect) i can buy it for 10k euros with a working engine and all the options i can just drive it around (not like a mad man) till it breaks and it will and then drop 10k more in it and swap it to a good 2jz engine (no mods) so 300 bhp at first few minor tweaks and tunes and ur in the 400 range for the price of a used good condition RX8 and u have the "reliable as the sun" toyota engine ... install a 2step and scare ppl shitless. As a every day car you cant drive the rotary engine like its meant to be driven, you need to rev it and keep momentum to get any kind of speed and fun but when ur in the city or outside the city there no fun to be had coz u will stop and break a lot so if u had a monster 2jz u'l be more than happy to stop and break coz you can spool that mofo back up and get pushed back in the seat.

To each their own... I personally dont like shift tronic/auto trannies because i feel less involved when driving. Thats just me though , id rather have a 6 or 5 speed gearbox with a short shifter on it :). When i get a little older ill think about auto trannies lol :). Or when traffic gets really bad :(

ciobulus
07-28-2008, 08:43 PM
everything is good its just a matter of perspective .. some like to grab the shift knob and ram it in gears like a bad ass mother fucker and some like to watch the revs go up and down while the car is moving in a smooth and amazing way. i like teh stick coz its another way to control the car from your body No wonder bikers have so much fun and love to just ride anywhere any pretext any day any time ... they just love it because they control every movement of that bike with the body and the mind ... not the mind of a german who made a new drive between the lines autopilot and 10 ms auto manual shiftmegatropix and the new just enter the car stfu and watch some commercials while i get you where u want to be. u dont see ppl getting the auto girlfriend fucker coz they want to do it themself's . Thats just my opinion and some ppl like both .. If u like both then ask the guy sitting next to you in the car to shit for you, i allways do that with my friends and we are used to it like even drag racing from stop signs while eating :))

Just a reminder guys or to clarify... Its not a regular automatic transmission, It wont shift up or down unless you actually either move the stick or press the paddle. There is no drive gear for old people. So trust me its as much fun as a manual but you wont miss any shifts.

07-30-2008, 07:34 PM
Wow theres an rx8 thats up and running with a 2jz? Never seen it before. Wonder how much that swap costed him? I might consider doing a 2jz swap , love the sound of the inline 6. It also depends on the price though. Of course this thread is off topic , its pretty much dead. Wheres the updates on the swap?. Yeah.. Wow an auto tranny that doesnt shift until you tell it to. Sounds very interesting. How much did it cost to swap it in? Did it bolt right on to the 20b? Or did it require some custom fabrication? Interesting :)

Lol , when your car is done be sure to take ALOT of pics and videos. Ill be your number 1 fanboy >_>. Oh and you have to let me drive it , thats the common rule for being a rx8club member. Yep read the rules. Section 24-A states when doing a Sr20 swap into the rx8 , you must give all rx8 members an equal and unbiased opportunity on test driving the vehicle per user satisfaction :). Damn look at me , im like a "forums Law" encyclopedia. They should make me an admin. Oh yeah and unbiased opportunity means giving even tajabaho a chance lol.

That sucks. And no I haven't done any eps wireing all of the stock wires will be going to it I do not know how it works wether from trans speed or wheel speed sensors so I will see if it works and if not I will go from there. Alot of mine will not be done for the show. Such as gauges, ac, the sway bar etc... I will just have done what's required to move the car petty much. It's posible I will have to push it in. I'm guesing a month or two before it's at full speed making the power I want

yeah handelng hasn't exacty been tested yet lol

i got my fuel system worked out i think ill prolly get some picks of that up soon with some other i took while i have been wireing

i extended the 2jz harness several feet and was going to move it to the other side of the dash but decided to mount it under the driver seat for easier access

still working on getting it wired up correctly i am having trouble getting the ignition power

but luckily i have sold a few things lately so i have some extra cash.

first thing i am going to do is set up a phone apointment with DR Tweak of Phoenix Tuning for him to walk me through which wires actuall need power and ground on the harness
hopefully i will be able the crank the car after that we have discussed and he feels confident it won't be very difficult

also monday my driveshaft will get dropped off to be shortened and balanced
I got a drivesahft from my work that i think is off of a 4-runner, but it slides into my transmission perfectly and i have done some work to the diff end to get it to bolt up to the rx8 diff and be centered, it only needs to be shortened by about 3 inches, but i will be getting a custom aluminum driveshaft made from driftmotion later on.

i will try my best to get some pics up this weekend though

thanks to everyone who has been keeping up with this project.
