REsuperD 06-10-2008, 11:33 AM i've always entertained the idea of me working as a part-time car salesman 'cuz i like cars so much and i've met so many car salespeople who don't know jack about cars and can't ever tell me anything useful i didn't know. last nite i watched that episode of curb your enthusiasm where larry david got a job selling cars, so... anyone here sell cars for a living? or anyone ever worked part-time selling cars? can i do it?
SideOfBacon 06-10-2008, 11:36 AM theres a few salesmen on this board. I couldnt do it, I am too honest of an individual

lol, hillarious episode...
I thought about this to way back when for the same reasons but concluded I don't have the patience of the persistence to try to convince/coerce someone who gives you a no or threatens to walk.
rglbegl 06-10-2008, 12:03 PM There is no such thing as a "part time salesman"
Most dealerships will work you morning or evening shift, rotating daily with every other weekend off. Expect to put in about 60 hours per week.
Rhawb 06-10-2008, 12:09 PM I think the reason so many salespeople don't know anything about cars would be due to the huge turnover rate in that industry. Basically, if you fall on a hard month, most dealerships will just drop you, so even good salesmen get thrown out with little regard. Really, there's no big incentive to learn your product since you're probably going to get fired anyway.
Sure, if you happen to find a good dealership, you may have great job security and a great experience, but overall it's a very difficult industry to make a living in.
rglbegl 06-10-2008, 12:12 PM Where in Socal are you?
If you are looking for a dealership job I could probably help. I have been in the car biz my whole life here in Socal.
playdoh43 06-10-2008, 12:37 PM ive dealt with a lot of honest car sales people before, usually when I goto BMW my experience has been very good as opposed to Mazda and Mitsubishi where they tried hard to swindle me. Theres different culture at different companies.

I think that's because BMW, Mercedes, and other luxury brands are more concerned with repeat customers and keeping the whole experience pleasant. Mid/low end dealerships are likely more concerned with just plain volume of sales. I remember a fantastic Mazda salesman who got fired after a few months on the job, only to end up at the local Mercedes dealership for years (he may even still be there).

my dealer spent 10 years as a porsche dealer came to mazda for 3 months and was great, he was let go and now he's at the audi dealership across the street. Fine car dealerships are different.
SideOfBacon 06-10-2008, 01:05 PM this is the whole reason I do private seller with inspection by my car salesmen (good friend since HS), a carfax report, and an extended warranty purchase.
hasnt failed me yet, and best bang for the buck since no commission or cost of running dealership are rolled into price. its a win-win since seller gets more than trade-in value, and you get cheaper than dealership price. of course this only works with previously owned vehicles, but I also never buy brand new.

i'm in LA. would you have connections w/ any mazda dealers? :mdrmed:
Used to be in the industry. Went from sales to finance. I hated it.
Frankly, even if you like cars, you're not going to enjoy the job if you don't care for sales. It takes a lot out of you. But if you enjoy sales, then go for it. :)

What a joke, tha tmajority of lying in a dealership occurrs from the customers mouth...
IT's nto a part time job. It doesn't work that way. If you are not there 50 hours you will not succeed, it's as simple as that.
It's also not a job for car-guys, thats what techs are for. Salesman are people-persons. Becoem a salesman if youa re hungry for money, willing to work for it, willing to accept rejectiona dn not take it personally, and like tlaking to people. The number one job of a salesperson is to make a freind in under an hour, not be able to explain the intricacies of a car.
