I understand the manual advises topping off the oil with the engine warm, and letting it sit for five minutes so the oil drains back into the pan.

But ... why must it be warm? I'd rather top it off in my garage without burning my hands around the dip stick, e.g., first thing in the morning when I'm about to drive it.

The engine doesn't have to be warm when adding oil, but should be warm before checking oil. (oil level may show a bit higher when engine is warm)

It might be a good idea to add oil when engine is warm a couple times when needed (and yes, getting a reading after oil has a few minutes to drain down) to get an idea how much is needed to bring it up to the "full" mark.
