Hi, I really like the RX-8 and would really consider purchasing one if it was strictly a 2 door and not have the suicide doors. Does Mazda have any plans to come out with a 2 door RX-8? Is anybody else interested in a 2 door RX-8? I think a 2 door RX-8 would make the car look much better.

then it would just be your regular coupe, what's the fun in that?

It then would be called an RX-7. Wait until 2005 (Generation 4 to debut) Hopefully.

Those suicide doors wont stay unique for too long. Just like all the copy-cat MX-5's out there.

Toyota-MR2....Honda-S2000...BMW-Z3/4...MG-F... to name a few

Isn't it true that several manufacturers are about to copy Mazda again & release models with thier own suicide design for 2004........???

Mercedes for example.

Yes, before we knew it, the market is gonna swam with suicide doors, but still, it's nice to lead rather than follow. Mazda have, yet, done it again.

Uh, no, that was Saturn (http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/overview.aspx?modelid=3259&src=vip). Mazda's one of the followers.

I've never understood the "2door=sporty, 4door=stodgy" thing. It's sporty because it's hard to get into the back seat???

The insurance thing makes even less sense to me.

In one of their latest press releases, Mazda stated that it was very interested in creating a convertible 8, and a 2-door 8. You can find the entire release in the media forum.

Saturn only had a third door on the driver's side.

family and future considerations will now eternally prevent me from ever owning a 2 dr or 2 seater so the RX8 is the closest I can get without engendering the wrath of the g/f... you can call it cheating if you want but hey, she never really mentioned it HAD to have 2 FULL rear doors or a bench back seat...

"Hi honey! I got that new 4dr 4 seater family car!" :D

UPDATE: In the December issue of MotorTrend magazine it states that Mazda has shelved the idea of a new RX-7. According to the article, it will not be produced. :(

The new 7 would surely cost more and face tough competition. If I were Mazda I would put my focus on selling 8's and increasing the performance of future 8's via Mazdaspeed. Maybe offer a turbocharged version of the 8??

You could always use the rear of the rx8 by creating a second fuel tank for extra long drives .ha ha ha

you may want to wait for the miata coupe. it went on sale in japan this year (http://www.mazda.co.jp/customize/roadstercoupe/) and might be available here in the near future. maybe a couple years down the line they'll combine the miata coupe with the miata turbo convertible (http://www.roadster.mazda.co.jp/limited/turbo/) to create the turbo coupe.

well as for the freestyle doors i think few pick ups had em before the rx-8 and of course the Saturn. But its a lot sharper on the 8. at least i think so.

as for a 2dr version. Blah. that would ruin this car. As for the convertible.. id be interested in seeing that.

I love the suicide doors, it gives the car a whole different look; its sporty as hell, and it has the comfort of not having to move the front seats to have people sit in the back.

Oh there'll be a convertable, all right. Probably not from Mazda, though. No, I'll bet somewhere in East LA, somebody's welding closed the freestyle doors and getting ready to chop off the top.

Why would Mazda produce a substantially modified version of the RX8 when they already manufacture the world's best selling roadster?

Hard for me to imagine that Miata sales eclipsed 20 years of the Alfa Spider...but then again, the Miata is loving -- and more reliable -- homage to the great Italian & English roadsters. First thing I noticed about the Miata were its suspicious door handles...

Probably wise, although regrettable from our point of view. There are an awful lot of two seaters out there competing for the same dollar. The 8 was meant to have broader appeal. I know if it had two seats, I couldn't even dream of owning one. I gotta have a back seat, period.
