He is in a kill shelter and I really want him. He has a great smile and I can tell from his eyes that he is pleading to be saved.

Do it and the first couple months of his food is on me.

Rescued pets IMO are more appreciative, they can tell you have given them a better life than the one they have in the shelter, they are more loving.

:)

Does the shelter allow a "meet & greet" with your other pets to make sure there is compatability?

I'm surprised that a no-kill shelter hasn't rescued him.

I volunteer at the Animal Defense League here in San Antonio, and this guy is a good example of one they will take from the kill shelter, because he looks so adoptable.

Unfortunately, the "mangy mutt" types are allowed to stay at the kill shelter, but fortunately the more adoptable ones like this guy find homes quick.

Judging from the photos of other dogs at Hillsborough, the photographer is BRUTAL :lol2: So if this dog looks this good, despite the photographer, then he must be a real looker in person.

Unfortunately, that shelter is horrific. I have tried to donate items there in the past, and the people that work there are less than humane. They don't even encourage interaction with the animals left behind, which makes it that much harder for the hope of adoption.

Now that you mention it, I can see that.

I mean.............in some cases it looks like they don't even attempt to get an appealing picture of their dogs, which might help adoption.

I know our local affiliate or "sister station" would jump on a story about something like a bad animal shelter. Maybe send them an email and ask them to investigate.

And his ID is A1049886.

I hate this particular shelter. I just don't get the feeling that they even have the animals best interests at heart, or truly try to adopt them out. I went to the one in Clearwater, and it was completely the opposite. Every year they sell really great Christmas trees and pictures your pet can have taken with Santa to help raise money for the shelter. They also encourage people looking at the animals when they come, and each one has a sad little story on the cage of how it got there. You can tell the people volunteering at that shelter really try hard to find them good homes and love what they do. This one, however, has always put a bad taste in my mouth.

I have done work with assisting local shelters in improving there conditions and adoption rates. I will put in a phone call and see if we can get someone down there to have a look and offer help.... They are listed on petfinder but these people should be contacting breed specific rescues for all those pure breds. I would say even the ones like the sharpei/pit (my heart is melting over) would have a chance at the sharpei rescue.
In the meantime Im going to put an add on craigslist to give the community a little nudge and Im going to contact some bred rescues to notifiy them of the dogs there.... I was supposed to be working on my car today!! LOL, oh well.

There is a full blooded Wimeraner there, a few Dachshunds, Siberian Huskies, Aussies, Pits, Im just going to go through the pages and contact rescues relevant to each breed... This is why I bitch about breeders!! Because there is always a full blooded dog in a shelter that needs a home.. So someone there is looking for a Dachshund, they call a breeder, in the meantime those Dachshunds at the shelter die...

I was bored yesterday and was looking through the site trying to find a dog to rescue. Yesterday, my computer was working fine. I saved a bunch of pics to reference onto my computer, so that's how I got the pictures. theres a couple there that i would love to get. work sends me out of town so, not sure i can do anything yet :(

my last three dogs:

Abigale - black lab - my love. got her at 4 weeks old, she couldnt get down the steps at the house and wouldnt go pee. so i pee'd a bit she sniffed and then she went (she had to go bad but for some reason (new house maybe) wouldnt). after a week the grass would grow pretty big and when she ran she would trip over it.
my ex lost her two days before xmas of 06

Shelby - yellow lab - really good dog, allways dug to play with the neighbors dog. moved to florida and couldnt keep her so gave to my ex brother in law in kentucky. alot of open space for her to run, and he takes good care of her.

Jenna - blue tick coon - great dog, but she needed to be outside and i lived in an apartment. she went to a lady up in kentucky with a fenced yard. hear she is doing great :)

I rescued a dog about 2 years ago, She looked so cute and innocent until we brought her home. She turned out to be hyper and liked to chew on everything just about. But after lots and lots of patience she grew out of the chewing up stuff but she is still very hyper but fun. Good luck on finding a puppy to rescue. They need love too.

Yeah. I think its neurological damage that causes them to do that. My best guess would be that as a pup they got destemper and pulled through with this lasting side effect. Its pretty funny and cute.

DOH!

I went to the Animal Defense league here in SA and walked this little guy named Dale today.
He got a good brushing and got some time out of the cage.
This is a good shelter..........there are hundreds of volunteers associated with the ADL, walking or socializing with the cats and dogs, or fostering animals waiting for adoption, and unlike the facility Jenn describes, the staff at ADL genuinely care that the animals are cared for well.

Dale is as sweet as can be. Anyone want him?
Dale has heartworms, but is currently under treatment. If adopted, all heartworm treatments and veterinary care are taken care of by ADL. Adoption fees are reasonable.

^^ Oh trust me, I WANT to, but I thought more realistically about it. Reality: I am away a MINIMUM of 12 hrs a day, so it would be rather selfish right now to get a dog until I QUIT this fucked up job. (I have a 2 hr commute each day, so it's not like I could even come home and let him out.) As much as I want to rescue another one, my reality is that I have to find a way out of this job and find one where I can actually have a life again before I take on a dog that I am never home to spend time with. =(

gotta ask yourself though. is freedom away from an owner outside a holding cell for 12 hours a day better than being euthanized? :dunno:

Trust me, I know. I keep wrestling with the idea. If I could, I would save them all. Ideally, I would like to find a M-F job close to home and do some volunteer work on my spare time... perhaps become a "foster home" until dogs get placed. I have a huge heart when it comes to dogs... always have. I'm now 450.00 shy of completely paying off a 4K credit card debt trying to save my last dog last summer. Just need to make some immediate changes in my own life first before taking on things for myself. Make sense?

^ I know exactly how you feel. I lost my 18 year old Lab January and then the end of March I spent $6,000 trying to save my 15 year old mix. They were both rescues that I have had for almost 15 years. My sister just gave me a dog a month ago (trying to make me feel better), an American Bulldog that was from a rescue.

There is no need to spend all that money on dogs from breeders when you can get a great dog from a shelter or rescue. Mandy and Xuxa were about perfect dogs and Boscoe is just awesome also.

I am very sorry about your last dog. You never stop missing them. My sister's theory is that you just have to put all that love into another dog.

RX8Jenn
06-02-2008, 01:04 PM
^^ I wasn't ready to until now. Not easy for people to understand, but everyone goes through a grieving process differently. I personally cannot just "replace" something that has meant so much to me. It takes time. To try to force something would be unfair. I'm just finally at a place where I truly want to open up my heart again, it just sucks because I have a job that is a total waste of my existance and consumes way too much of my time.

know where you come from on that. every animal/pet I have ever adopted/taken in was always from pounds/lastchance/kill shelters. And I hate leaving every time with only having the ability to save 1. I want to save them all as well :( I am passionate about cats/dogs. hence my signature.

I already contacted them after reading your answer to my post. It made me think. I know I might not have much of a life to offer something else if I don't have one of my own, but it's better than the alternative. I was willing to do it anyway, despite my feelings of it being unfair to a dog after thinking about what you said. They "no longer have any record of him." I'm seriously depressed now. Hopefully some other family adopted him.

It is obvious you are a sensitive and caring person. Who knows..........maybe "Rotor" really wasn't the right rescue for you. I tend to think things happen for a reason and maybe when the next rescue dog comes along it will be the one meant for you.

Check your PM's. :)
