View Full Version : LED bulb installed
mikeb 11-15-2003, 03:18 AM after buying 7440 led from autoilumation and returning them
I bought 7443 Led from EZ Chrome light which is a ebay store that jdaled showed me.
RX-Nut 11-15-2003, 04:36 AM Hmm.. is there a big difference with this light?
RX-MEN-8 11-15-2003, 07:54 AM To Mikeb : I have just added the red floor lights to the 8. I now need to change the white bulbs on both sides of the door.(When you open the door) The bright white light overpowers the red footwell red glow. Do you know where I can get the red bulbs to get a better effect at night? Or do I need to change the clear plastic fixture to a red one if available? Thanks for your help.
mikeb 11-15-2003, 11:47 AM I have red foot lights too.
To change the lights in the door go buy 194 size bulbs
PHA RX-8 11-15-2003, 12:30 PM Question? How are your footlights wired? Meaning, do they only come on when the doors are open or do they come on when you turn on your lights?
mikeb 11-15-2003, 04:08 PM my foot lights are two ten inch audiobahn red lights placed under driver and passenger seat. I had a switch installed by a stereo shop right next to dsc switch so I control when they go on and off
RX-MEN-8 11-15-2003, 04:32 PM Mikeb: Thanks for the info.. I visited a custom store called light bulbs unlimited, but they only had them in Blue. I don't want to mix and match.. Do you have the name of a store that carries these accesories.?
Tamas 11-15-2003, 04:39 PM Mike, how do these LED lights work for you? Do they actually emit some light to the side so that the reflector behind the bulbs has any effect?
mikeb 11-15-2003, 04:44 PM I only have the led in the front turn signal and I put it in last night so I havent driven with it yet but its real bright.
I got it from www.stores.ebay.com/id=52184718

hey, our orders must have crossed from autolumination. I ordered several lights from there. What I found out was that the leads (the metal contacts) were reversed from my lights and they didn't work. When I bent them to match, they worked. Just an FYI.
How are the new lights?
mikeb 11-15-2003, 08:40 PM these one's cost 15.99
the auto ilumation wire snapped when I tried to flip the wires

Although I'm sure replacing the bulbs is the cheapest route, I have the red/black interior and am thinking red lenses would look the best. Anybody have any ideas. I don't think coloring with a red marker will work well.
mikeb 11-16-2003, 02:02 AM you could have a tint shop tint them red
RX8FanMan 11-16-2003, 02:36 PM there is red tint?

VelocityRedRX8 11-16-2003, 08:11 PM Hi,
I've installed the OEM red footwell lights. They only work in conjunction with normal interior door lights and dome light. They have a separate timer (which is pretty short) to fade them out. I'd like to be able to leave them on when the lights are on, frankly.
Also, on the side door lights. It's easy to paint the current white plastic covers. Just get transparent red modeling paint and paint them. Be advised - those lights are a safety feature and are best left white. If you're broken down on the highway with your door open you really want the door (and you) to be visible. Do this at your own risk! However, I agree that red would look better from an aesthetic standpoint.
PHA RX-8 11-16-2003, 08:29 PM I have asked my dealership assessorry guy about changing the lights to stay on with the lights. I will talk with him further next week about changing it over.

I agree, for safety reasons, I'm leaving the door lenses white. I've turned the front and rear dome lights to the off position and they don't wash out my OEM red footwell lignts anymore.
red_rx8_red_int 11-16-2003, 10:00 PM As an afterthought, I might paint the front half of the door lights red. White toward the road for safety and red toward the cabin for aesthetics. Just thinking out loud here.
jdaled 11-17-2003, 09:45 AM I like my red bulbs in the doors. And I think with them red, when the door is open, it sends more of a "caution" message than the white; but the white does illuminate the area better.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure I picked mine up at PepBoys.
mikeb 11-20-2003, 12:19 PM jdaled,
thanks again for suppyling that link to ez chrome store
I but chrome bulbs in front blinker and moved the led to my reverse lights and another pair of chrome bulbs that blink red to my back blinkers
jkamen 11-22-2003, 06:53 PM Pep boys - $2.99 for a pack of 2. Blue, red, green, orange, hyper white, you name it they go it.
MikeA 11-22-2003, 07:26 PM You can run them to a switch ( put you need to remember to turn them off when you get off the car)
OR
You can run them to an auxiliary wire (which is powered when the keys are turned) Then the lights will be lit all the time except for when the car keys are in our pocket!
xenomorph 05-18-2004, 11:55 AM Mike B,
Do you need the LED Load Equalizers for the turn signal LED's or do they work fine without it?

i can answer that xenomorph.
yes, u do need the load equalizers if u don't want your turn signals to flash rapidly (as if a bulb is out). as it says here (http://autolumination.com/equalizers.htm) , you'll need 4 total if u get the 6 ohm version and 2 total if u get the 3 ohm version. (i had 2 3 ohm resistors: one on the left rear and one on the right rear.) chris (owner of autolumination) used to offer cheaper, ceramic load resistors but i don't see them on his site anymore.
a word of caution to anyone considering LEDs for their turns (tamas alluded to this earlier in the thread):
the LEDs are focused and DO NOT reflect off the housing. i don't know about the amber but i had hyper white LEDs in my front and rear turns for a while and they were nearly invisible in the daylight. (they looked AMAZING at night!) i decided to go with hyperwhite stealths in the turns instead because of it for safety reasons.
just an FYI.
p.s. - i also had red LEDs in my brake lights but replaced with red incandescents (again, because the LEDs didn't reflect off the housing thus they looked awkward and weren't as bright/safe.)
mikeb 05-19-2004, 06:17 PM I am no longer using those as turn signals
I bought steath bulbs from the link on the first page
