man i took off today to go the pool at my friends place(about 2 miles away) never had any problem with the 8 besides sum flooding but i parked it there for about 2 hours then i left to go to the mall (about 10 miles away) n half way there my engine light came on. i stopped right away n checked fluids n saw that my oil was a lil low so i added sum 5w20hough that was it when i took off again my light was still on, i checked the oil compartment and it was a lil smoke but nothing crazy just like a puff of a cigarret, with nothing more that i could do i drove home with ease and i could tell that my engine was running really strange is almost like rpms were going up but not much speed was coming out, i dunno man really freakd out by this shyt so if there is sum1 who can help me id really appreciated...by the wasy my car is a 04 and it has 33,000 miles on it i do everything by the book high rev sutoffs good warm ups and i change my oil every 1,200 miles.....appreciate what you drive and i hope is a 8

Does it have a Mazdaspeed CAI? (cold air intake)

You're right in (the early part of) the zone for coil failure.
Have you changed plugs, coils and plug wires yet?

You still have warranty, right? since its only at 33,000. My car also is 04 and has 39500 miles on it. My basic warranty runs til 03/09 or 50,000 whichever comes first. So if you still have warranty, don't even bother messing with the car. Just take it to the maz service center and let them run diagnostic. That's what I would do.

Coils are about $100 for four.
Plugs are about $110 for four
Get those at finishlineperformance.com
Plug wires are around $95 from RacingBeat

You can install yourself or find a good shop

Well you can try the plugs first and spread out the spending.
First things you can do.
Check if any of the plug wires have come loose.
Pull out the plugs for inspection; take a picture of the plugs and post it here.
You can can have the plug wires tested

You'll be disconnecting the battery as the first step of working on the car.
By the time you're done the ECU will be reset.
The E-shaft sensor is another story which I don't remember

Its hard to start anywhere without knowing the code that generated the CEL. Don't worry about plugs, wires, coils or anything until you find out what caused it. The CEL could be the rear O2 sensor which is a cat issue. Take the car up to Autozone and have them pull the code and post it back here. The code will start with a P followed by a couple numbers (ex: P0301 is for cylinder #1 misfire).
But like crafted_soul said, the car is under warranty, so you could just let them deal with it.

Also, if you take it up to Autozone and get the code, you can reset the KAM (which contain the sensor profiles) by:
1) Turn the key to on (but don't start the car)
2) Depress the brake pedal rapidly ~20 times until the oil pressure gauge sweeps to halfway and back again.

This will clear the CEL and let the car relearn it's trim

Jon316G is correct and I'm over tired. Pull the code as step 1.

I'm the second owner too. I bought my 2004 used. Most car warranties are transferrable. You can just take out the kn v2 typhoon and put the OEM one back on, and then take it back to the dealer. I mean that is if you still have the OEM one. If you don't, well you can still ask them... you have nothing to lose. Asking doesn't cost you a thing. :)

I would do that first before I start spending my own money...

If you search you will find the answer.

If the CEL blinks it means your intake is dirty or your getting bad air into your engine. Look for escapes and unwanted dirt thru the entire system.

If CEL it stays on then "good luck" could me many things, go to Pepboys, Auto Zone or Western Auto so they can read the error code if you don't have a CEL module reader, these run for almost $250 or even $325 for our cars, this is the first thing you buy when your adding mods to any car, it will save you money and time. Jejjee but then I could be wrong because I'm a neewby just like you.....haahaha
