Let's collect some information about how frequently engines have been replaced. I've seen various reasons given: coolant leaks, faulty oil injectors, CEL light. Tell me how many miles you had on the car, what the dealer said, what compensation or perks you got, and how the car has performed since. If your engine is fine, let us know, too.

I had 4600 miles on the car. Haven't gotten it back from the shop, yet, so I can't compare performance before and after. I'm going to press MNAO for some perks.

you should. your efforts may not result in any perks coming to fruition but its worth a shot. i'm not familiar with your engine troubles but how did you drive the car? im not saying your driving habits resulted in the engine failure just curious.

I didn't have any engine troubles at all. I've never seen the CEL. My wife noticed what appeared to be coolant drops in our garage and so I mentioned it when I brought the car into the dealer for an accessory install.

As for how I drive it...(and I don't mind you asking) I've been on the forum since April, and I've read countless posts on engine break-in methodology. I took things slowly for the first 1000 miles and didn't break 6000rpms until nearly 2000 miles. I'm not a grandad, but I've yet to redline the car. 90% of my mileage is highway (I commute 108mi/day.)

I can't possibly imagine that I did anything to this engine that I shouldn't have. I checked the oil religiously, never overfilled, etc. BTW, I've kept records of mileage and fuel consumption for every fillup, so I'll know pretty soon if the new engine/ECU changes anything.

And as far as perks are concerned... I'm not really expecting anything. IMHO, too many people seem to feel they have a right to a troublefree life or take advantage of a corporate entity. As long as Mazda treats me with respect, I'll be glad to continue to sing the praises of this fabulous product.

We have found an American that isn't tempted to sue some one at the drop of a hate. If only there where more like you that understand "reasonable practicality".

Never fear though, Australians are quickly cathing up to the sue-for-the-sake-of-it attitude.

I hope we can get the lowdown on what is causing these engine failures very soon. I haven't had any problems of any kind, and previously, haven't anticipated any, but after hearing about others with engine failures, I'm wondering if my number will be up soon.

So, what could be the cause? Improper assembly by a specific individual? Flaws in a specific run of castings? ECU not programmed properly? Different material specs used in a certain component? Improper final prep before starting the engine for the first time? Improper care and driving technique?

And is it a very fine line, or something fairly significant, that separates the engines that die, from the ones that will go 150,000 miles troublefree?

I know these are all rhetorical questions at this point, but I hope somebody soon, is able to step up to the plate and answer them.

2200 miles, added 1/3 quart of oil about 500 miles ago, no leaks or problems
