Not expecting any power improvements, but is the K&N drop in actually at all worthwhile potentially for maybe a MPG gain and/or throttle response??

I've read a handful of threads here, but wanted to ask about just the drop in for now, and it's worth--or lack of.

Also, what are some aftermarket alternatives to the K&N? I'd rather run a "dry" filter vs. dealing with the cleaning and re-oiling of the K&N. Yup, that's lazy, I know.

And how can you scientifically prove a 1 MPG gain?? A couple days of a tail wind can get you that.

1 MPG is way, way too subjective. Changing your driving style by just a little bit can give bigger differences than that...

I got the 1 mpg "idea" from some of the other posts here. I agree that 1 mpg is all but impossible to accurately and consistently measure. So I guess the question should simply ask whether the Drop-in alone is worth $50.

I have one I only used at the track (HPDE), Maybe has 5,000 miles on it. You can have it for $30.00 shipped.

What are you running now? Back with oem? What about the ever subjective "throttle response"? I'm leaning towards not wasting my money..

Since at the track I'm over 7,000 RPM all the time I wanted the " better " flowing K&N, at least in theory. I would put in the K&N a day or two before the track weekend, take it out when I came back. MPG was never a goal. PM if you want mine, I send you a paypal address.

yea, 1mpg will be impossible to prove. Slightest change in driving can cause a greater fluctuation then that.

dont use those k&N filter sure they give you more air flow but they have also been proven to allow more dirt into your engine.. be advised!

I think you need to read up.

i got a 40 mile difference between the tank before and after i installed my filter.. random but true.

I have one in my 8 and one in my MPV. My MPV mileage tanked after installation. Bought a can of MAF cleaner and sprayed the snot out of it. NEVER had better mileage. Didn't notice much difference in the 8 except that on startup it seems to "breathe" in easier. If you want a low maintenance dry filter stay stock.

The fact that you're starting a thread instead of continuing to post in ones you've already found needs to be called out.

K&Ns get better at filtering as they age/get dirty.

When fresh new and oily they filter less dirt out than a typical paper filter.

....I prefer to let a filter do the filtering, rather than the "layer of dirt".

AND they will put a film of oil on your MAF sensor, so lose/lose.

Actually, as I stated in the first post, I have read some other info here on this subject and was only looking for a few specific answers regarding just using the drop in filter.

It's VERY time consuming reading all the way through several threads only to finish with a remaining question. Now I will admit that I've been a bit of a post whore today and lately. I suspect that most people here are/were when they just joined and/or just got an 8.

Posts don't conclude. I was simply stating that you should have tagged these questions at the end of an existing K&N thread. You would have everyone already subscribed to that thread get an email regarding the update.

i gained 1 mpg by getting rid of my spare tire!!
