View Full Version : Rough shifting 1-2 and 2-3
ho1ming 04-06-2008, 12:05 AM My 05 rx8 experiences rough shifting when going into 1st, shifting from 1st to 2rd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd, the car just jerks/shakes when I shift into these gears. This is no a big issue since that cars never grinds and it still runs smooth. But since 3rd to 4th is ultra smooth(5th and 6th is alright), so shifting into 1,2,3 just bothers me a little bit. Any bros has any suggestion of what's happening to my car and any solutions? Thx!!!
DarkBrew 04-06-2008, 05:50 AM Does the car shake at idle? Have you checked the motor mounts for cracks?
ho1ming 04-06-2008, 05:23 PM I think I have all the recalls done. But I just checked the engine mount TBS and my car is in the affected vins, I also feels the car vibrates at idle and I thought it is normal for an rotary, so my question is would a cracked engine mount cause jerky shiftings? should I also have the dealer check the transmission? Thanks all!
mysql 04-06-2008, 05:58 PM the car should be perfectly still and you should feel zero vibrations in your seat and steering wheel. The only thing that should vibrate is the shifter. If you feel vibrations, it'll be the motor mounts that need replacing.
far as jerky motions, are you slipping the clutch enough in the 1-2 upshift? If you're too abrupt it will jerk around.
chancejat 04-06-2008, 06:01 PM try rev matching a little
Jasonawojo 04-06-2008, 06:04 PM Not sure if this is what the OP is referring to, but sometimes my car jerks/shakes when I shift from 1-2 or 2-3, but it occurs as I actually move the shift lever with the clutch pushed down. Rev matching smooths out the actual letting off of the clutch.
Charles R. Hill 04-06-2008, 06:37 PM That is a definite sign of insufficient clutch disengagement. You will want to have your bracket checked-out before your synchros suffer serious damage.
ho1ming 04-06-2008, 08:03 PM It happens when when I was shifting and the clutch was all the way down, also I don't feel the jerk/shake when shifting to 4th, 5th and 6th gear, strange huh?!
Jasonawojo 04-06-2008, 09:49 PM ..synchros suffer serious damage.
Yeah, in addition 1st can be hard to get into at times, and 5th grinds at higher revs. I complained once about 5th and my clutch pedal squeaking and they replaced the neutral switch. Didn't help at all obviously, but I do have the complaints on record now at least. Once school ends I'll try to get a new bracket and/or transmission.

That sounds like the same issue I'm having
Jasonawojo 04-06-2008, 10:02 PM Did you instruct them on where to look for bracket damage?
Nope, I complained of the squeaking right before that long thread by nygcps. Definitely will when I go back though.
alnielsen 04-06-2008, 10:22 PM If anyone does find a broken bracket, they should report it on the NHTSA web site ( http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ ). If enough people report this there could be a recall initiated by the government.
I to have had a squeaking peddle, but I haven't found anything broken yet.
ho1ming 06-24-2008, 01:32 AM Done the engine mount TSB and replaced trans and diff fluid with red line, now the car shift butter smooth in every single gears, may be the temp and weather has something to do with it too? anyway, problem solved and could not be happier, thx everyone!
