So I got pulled over yesterday just because my windows were tinted. I was doing absolutely nothing else wrong. Funny, the last time I got pulled over and the cop accused me of trying to outrun him... even he did not mention anything about my windows. Anyway, the guy decided to give me a ticket for it with no prior warning ever. What are my options here?

I bought the car used about a year ago and the windows were already tinted. I just had it inspected about a week ago. Nobody ever mentioned anything to me about the tint being too dark. I guess I never really thought about it or thought anyone actually got ticketed. Does it get me off the hook at all that I didn't personally have the windows tinted? I'm not even 100% sure they didn't even come that way to begin with from the factory. It's also got a crappy Mazda decal on the back window.

Apparently NYS law limits you to 70% and when the cop measured it was ~30%. Is it even possible to plead not guilty? If I get the tint removed will the ticket be dropped? Does anyone have any idea how much the fine would be? And what consequences would there be if I just paid the fine and left the windows tinted? If I got pulled over again for it would they make me pay more or could I get in other trouble?

Can anyone recommend a good/cheap place to see how much it would be to get the tint removed? I am in the Buffalo area (this happened in the town of Lockport to be exact).

Also, I read from some other threads that you can have another police office sign off on the ticket. How does that work? If he does, would it not appear on your record if you got pulled over for having your windodws tinted again? I don't really want to have to remove the tint, but I also don't want to keep getting fined for it or be a target for getting pulled over.

just pay the 50 or so on the ticket and leave it on......its an equipment violation so it wont be on your record

Is it only $50 in NY? I'd pay the ticket if it's only $50. The last time I got a ticket for window tint, it was $250!

I was just driving normally without drawing attention to my car in any way. A Mass statie was driving in the opposite direction and spotted my car. He pulled a U-ey just to pull me over for the dark tint (20%). He was gonna write me a $500 ticket ($250/window), but he had some mercy on me and gave me a $250 ticket instead...What a dick! And I was pulled over two times prior to that for speeding, but none of the staties even said anything about the dark tint!

So I had to take the damn tint off, took a pic of the car without the illegal tint, then showed it to the court magistrate. The ticket was then dropped.

It was a real PITA. So I'm just sticking with legal tint (35%) now.

Thanks for the input. If I leave the tint on and I get pulled over for it again do they increase the fine next time?

no there a set price for it if the cop want to be a ass about it he can check the box stating "court appearance required" that what happen to me other then that you should be fine
