View Full Version : Clay Bar and Wax today....
A.Mair 03-28-2008, 11:23 PM I ujsed the clay bar and waxed it today for the first time and ill can say is wow, its really worth the time and patience if you have it. Vegas is so dusty so there was a lot of crap on my car. It took me about 2 and half hours to clay bar and then an hour and a half to wax and clean it all off. The clay bar is suprisingly small but you can feel the difference on your car so much its amazing.
The roof and the hood were the parts that seem to see the most difference.

fahrfegneugen 03-28-2008, 11:26 PM That looks incredible, I wish my paint was that nice, I will have to post some pics soon to show you why I say that.
I have used a clay bar for years, but I never have done the whole car. I usually go along the lower part of the doors and the rims sometimes. I love it because it gets the tar off in summer from the road work. What did you use to lube the clay?
Nice work.
NgoRX8 03-28-2008, 11:28 PM looks good man. i love claybarring.
05rex8 03-28-2008, 11:33 PM great pics. love your back bumper. was thinking of doing that with mine. where did you get the mesh screens in the back?

you should do it, just put some music on and start the work, i used meguiars clay bar kit, it comes with the lubricant and 2 bars. and some wax for after, oh and the micro fiber towel too for wiping off the residue. It came out real nice, theres a real part of satisfaction when you finish
05rex8 i got them from customcargrilles.com, thanks :)

HCTR154 03-29-2008, 09:14 AM Clay bar works wonders, just takes patience and some beer to help pass the time!!
About ten years ago, I owned a white Mustang Cobra. Not knowing any better, I parked my car next to some railroad tracks while at work. After a while, I noticed a LOT of tiny specks all over my car. Turns out, those specks were tiny bits of "rail" dust. No amount of normal washing and waxing could work them loose.
I then found a local detailer who promised to get the spots out....for the sum of $100! That was a lot of money back then, but I was getting desperate so I agreed and dropped off the car.
That afternoon I returned and was astonished at how bright and shiny my Cobra was. The secret, he used clay bar and lots of elbow grease!
BigRed 03-29-2008, 09:24 AM claybarring is everything for paint--it either makes it or breaks it. if you do it wrong, you are screwed...lol. nice job!
jones75254 03-29-2008, 10:15 AM Gotta love the clay bar. Don, i never get tired of looking at ur rims, frickin sweet.

fahrfegneugen 03-29-2008, 02:13 PM yeah it wasnt expensive about 20 i think with shipping
I guess I will go ahead and give it a try today. I have an old dirty clay bar, so I drove all over town looking for a new one, but everyone is out except for some store 10 mi away.
This should be fun. Thanks for the idea.
09Factor 03-29-2008, 02:20 PM Did you use the Mild,Medium or the Aggressive bar?
Also you followed the directions to cut it in 3 pieces and use one until it wears out and to keep it in it's own bag?
I ask because it looks like you did a great job and would hate something simple to damage the clearcoat.
OSducky 03-29-2008, 03:18 PM I can't focus on the car, those rim's are so nice =x, That does look really nice though, I can't wait till the weather clears soon ............ I would do my car today but it's supposed to rain the next 2 days, and then 1 clear day, and rain for 3 days again ........ I just want to use my zaino so bad
A.Mair 03-29-2008, 04:09 PM thanks everyone for your comments!

i got the meguiars clay bar kit and it didnt say about cutting it into three pieces, and the bar wasnt graded either. so i dunno about that one factor
fahrfegneugen 03-29-2008, 08:08 PM My car looks, by no means, as good as yours, but here is my try with the clay bar. I was impressed, I have never had results this good. I usually just use the paint cleaner, clay bar the extra dirty spots, and then wax. However, doing the whole car really made a difference. I don't have the factory paint, the first owner had the whole car sprayed and it looks like total @#$#@, but this really helped.
This time I did the clay bar, followed by the paint cleaner, and then the wax. There is a pic of everything I used.
Once again thanks for the idea DonJuanM.
oh and sorry the camera lense was a little dirty
shyguyRX8 03-29-2008, 08:19 PM awsome job, i really need to do that with my car

fahrfegneugen 03-29-2008, 08:38 PM fahrfegneugen - whats good with the peanut butter. hahahahaha
It gets the wax off of the plastic, like around the mirrors and the back bumper.
I made a sandwich when I was done too. :yumyum:
awsome job, i really need to do that with my car
DJM is right though, takes about 3-4 hours, but its fun.
Mazurfer 03-29-2008, 08:42 PM I know about the peanut butter trick, but please tell me you didn't use the Joy?
It maybe the best choice of dishwashing soap to use on a car, but go buy some good carwash.

dishwashing soap is supposed to take the old wax off.
Mazurfer 03-29-2008, 08:57 PM :uhh: Brain-fart on my part.
fahrfegneugen 03-29-2008, 09:26 PM Actually I ate the soap and washed the car with the peanut butter :)
A.Mair 03-29-2008, 09:52 PM Dude that looks really good. Its a satisfying feeling when your done too well worth the time. I love the reflections off your car. Did you use it on the headlights too. I found it to be really good for making them smooth again. A lot better than toothpaste!
fahrfegneugen 03-29-2008, 10:23 PM ^
Yeah I did, it worked well to clean out the little specs that were all over them and got some of the dullness out. I should go check how smooth they are.
I had never heard of using toothpaste...
dozer 03-31-2008, 06:13 PM F*CK** sweet man!!!! WOW!! incredible job!!!mad props, i like.

A.Mair 03-31-2008, 09:19 PM Lol it wasnt too bad actually. After you do the first half you see how good it looks and it drives you on
TopGear8 03-31-2008, 09:21 PM Wax on...Wax off...

for me, nah, I go to the gym four to five times a week :) and I wax for money/job occasionally. When I was not use to it though, yeah it could hurt, kind of like tennis elbow. But my bigger problem was with the tech waxes drying my hands out, so I switched to the "all natural" wax.
Dinhx8 04-01-2008, 01:28 PM car looks amazing! glad you had the time to clay it. i like the chop of the skirts too.
thinking about the MS ones?
reaper1 04-01-2008, 01:37 PM If you take your car to a Pro do they use the clay bar or not ? It looks good but that looks like a lot of work. Sometimes I'll spend 1 and half hour washing the car but you guys went beyond .
09Factor 04-01-2008, 01:59 PM i got the meguiars clay bar kit and it didnt say about cutting it into three pieces, and the bar wasnt graded either. so i dunno about that one factor
If it didn't state what it was, it's the mild bar.
They say to seperate the bar in 3 pieces because if you drop one piece you throw it out. You still have 2 good segements left.
If you drop the whole bar and pick up debris, do you want that crap marking up your clearcoat/paint? I don't think so...
It's a best pratice sort of thing..

sometimes i spend a good 6 to 8 hours doing my car, but also include the beer breaks and smoke breaks that i take....but the next morning im really happy:)
