View Full Version : I couldn't do it

So the day finally came where someone offered me more money for my car than what I owe on it.
I financed a bunch, and rolled some from my last car in to it. I knew I would be buried for a while, but eventually I would reach a point where I could walk away without any money out of pocket. And that day finally came.
For those who do not know me ; I work with automotive dealerships for a living. So when a local Mazda store offered me more than what I owe on my car, (ya!! trade in value) a thought ran through my head . .. "I can get out of this car and go get my BMW". So I told the GM to give me a day or two to find another car, then he can have my RX.

So I went and test drove the new 3-series. They are a great car, super nice interior, comfortable, and quick. But when I got back in my RX to drive home, I realized that it brings a smile to my face that no other car ever has. (except maybe my old RX7 gsl-se) And since I still have 2 more years worth of warranty left, I just can't bring myself to get rid of my baby.

So after 26,000 miles with ZERO problems, I am still as much in love with it as the day I drove her home.

Ya, the 335, then they tried to pitch me on waiting a couple more months for the 135.

I love Bimmers . . . but the RX is just WAY too much fun.

Tell them that you car has wings and when it hits 115 on an airport runway it actually takes off without slamming into a bunch of trees. :evil_laug

I'm proud of you, Beagle. Wise choice. Always go with your heart.

I put a huge down payment on mine so I'd never owe more than what it's worth. Peace of mind, if you can swing it.

i had a situation where my uncle offered to trade his 2005 BMW 545i 6-speed for my 8, an 05 GT 6-speed, for a week. I took his car for a spin for an hour and came back requesting my keys back. As great as that car is, faster and more comfy than my 8 no question, it just didnt have that IT factor. It didnt make me smile and giddy inside like the 8.

i guess its true what they say about these cars having "Soul". Its not something thats evident on paper or on a drag strip. Its not something one can explain to someone who has never experienced it. i tell people all the time who rave about how their BMW's are more fun and handle better than a lil Japanese import, JUST TRY IT. I'll give my keys to anyone just to make a point.

BTW, my uncle did not want to give me my 8 back, but i insisted.

Glad you stayed. You don't really find too many of these types of stories. Most cases, the car is OK, but not extraordinary. When it comes to the RX series, a lot of people get so attached to it, they just can't stand to let go.

Not for my broke ass.
I am the poorboy . . .remember.

I just dont like shelling out my money for something that someone else will loan me the money for. (obviously there are more factors than that, so no need for retorts to that statement)

But when I bought this car, it was actually done for financial reasons. It was cheaper than the Corolla I was lookin at. And I worked at a Toyota store at that time!!! So my cost on a XRS Corolla was more than the RX.
Here is the great part . . . my last car I owed more than what I got . . . .and the dealer stepped up HUGE on my trade. ( it was a toyota, I worked for toyota, I knew what it was worth) Yet I bought the RX for exactly what i was just offered. So for the last year and a half, I have technically still been paying on my old toyota :banghead: while driving a Mazda :)

ouch...at least you stayed with the car. unless you were going to go out and pay straight cash for something, you did the right thing.

I am not rich but my family and friends are pretty well off and I drive their BMW's and 'Cedes all the time. It always makes me feel better once I get back in my car. There's just not the same feeling that the RX8 gives me. :) Brings a smile to my face. Sorry about crashing your thread.

So I did it again.
I put my car on autotrader and started looking at BMW's.

I thought maybe a coupe with a little more HP would be nice to have. But after driving several of them, I would get back in my 8 to drive to the next dealership and realize . . . .. the 8 is what I am looking for, not a BMW.

So yesterday I had someone come by to look at my car. He offered me the full asking price if I included the wheels, and I turned him away. I felt bad, but I had made the appointment with him before I test drove the other cars.

Looks like the 8 stays for another 6 months.

I actually drove one of those too. They are quick, but heavy. Very smooth power, really nice interior, but a little bit too much weight to really corner the way I want it to.
I am actually looking at the E46, the body style that ran through 2005. They are a couple hundred pounds lighter than the new ones, but still available with all the goodies you would expect from a BMW.

bgl: you crack me up

I am glad I can bring some laughter to your day. :)

good choice so few things in life truely make a person happy, if an rx8 can do it why mess with success?

Exactly. I bought an 83 RX-7 GSL a few weeks ago and i am having a freakin ball goin back and forth from the 8 to the 7. The 7 is my commuter/run erronds car and the 8 is my weekender/special event car. Somethin about that rotary that sticks. Just love them. My goal is to have one of each: FB, FC, SE3P and the mack daddy FD. I wouldnt mind picking up an old pre-7 RX car as well, they are cool looking lil suckers.

You have the same goals as me :) Except, for now, I'm OK with just owning one of each...not really at the same time, just in general. Just need a 3rd gen now.
