View Full Version : Color, are you happy with it?
Right now I'm kinda stuck as to which color I should get. I know its a personal decision but, I'm having a hard time picking the one I really like.
I'd have to say Red is the color that drew me to the car, then again its there flagship as well. I've never owned a red car so I'm asking all of you out there that have red, do wish you got something else?
Is red a color that gets tiring after a few years?
Right now I have a black vehicle and have owned that for 10 years. I really like black but, have not really seen that mainly black pics of the vehicle nor any black RX8's either. Fr om what I have seen in pics, it seems to hide the contrasts of the vehicle and its lines as well. Correct me if I'm wrong and please post some pics too.
Titanium is also really nice and started to grow on me, but then again I get that feeling of hey, this is a sports car, so get a sports car color. So it brings me back to red.
Silver is also very nice, and it does match the rims and the contrast well. I'm a bit undecided on this but, doesn't appeal as much as the red, black or titanium.
I guess I ruled the remaining colors out.
This would be my first sports car and vehicle in 10 years. I had a little minitruck since I was in high school. Nice to not have any payments so I can be debt free to purchase this car. I'm not asking for anyone to make a decision for me , but I just want different perspectives about this topic. Thanks.
Tony
RX-GR8 11-07-2003, 09:25 AM i have had 5 red cars. a VW beetle back in college, 1976 grand prix, 1988 MR2, 1997 Eclipse and now my RX-8. i have no regrets getting a red 8 and i even have the red/black interior which i like alot. the silver is also very nice as is the titanium.
MyRxBad 11-07-2003, 09:52 AM Best thing to do is see all the colors in person and then decide. I know this helped me decide which color I wanted. Cars tend to look a lot different in person then in any pictures.
Zonker04 11-07-2003, 10:16 AM I bought red, mainly because my wife liked it a great deal, I liked it a fair amount, and it was the only sport package I could find locally. I kinda wish I had held out for blue or yellow, because I do think I prefer those colors. However, the red is really striking and I am not unhappy with it, it's just a matter of maybe liking the other two a little better. Everyone who comments on the car seems quite impressed with how rich the red is. Here's a photo, which I saturated a little bit to bring out how it looks in person.
I was leaning towards silver or red until I went to the dealership. Titanium Grey is where it is at in my opinon.
rx8ntexas 11-07-2003, 10:50 AM I have silver and really like it. The titanium is really cool and the red is brilliant. Saw a yellow one at my dealer today and it is really cool but personally I couldn't live with a yellow car...My Rx-7 is White and if the 8 came in White I'd probably gone with that color. I've even thought about down the road getting mine painted white as I've seen some pics of custom white jobs and really really like it....my pic is to your left...but there is more girl than car but you get the idea :D

I have a blue 8. However, it is an A/T.;)
If it was not so hard to keep it looking clean & polished, I would have gotten black.
I have the titanium grey and have not wash my baby 8 for at least 3 weeks. A few rain periods in between and the car still looks very clean!!!
Peakster 11-07-2003, 12:09 PM Everyone loves the color they chose, but my velocity red looks stunning in the sunlight. In my opinion, there is not a car on the road with a color that gorgeous.
wahoo 11-07-2003, 12:32 PM I have had the same delima, and I keep changing my mind.
Blue - Flashy, sports car color
Titanium - Classy look, sort of a trendy color these days.
Silver - Very sharp, shows off car well. Lots of Silver cars on road, but sets itself off by being a touch lighter.
Black - good looking, but "hides" some of the curves. Hard to keep clean
Nordic Green - see black.
Red - Not for me
Yellow - Not for me.
Right now, I am waffling between blue and Titanium. Was leaning toward Titanium and drove by the dealership at lunch (didnt stop). Didn't see a Titanium, but saw a blue one out front. Now I am leaning to Blue.
Wahoo!
If you can't decide between colors you really need to seem them on the car in person. Walk around the car; sit in it, etc. for each color. Let it sink in.
No question for me - this car was made for Yellow :D Hoping to get a custom interior with yellow leather inserts in the same manner as the red/black. If it works out I'll post pics of my "bumblebee" :)
My color is silver and I have to say it helps to keep the car looking clean all of the time. Always nice. I also would have gone with white, if available. I used to own a white RX7 convertible (one of my favorite cars of all time.)
Red will bring lots of "looks", expecially from those eyes that write speeding tickets. I won't own one. I have friends who are cops and they tell me "Don't buy a red car!"
For me, I might have gone with the blue color and that would have been the most flashy car I ever owned. On the other hand, I think the silver has a classy look. I am a 51 year old professional and I like "nice", not "flash". (At least not an overstated flash, but again, I'm 51... what do I know?)
The black version will always look like it needs a cleaning. A scratch will produce a white line. (Same for the green and charcoal grey - err, Titanium.)
Yellow? Yellow!?! You got to be someone who wants attention or be the type that colors their hair orange or purple. Just kidding. On the other hand, yellow is a pretty bold color.
Yup, silver is okay with me. Understated classic look with the utility of always looking clean without constant effort.

Nubo, A dealership in North Texas has one appointed in just this way. I'm not sure of your location, but if you're local it's worth a look.
Color is a very personal choice, but there are some practical aspects that are worth thinking about, especially since you're in sunny Florida.
Dark colors get hotter in the sun. I had a black car which would melt plastic things like CD cases and the steering wheel would get too hot to hold sometimes. I had to run the AC continually in the summer.
Also, dark colors show dust, dirt and swirl marks in the paint much more than lighter colors. I had a beige metallic car before getting my Nordic Green 8 (I live in Seattle, so heat isn't an issue!) and my friends referred to it as "dirt colored". That was very convenient because it didn't look bad when it was dirty. My black car always looked dirty even after I'd detailed it! Looked awesome in the dealership though!
Finally, visibility. Dark cars are harder for other people to see. There's probably some accident statistic about this. I'm always wary of people pulling out in front of me because my Nordic Green looks almost black in some lights. The other downside is that hardly anyone seems to notice my RX-8, the color doesn't stand out on the road. It gets a lot more attention in slow traffic or when parked than when I'm driving (ummm...but maybe that's because I'm usually driving it at warp 10!)
When I got the brochure for the RX-8 in the mail I thought "well these colors suck!" It wasn't until I saw them on the cars that I found out that they're all very good colors. I'd be happy with any color except yellow (sorry Nubo! It looks good on a Miata, not convinced about on an RX-8. Got to say I like your wasp idea tho'). I don't normally like red, but the RX-8 red is really nice because of the mica flecks in the paint.
Go to a dealer, look at the colors and decide which you think the car looks best in. Then go and agonize about the seat colors. Damn, another choice!
P00Man 11-07-2003, 01:57 PM in all honesty, you cant go wrong with any of the colors, they are all beautiful colors and look really nice on the car.
i have a winning blue, its a gorgeous color, thought i know thats not on your list. That aside, i couldnt be happier with the color.
you seem to want the red most, i would go with that, you will definately not be dissapointed. its a rare color and looks very handsome on the car. go to a dealership and look around, they will prob have most of the colors you are thinking about somewhere on the lot. take a look and see what you like the most.

loco4rx8 11-07-2003, 02:18 PM I can't agree more - the best advice you can get is to make sure you see all the colors in person before you decide. I was agonizing for weeks over "Titanium or Blue". They are both so gorgeous, but I hadn't seen a blue one anywhere, just in pictures. As soon as I saw the blue in person, I knew that's what I had to get. That's when it hits you and the decision is made.
I must also agree that ALL the colors are great on this car. I normally don't like Red, but this red is great! I would never consider red on any other car, but it was actually on my short list on the RX-8.
Good luck and let us know what you decide!
druck 11-07-2003, 02:41 PM Here is my take on the ones I've seen
Velocity Red - in dull conditions a deep marron, but under sunlight catches fire to turn a brilliant red with almost orange high lights.
Winning Blue - a hundred different shades of blue all at once
Titanium Grey - fantastic understated colour tinted by the sky, makes the car look very solid.
Sunlight Silver - shows off the lines the best, makes the car look very sleek.
Brilliant black - sooooo shiny it hurts - but only if you wash it every day.
Nordic Greem - (haven't seen it yet).
Yellow - No!
Cheers

texlaw 11-07-2003, 05:27 PM Having previously owned a red sports car, with the tickets to prove it, the red was out of the question for me even though the 8 red is probably the best looking paint color I have ever seen on a car. I waited for quite a while to be able to see the other colors in person. No photo does justice to any of the colors IMO. Mazda did a great job with each of them. I thought the green was just too dark. If it was not in direct full sunlight, it looked like black. In fact, I was driving past the dealer after reading that there was a green in stock and drove right past the first time because I thought it was a black one. The Titanium is gorgeous and I was sorely tempted to get one. When I saw the Blue, however, it was all over. That's the first one I saw in the blue and that's the one I bought!
tribal azn2 11-07-2003, 06:01 PM honestly i regret not having gotten red. there were only 3 choices for me because i wanted the red leather and only tittty grey, red, and black came with red leather.
black - looks absolutly sik..... when clean. i had owned a black car and it was so hard to keep it clean and looking nice
red - looks absolutly amazing. i hesitated getting it because i thought the red paint with red leather might be too much.
druck 11-07-2003, 06:55 PM No, red car with red and black leather is just perfect. I'm sure some would call it a tarts boudiour, but what the hell, you know what sort of fun you can have in one of those :D I dont think it will be possible to go back to a boring black interior ever again.
mikeb 11-07-2003, 07:46 PM My last car I paided $3,500 for it to be painted daytona blue
This is the first red car I've ever owned and I love it
FIrst off...... all colours look great on the 8.
At first i wanted Red. But I decided to pick yellow. I couldn't be happier with the yellow. The colour really grew on me, and I think I made the right chioce.
But again .... all colours look awesome on the 8!

I second that opinion. I always hated it when my black RX-7 would look dirty after the first rain, but the Titanium wears dirt very well - I've actually only washed my 8 twice since I got it in August. Worst problem is brake dust on the wheels.
"I was leaning towards silver or red until I went to the dealership. Titanium Grey is where it is at in my opinon." My thought exactly, then I got Titanium
vibec 11-08-2003, 11:33 PM I got the red one, the photos don't give it justice, you have to see it in the sun.
However, the colour that I would really have wanted was the mazda white. I have no idea why they decided not to release it in australia.
White really shows the bodywork details, my MX-5 looked timeless in white.
Oh well, at least i have the red/black leather to compensate.
RedJade 11-09-2003, 01:19 AM In 1990 I went shopping for my first new car. I just knew I was going to get a White Honda Prelude. I fell in love with a Red Toyota Celica GT-S. This time I was sure I was going to get a Silver Infiniti G35 Coupe. Then I saw the 8 online. I drove to a dealership after dusk and fell in love with the Silver 8 and was sure I was going to buy it. I came back in the day to test drive it and then saw the Red 8 drive by in the sunlight. It was over for me then.
My point is that you can think about and debate the issue, but go see them, in all types of light, and you will know which one is for you.
Twin 8s! 11-09-2003, 07:15 AM We have two 8s...
One Blue and one black. Last weekend my wife and I got our first Zaino treatment completed on both cars.
The blue is incredible with just one coat of Z2.
Then we did the black 8. Oooh baby... after a Z2 treatment it is hot!
My wife ordered her Blue 8. I just bought my while we were waiting for her's to coming. IMHO I think:
- the titanium grey looks classy
- the yellow is sharp... but maybe a ticket magnet
- the red is nice
- the silver is sharp... but just too darn many silver cars on the road here
Boy they all look good and we are happy with both the blue and black.
:D
Jump120MPH 11-09-2003, 09:51 AM I love my BLUE!!! That color is awesome. I like the Silver too.
trinity77 11-09-2003, 07:10 PM I love my Winning Blue! Just put my 6th coat of Zaino and it keeps looking better and better.
Friends all say it is an awesome color.
I didn't get Red since I thought it would be a ticket magnet - the Blue stands out a bit so that may have been a moot point.:D
shift_zoom8 11-10-2003, 07:15 AM I think the 8 is highly atypical in that it seems it would look great in juat about any color, not just the ones available. This is a testament to the strong yet graceful lines, reminiscent of Italian designs like those from Ferrari, with long sloping hoods and compact wrap-around rear ends.
In addition, every color available just happens to be well done, which is also highly unusual. Take the 2004 Honda Accord as a counterexample. It has a great dark grey metallic but terrible burgundy, green metallic, and blue metallic. Similarly, even though the Acura TSX has a nice pearl white, pearl carbon grey, and a typically nice silver, it comes in an odd pearl blue and meteor silver metallic (a bluish grey hue). The Nissan 350Z and Infiniti FX have one of the worst, most-faded, cheapest-looking reds I have ever seen. Even the BMW 3-Series has some odd shades. However for each general color category, the 8 has an extremely well chosen color. You can't go wrong.
Having said all that, my personal choices are titanium gray, black, and red.
(1) I bought the titanium because I think it looks more futuristic and "liquid' than the silver (and everyone knows there are too many silver cars of all brands on the road). Also, I need a conservative color that better serves an adult professional.
(2) Many people probably think exotic cars are supposed to look great in red. I believe they're supposed to look great in black. EVery company has a slightly different red but black seems to be black no matter what. It's a great single standard by which to judge all cars. Black also seems to smooth curves BUT accentuate angles or anything that's not gracile, smooth, or subtle. Sometimes this means emphasizing a swooping, muscular tone while other times this means emphasizing ridiculous, chunky block lines like those on a Pontiac or Saturn. Occasionally, I'll pass by a parked Mercedes SL or Porsche 911 and marvel at how "exotic" and impressive their long, wide hoods appear. Same for the classic Ferrari 365GTB, if you've ever seen one. The 8 in black is much the same. It's definitely exotic looking from the front. What's more, from the back, the black amplifies the already-aggressive stance by adding to the contrast between the rectangular-round double-bubble roofline and the pronounced rear-fender flares.
(3) There's no doubt the red is an extra-special one. There's nothing like it out there, and I agree it's everything other people here have said it is. I also agree that sometimes under the night sky, it appears brownish, morose, and moribund. It can almost induce you into a deeply depressive trance, if you get obsessive-compulsive about it and fixate. And maybe that's exactly what you need to get you ready for the gas mileage. LOL.
dankgummy 11-10-2003, 08:59 AM I have nordic green and absolutely love it. Originally, I wanted the titanium grey but when I saw the green, it was kinda cloudy outside and i thought it was the titanium grey. at night, it looks black. i only wish the car had the chapparal interior..oh well
ChrisW 11-10-2003, 12:22 PM I really don't think the colors are that good. I think the car looks great in any color (even yellow!) because it's a great looking car, not because the colors are that good. I chose red by default - I just didn't like any of the others.
I usually buy silver, but I thought the Sunlight Silver was too light (something like the silver on the S2000 would have been ideal). Having said that, I bet it looks great in the evening or at night.
I'm afraid I just don't "get" Titanium. It's dark grey isn't it? On a sports car? There's obviously something I'm missing here.
I normally like metalic blues, but I would have preferred something a bit more subtle (i.e. darker) than the Winning Blue (the X-men blue looked great - why didn't they go with that?)
I like dark metalic greens too e.g. the metalic green on the Audi TT is fantastic. So why did Mazda go and make their's almost indistinguishable from black?
And then there's black. Flat gloss black. Why no metalic or pearlescent effect?
Don't get me wrong, RX-8's in all the above colors look great, I just think they look great in spite of their colors not because of them.

I have, although it was quite overcast. It didn't look bad. I'm sure it never does whatever the light. But I can't help feel it's just a little bit bland and nondescript. The color I mean, not the car. Let's face it, if you want to be inconspicuous you've chosen the wrong car in the RX-8.

Okay that's my dad...okay my thoughts the black is absolutely sexy and with the Z2 oh man it looks like oil running through the curves very nice and the blue is nice but I think is more feminine than a red or black sports car (no offense if your a guy and own a blue one, whatever floats your boat) I think the blue was different kind of original and the black is just drop sexy...yellow very sporty not very classy, silver it's ok, red very cool but most often color it's bought in... so there is my opinion sorry if I didn't clear anything up for you. Honestly whatever color makes squeak is the one for you *Warning* Red if it sits out in the sun without a good wax oxidation is more visible...and black is cool and I love it just too DAMN HIGH MAITNENCE!!! SHEESH

True
I went to check some RX8 a few weeks ago, and was kinda disappointed by the red color, it was about 4 in the afternoon, and really didn't catch fire in those light condition... at that time, I wished Mazda to release a Milano Red version... it just look awesome on my Teg. But like you said, in the right condition, the Red is on fire!!
The winning blue is awesome as well... all those shade of blue... I wonder how the paint will respond with a nice wax or when it will age tho... it's really nice.
Titanium grey/Silver... I am not really sure about the titanium... I have seen a few pics of the mazdaspeed version which is supposed to be titanium (right?), but the real life color was so much darker, almost like a nordic green... unless i saw the wrong color or in dull condition.
cruzdreamer 11-12-2003, 04:11 PM Just showed 4 of my relatives the car......They felt that Sunlight silver showed the lines of the car the best. It's bright and I was going between grey and silver and in different lighting the grey just looked too dark to me. I had a red car before so I wanted something different. It is tough to chose.....I think you will be happy with any color. Go with your gut! Good luck!
Senseny 11-12-2003, 05:13 PM I have winning blue and love the color. The other colors I would have considered would be the titanium and nordic green (very cool color in person). I have an FD that is painted Porsche Black mettalic with silver mettalic stripes. I like that as well.

You must have seen the wrong color. Titanium isn't anywhere near as dark as Nordic Green. What I like about it is that it has almost a bluish tint in bright sunlight, and it stays looking clean.
Thommo 11-13-2003, 10:14 AM I took delivery of a Velocity Red this week and it looks sensational !
You will see consistent feedback from this thread, that you do need to see this car in person, to make the right decision.
I deliberated for ages and started off with a preference for silver, then test drove a black leather pack which had me hooked.
However, having owned a black beemer for a number of years, I know what a nightmare it is to keep the car looking great and also, every little scratch and chip shows up so clearly. The other downside to black is that it gets hot so quickly in the sun.
I actually ordered black, only to arrive to take delivery and find out that the sales goose had ordered it with an all black interior instead of the black and red, that I had requested.
To cut a long messy story short, I had him change my order to a Velocity Red with red & black leather pack.
I could'nt be happier with the outcome.
GO RED !!.... I guarantee that you will be delighted
8 is enough 11-13-2003, 11:05 AM red is by far the best, every time you go out to your car there will be different lighting and it will look like a new car, it still amazes me to see the different shades that are possible. At the college i atend i park by two different typs of lights, and the way they play off each other and catch the mica, its awsome, i used to own a dark green lexus and hated the color is was always dirty and always had to explain what color it was b/c it always looked black, but go with what ever makes you happy
payam 11-13-2003, 11:39 AM Mine is brilliant black. I have had several people tell me thats the best looking color they have seen on the 8. I don't think it hides the curves. My only complaint is the grills behind the front wheels don't stick out, I will probably paint mine silver. Since I now own 3 black cars I just deal with the fact they are hard to keep clean but when they are there is nothing more Beautiful.

We have a blue and a black RX-8. Both are great. I painted the fender grills silver on both after reading about it on another thread.... It looks great.
