Seeing the film "21", a question came to mind. Assume you are 18 years old, just finished high school. You are also such a mathematical genius to the point that ONCE a year you have the opportunity to go to a casino for a week and successfully win $300,000. Would you still go to college or live the rest of you life on $300k/year by going to the casino 1 week/year???

If the person is a math whiz, they'd instantly know which one would pay off.

It really boils down to profession - some of them require a degree. Many others do not.

After a while, your background in the field can supersede what college (if any) you went to.

You got to go to college; it makes you a more rounded individual. On another note: Isn't 21 released this Friday?

I am still looking for the day to retire and become a "professional" poker player for a living. I have one quite a few big tourney purses but just dont feel like I am ready for THE BIG jump. Planning to hit one of the circuit events on a weekend off work and just see how it fairs out.. If I can manage to hit 2-3 of those close to home and cash out against those players I think I would do it. I do love my job/profession (which I went to college for), but it comes down to love/passion. which one tips the scales more? There are numerous people that I know personally who have left 100k+ annual salary jobs to become teachers, vets, etc and now making 60k or less. It came down to the love for those professions outweighing the amount of money they made.

I would vote both.

I work full time while going to school and the only thing that bothers me about it is that I don't have as much time to actually be involved more at the school. with $300,000/yr that wouldn't be an issue. Go away to school, go one day a yr and make the $300,000 and then finish school. You may have a bunch of money, but what are you going to do with it all if you have no friends?

fall break, spring break, winter break, summer break, skip a week of school, it would be soo easy to do both.

I would personally still go to college while getting the money. I would have nothing but free time, I'd want to further my education and avoid bordom.

i would do both. even if i won the lotto and never had to worry about money, i still would finish college.

There is no reason, by this scenario, that the math genius can't do BOTH.

Go to college AND go to the casino once a year for a week.

The Math genius can take various courses online or setup his schedule so he can get his 1 week crack at the Casinos.

The sad thing is if you properly invested all the money you would spend while going to college...in most cases you would earn more money on that investment than ever with a degree.

Don't let anyone tell you a sharp mind is cheap.

You would go to college to make 300,000 a year. You should follow your interests and if college can help you do that, then go. If other things work better then do that. College is not the only way to learn and better yourself.

Honestly, if it really is one or the other, and that's really implausible, I'd take the money.

And yes I did go to college...

My father-in-law did both. He graduated from Ohio State in the early 60's with a Ph.D in Physics funded mostly by card counting. He didn't go for big hauls just enough to get by on for a while. The only other work he did was as an Illusionist (Magician) which was about once a month or so at different clubs in Ohio.

He retired about 10 years ago as a Grad Professor at U of Az., and hasn't been to a casino in probably 40 years now.

if you are winning consistently, they will eventually know and ban you from casinos all around the globe

go to college, if theres one thing i learned, later in life, you require degrees if anything, surpasses any amount of money you may have accumulated

but then, thats a political mind speaking

If it was $300k per year guaranteed adjusted for inflation I still would forgo my degree. Yes a degree is nice, but most jobs that require a college degree don't even pay more. Of course, if that $300k isn't guaranteed, then a college degree would be the safer bet.

First, job security. You would have to ensure that 40 years from now, you would still be able to do this.

Second, on that note, AND just like the movie 21, the security team is going to catch on. One huge flaw in the movie is when you win that much money, you must pay taxes on it. The casino will record all your information before the money is turned over to you. How many people do you think they get cashing in $300k in chips? VERY VERY few. If you come and cash in once a year and you're always $300k up.... don't you think someone is going to catch on? I bet it doesn't take longer than 6-7 times VEGAS WIDE. (Many of the casinos are owned by the same group)

Lastly, just as in the movie, someone will rat you out. You can try to keep it a secret, but after 5-6 years of doing it, a couple people are bound to know something. People are greedy.

But hell....... I'd still do it

If someone were to do this they would definitely have to travel a little bit. Vegas at one point, Atlantic City at another, and maybe Biloxi. After hitting some of those places you could find other smaller areas with casinos.

As far as the question at hand...initially I thought to myself there is no way in hell I would go to school if I didn't have to but after thinking about it I would take a couple of classes here and there moreso for the social aspects of it (or maybe we should just say to meet the ladies).

The American college system takes into account a broad spectrum of studies where students gain a better appreciation for other cultures and fields of study. Also, a good education will show someone how to earn more than 300K. I'd take the education for those reasons.

I would stay in school. Because it is only a matter of time before the luck runs out or you would be banned from the Casino's through out the Country.
