Isn't it under the rear seats? The bottom cushions just pull out and there are metal covers that come off to get to the fuel tank. That's all I know though...

You are correct, its a part of the fump pump which is located in the tank under one of the rear seats. Since it only needs to be changed at 100,000 miles it is something most owners do not need to worry about. You can see photos of it HERE (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=105156&page=3) Mazda is the only source of this part that I know of. Mazmart sells used pumps FYI.

not enough to establish a defective pump issue. I put 100,000 miles on mine and I Pre-mixed with no issues except the <1/4 tank on the track issue. Bad gas and using certain pre-mixes might cause issues but again the jury is out. Its not like we have another pump / filter option to go to.

They have Aftermarket fuel pumps in Japan.
All I know is that can flow 255 Liter per hour or something.

ok so after having the wife call mazda several times to get a filter they are convinced you can not get to it with out droping the tank and pulling the pump apparently the filter is in the pump(expo1)????. is this true ? and why the hell can't i get them to even sell me a filter?? The reason i want to change is really just for shits and giggles also the last owner lived in the fucking sand so no telling what is in there. any ideas?

The reason they can't just sell a filter is that there isn't one to sell. The 'filter' is part of the fuel pump which goes for on Rockauto.com for $237 its BOSCH Part # 67271. You don't need to drop the tank, just lift up one of the rear seats. They do say you need a special tool to remove the retaining clip but others have done so with hand tools.
