Wondering when people were thinking of removing the winter boots and putting the summer tires back on? I know it is still early and we can get a few more storms in southern ontario but I am itching to put her into some corners with the summers on.

This week, and drive my Suburban if it snows some more.

The streets here are snow free now, don't want to wear my soft winter boots out.

It's too early if it's your only car.

I would say keep it on if it's your DD.

You never know when mothernature is going to hit us with another snowfall.

I wish I can take me car out!...

Well mine is stored for winter, but I am not taking it out until 1) the snow is gone and 2) at least 1 good rain after that to clean off the salt.

With the ridiculous winter we're going through, my guess would be August sometime. Right around the time I take my bike out of storage...

August? are you serious? your missing the entire summer!

Im itching to put them on, I usually had them on by March 13th, but its just too cold still. Im thinking maybe this weekend.

Well, no...I was being facetious. My guess would be the second or third week of April, but a freak snowfall into May wouldn't surprise me entirely. Remember that winter tires are more than just about the tread pattern and dealing with snow, sleet, or ice. The compound of the rubber is designed to provide better traction at anything below +7 C, which is the tipping point between a dedicated winter tire and an all-season or summer tire as far as tire stiffness goes. Until the temperature gets above that and pretty much stays there, you're giving up that advantage that a winter tire would still provide you.

There is always 1 or 2 suprise snow storms in March. Last year we had one in April.

Winter tires wont wear prematurely if temps stay below 8c IMO.

I usually wait until its consitently over 8c or early april.

Mid to late April is typical for a daily driver

I agree with that, I prolly won't put my summer tires on my 8 until late April either.

I usually change whenever the temperature stays in the positives and the salt is gone. Somewhere around the beginning of April.

I'm taking mine off in a week or so. My lease is up in a couple of months and I have to put some new tires on the 8. I might as well get some use out of them before I send the car back.

Quick Question, Partsource is having a sale on a verticle free stand tirerack. Right now my summers are in the basement one top of each other cover, vertically. Should I get one of tire racks, when storing my winter tires? It is useful for the mainteance of the wheels in order to avoid flat spots?

Whats the best way to get the car up in the air on a driveway? I hear the safest way is to use ramps on one side and jack stands on the other, is that right?

Buy a jack and jack stand set from crappy tire (make sure you measure the clearance from the ground to the reinforced section under the car where the jack cup makes contact. It was pretty tight with the drop from my springs, and I only found one brand that went low enough).

The trolley jack is way more convenient than digging out the scissors jack from your trunk. On a level surface, lift one corner of the car up and then slip the jack stand under the reinforced section as well. Never just use a jack to hold up the car unless you want to join darwin's list. Doing one wheel at a time, you can swap all four in about 30-45 mins.

Yeah...have done it a few times....hopefully all the changes at Hwy 6 north of the 403 won't effect it.

I was coming out of the Rona tonight...clean car....summer wheels....I forgot how good the 8's look...the black steel wheels really take the "wow" factor away from a great looking car.

Now we just need to get the sand/gravel off the roads and we are all good.

Yea I thought about waiting but it's so nice out now and the weather forecasts seem to be all near double digit...and I figure I can just hitch a ride with people once or twice if it does snow again...

Footman
04-08-2008, 07:50 AM
you guys are screwed to put it on so early... these double digit numbers are an illusion! The upcoming forecast next week we're back to 0 - 5 degrees, and dipping to negatives at night.

Drive safely.. I'm gonna wait awhile bit, still rolling on winter tires for safety.

Nice day today here for the BoSox home opener... and an '8 drive on Summer tires. Actually, it was 33 degf this am but supposed to be in the high 50's early pm with bright April Sun. Finally!!!!

If the weather turns bad, I just take 45 minutes and put the winters back on. No big deal.

Just curious ... is it safe to drive around on winters when its 15C out?

Huey52
04-08-2008, 08:48 AM
Heck, that's 59 degf (15C). Sure, no problem. My rule of thumb is 40 degf or better (4.4C) for Summer's, but clearly there's a lot of overlap.

I drive a few times in the Winter on my stock Dunlop Summer tires (snow/ice/salt free days only). The tires are harder at lower temps, but if you keep the speed down no problem. They're still tires [on a dry road].

Footman

winters are safe to drive in 15C, why not? they're desigend for cold weather, so warm weather, they're still good.. just that slight drop in fuel economy cause they're so mushy.

Rems31
04-08-2008, 10:52 AM
yea it's not like im going crazy on these tires at 2am when the weather is near or below 0C so I don't know how I'm 'screwed'. :-P

Rems31

that it is...never done it though :-P
and I think it's crazy for anyone to go over the 150km/h mark now that stupid law is in place. I think I'd start crying if they impounded my 8 :lol2:
