View Full Version : 30.8 Mpg !
steverothery 03-17-2008, 04:36 PM I was driving down from scotland to southampton (total distance is 450 miles), wasn't even TRYING, sitting around 70-78 mph as I was in no rush. 346miles - and the light was STILL not on, given it came on very shortly after that. (so i could have went at least 30 miles) Pretty damn impressive is the fact the car only had 100 odd miles on the clock when i started driving. Also I just filled up the car there when I stopped to take the photograph as i found a service station. It took 51 litres of fuel. That means there was at least another 6-7 usable litres left! MPG figure =30.8 !!
192 - winning blue, full leather.
I might add, in 8 months time when i'm going home for Christmas - i will hit 400miles, and if i don't i may die (of boredom) trying.
I will let you know what i get around town - i do drive it like i stole it every few fill ups!
Feel free to join anytime!
Ps remember in the UK 1 gallon = 4.54 litres!
rotarygod 03-17-2008, 04:38 PM 3.6 liters per gallon.
51 liters = 14.16 gallons.
346 miles / 14.16 gallons = 24.43 mpg
How did you figure 30.8? It's right where it should be.
steverothery 03-17-2008, 04:41 PM Dude - im scottish a gallon in the UK is 4.54litres remember. But yes USA wise your correct.
expo1 03-17-2008, 05:01 PM So you should have posted this in the Europe forum with a title " 30.8 Miles per UK Gallon or the lounge if you were just being funny.

I tried to explain that Imperial Gallon once to some English. They didn't believe me that it was one of the reasons their cars got better mileage than ours. Come to thinkg of it, dinner coversation in England has become more and more of "Please don't burn me to death because I'm American".

Isn't that how it is when you have dinner conversations with anybody else outside of the US?
*EDIT* I went ahead and did a spell check on a few words din your post. I was getting annoyed with the darned Firefox "red line under misspelled words" line.

Feel free to correct my typing any time :) . Yes, conversations in many parts of the world boil down to please don't burn me because I am American, but the dinner conversation in question is with some of my oldest and dearest friends and some former clients. I used to live in them there parts, and I am God Father to one person's daughter.

steverothery 03-18-2008, 12:36 PM Well, 25mpg american is still pretty good for this car. I still don't get why america has the date different to the rest of the world. Same with the gallon thing.
Who wants to know the MONTH before the day>
Pretty dumbass stuff.
12/31/08 so thats - 31st december 2008? (D'OH!)
Remember it's called "new" hampshire for a reason lol...oh and expo- did you know there was a place called "manchester" here first?
Greetings from the original hampshire!
And ps i'd like to point out i am infact not english - i'm scottish, best damn whiskey drink in the world.

This reminds me of the three pieces of advice my grand mother ever gave me. 1) How to double clutch a car 2) Never grow old 3) Never drink bath tub gin. She went blind for three days after a party in New York.

Scotland is a lovely place. I car camped through it once. Best whiskey ... have you tried all the others? Now, Pennsylvania Rye was once a great stinky whiskey, but alas it has gone the way of all things.
I've been meaning to ask you. Is your car a high power or a low power?
I have to agree with you about the date.
steverothery 03-18-2008, 01:18 PM Mines is the 192 HP, so it gets a bit more on the mileage front. I'm not throwing it about constantly (i use it for work and carry lots of suitcases with scalpals etc in them lol so not too good.) But i do beep it coming in and out of roundabouts and tight corners when i can.

Huey52 03-18-2008, 01:29 PM Actually it is IS Ethanol, as are all distilled whiskies. Corn, or in the case of fine Single Malt Scottish, Barley.

lol, The entire existence of America is based on being different or doing their own thing, that's why the original settlers left Europe isn't it?
Huey52 03-18-2008, 01:41 PM Yep, the reason we drink coffee predomiantly is tea was seen as too British after the Revolution. We went 180 degrees on most everything.
Riddle me this, if 'merican stagecoach drivers were on the right side ("shotgun" on the left) why don't we drive auto's on the right side like the Brits?

As a serious whiskey drinker, I just refuse to make assertions as to what whiskey is the best. I miss my local PA whiskey, but alas it is no more. I like Scotch. I had some 60 year old Johnny Walker a few years back that wasn't bad for a blended scotch and a 1940 single Malt something or other when I was in Scotland that was also dead good. Scotch whiskey is very, very good. I would certainly say that. Mostly I drink Balvenie these days, which I like very much, but I also drink Jim Beam, Sazerac Rye, Powers Irish ... depends what I'm in the mood for. I could be drunk now. Who knows? Certainly not me.
Bell lived in America when he invented the phone. Philo Farnsworth was a Scot? Who knew. He also was living in America at the time.
Enjoy Scotland. Lovely people there. I remember them as being so very friendly when I was travelling and offering all kinds of help with rooms and food and drink. Learned a lot about the Clearances when I was there too. Also hit a sheep. Pretty much had the whole experience.
neit_jnf 03-18-2008, 01:52 PM you think US is backwards in units compared to the rest of the world? Maybe but in PR it's surely confusing! Since we were a Spanish colony before becoming a Commonwealth of the USA we have a mixture of units! A few examples:
Drinking water, juices, milk, etc: US Gallons
Gasoline: Liters (currently at 80 some cents per liter)
Engine Oil: US quarts
Speed limit: MPH
Street signs with distance to destination: Km
Lenght Measurements: Inches, Feet, etc
Land lot measurements: squared meters
Doh!
steverothery 03-18-2008, 01:54 PM It don't matter tho if they where IN american they are still scottish lol.

True america did that. But alot of it was for no real logical reason - it was just to "be different". The date thing is a perfect case in point.
Dude we drive on the left side in britain. Yes it's about a 50/50 split around the world but makes much more sense if you have a country with roundabouts. Ie you go round it clockwise.

Winfree 03-18-2008, 04:38 PM I like Monty Python's observation that if you meet a Scotsman, and he is still ticking, you have to put his head in a bucket of wiskey!
A lot of Highlanders settled in the US early because of the English extermination efforts and we still have clans here that no longer exist in Britian - If you ever come stateside, try to visit one of our highland games - you will be made very very welcome!

Huey52 03-19-2008, 07:09 AM I meant we 'merican drivers are on the left side of the vehicle as opposed to Brit right side. Our ol' western stage coaches had drivers on the right side.
Actually, the American military uses the day-month-year arrangement and also the [French-like] noun before adjective convention, e.g. socks, olive drab, pair, one each.
We have rotaries ('roundabouts') and simply go counter-clockwise ('anti-clockwise'). :)
True america did that. But alot of it was for no real logical reason - it was just to "be different". The date thing is a perfect case in point.

steverothery 03-19-2008, 12:49 PM Even one of your american colleagues admitted the date thing is dumb. The american military? Just because they use that format doesn't mean it has logic. Days change every day, a month changes - err once a month ie every 28-31 days. So how can it be logical to put the month first? Hm, Sadly british and american military are still wasting time and money screwing around in iraq becuase of old bushy boy. What happened to common sense? And we still haven't found beardy sandal wearing (with socks) bin ladin yet! everybody - altogether now - "WITHDRAW".

35mpg is well below average for the Uk though? Average here is probably nearer 45-50mpg! I love the fact that americans are sitting in jeeps like that ugly one on the page with up to 5 litre engines when most highways have a speed limit of 55mph:banghead:

Well - we do have some roads that are legally 75 (hwy 101, San Miguel to King City), and 85 passing, and there are at least two tracks (Buttonwillow/Monterey)
And I got to follow an ambulance doing 120 and it was nice to feel that I could pass it!
What's the limit on the German Autobahn ( and I don't mean the little 35 mph one with tractors that goes to Spangleheim)
steverothery 03-20-2008, 12:58 PM not exactly. Its more than taking the piss driving about in a 5 litre engine on roads that are 55. At least here it's 70 on every motorway.
Just FYI, very few highways in the US are 55 any more. Most are 65 in the North East, in the South East they are often 70 or 75, and in practicality in the truly rural parts of the US, I have driven roads all day with all traffic moving north of 90MPH.

I can vouch for that - and if there is no traffic it is really easy to just let the speed build up!
On the main drag from NY to D.C. they use to say that the speed they drove and the name of the highway were the same! Get some guy with diplomatic plates and he is going to give you a run for your money!
Yeah, I once was driving through Nebraska or Montana or something. Whereever it was there was this long straight highway that I had been on for hours, and I look at this Plymouth Reliant K that I was passing, and there was this little white haired old lady driving it. I thought to myself, man she is making a good clip for a 80 something year old woman. I look at my speedo, and I'm doing 115 and the little old lady is going flat out at 105 or so. Every car on the road was doing that. I
That thing about 95 being the speed limit sign is from an old Jim Croce song. I've never seen really high speeds on that stretch of 95 myself. It is way too crowded for that.
I always set the cruse at 72, and never worry about cops.
Few places are 55mph.

One thing that has not changed here in NZ is describing the length of you know what .
6" has a certain ring to it - 152mm just doesn't sound right ......
Winfree 03-20-2008, 11:50 PM We had this one spot in Maryland where the traffic thinned enough for the New Yorkers to develop some speed - that may be what inspired the song...nothing out there but swamps and military stuff. They put an empty police car out in the median and it did slow traffic a little, but the local teens caught on and covered it with donuts...
I was a little sad when they removed it, because my old Chevy was just a little slow for the onramp...

Is that thin spot near the Aberdeen Proving grounds? I belong to a gun club about 25 miles as the crow flies from Aberdeen down on the Eastern shore. When they are working out those howitzers it comes bellowing down the peninsula. It can be louder than my garand on the range if the wind is blowing right.
I remember that cruiser in the median. I never drove past it enough to notice that it was empty, dumb ass me. The thing about the donuts is absolutely priceless! I love it.
Back when Croce wrote that song, lots of 95 was wide open. That was a hell of a long time ago. I don't begin to feel free on the highways any more until I get South of Richmond, North of Boston or West of Chicago [the West bit would be closer if the Ohio State Troopers weren't so damn tough and plentiful]. The driving world becomes a whole lot more civilised outside of the North East IMHO.

The military does use day/month/year was the point he was making. As does the civil engineering/land surveying company I work for - its the only way files (which are usually named by date first here) line up correctly in computers.
JRichter 03-21-2008, 10:11 AM Wow! 40 - yesterdays marvel is todays hi tech!
I know, right? No hybrid bs back then. Now the auto industry has to create new technology to overcome all the required safety equipment, electronic gadgets, etc. that drives the weight of cars way up to come close to these figures.

You must be up there at Haver-de-Grace! I did one of those award fellowship post docs at Aberdeen, not the proving grounds side, but the other side -
And that is about the best place to pick up speed and you don't even notice it! There are eagles on the lake there - they wanted to stop the shooting but it turned out it was the big guns that were attracting them - they would shock the fish up to the surface and the birds could catch them without effort, so the eagles were nesting there!
There is a great crab shack near there! Man, I did not think anyone even noticed that area. And it would figure that you are a shooter - do you hunt ducks?!

Nah, I prefer ducks a flappin' and deer a runnin'. I used to hunt the elusive beer can, but now I shoot slow fire pistol targets at 200 yards with a .17 caliber Ruger rifle. I suck at it now being old, weak and with poor vision. It was law school that finished me off. My eyes went to total pot during that period of my life, but before that I once shot six bull's eyes in a row at 100 yards with a short barreled .22 caliber Taurus pistol. It is still a fun pass time.
There are definitely some great crabs right round there.
Sometimes it is a dangerous place for picking up speed, but the last couple of times that I drove to DC for meetings [I usually take the train now] it was packed all the way through there, and the way back at 1/4 to 4 was bumber to bumper moving 35 the whole way. My favorite thing is to get out of the North East and just cruise. I love watching the scenery go by :) listening to the quiet hummm of the rotary engine :) .
Jethro Tull 03-26-2008, 10:24 AM Quite a bit of altitude loss going from Scotland down to Southampton. I wonder if most of the excellent mileage was during the first phase of the trip, when it was mostly net downhill?
