Jalopnik has the scoop on Hyundai's Genesis coupe just prior to the NY auto show: http://jalopnik.com/368372/2010-hyundai-genesis-coupe-revealed-unofficially
Looks like the Tiburon got a healthy heaping of G35 thrown in.
chancejat 03-16-2008, 12:11 PM front end is horrible....
robrecht 03-16-2008, 12:15 PM Ugh! Glad I didn't wait for that!
CoNsRx7 03-16-2008, 12:18 PM yea front is horrible..back looks like a g35.. got some BMW rims.. ugly!!!
velociti 03-16-2008, 12:28 PM I like the back. I bet it will grow on a lot of people. The front, however....bleh.
SayNoToPistons 03-16-2008, 02:01 PM Doesn't look all that bad. Just doesn't look complete and refined.
I'd rock it.
AdoRe 03-16-2008, 07:16 PM i think it looks very nice..kinda looks like a is250 coupe!
dancap 03-16-2008, 07:34 PM Its a mix between alot of cars.. Looks like a G35 rear, lexus from the side and curves, and the front end hmm maybe a little altima.
I'll have to admit i kind of like it, with a different bumper/grill, de-badged, in black with tint and black rims, it has potential like any car.
ShAdOwFoX 03-16-2008, 07:46 PM This is what it was before:

And this is what it is now:

The concept looked so hot. The production model ehh I'm not too pleased about. Hyundai screwed up once again.
Big_Mike_4488 03-16-2008, 08:08 PM Everything besides the front end reminds me of the new Altima coupe for some reason...

+1. A let down.
Symbioticgenius 03-17-2008, 12:00 AM That an Altima Coupe. next...
IcarusX8 03-17-2008, 12:01 AM wasn't it supposed to have a cf hood stock?
playdoh43 03-17-2008, 01:05 AM i like this a lot, id take this over a mazda 3 or civic
dynamho 03-17-2008, 02:37 AM I think the front fails. Rest is pretty good.
The problem aspect is the mandrill like nose extension and the wimpy grill.
I did a quick chop (attached) with a more aggressive grill. It's still bleh, but I think it's a bit of an improvement.
jisoo26 03-17-2008, 05:26 PM Overall I think it's pretty slick, I especially like the nice clean interior. Now if they could just shoehorn the sedan's V8 into it...hehe Hyundai's been making some great strides over the last 5 years or so.
Detrich 03-17-2008, 05:34 PM thanks for sharing. :)
it looks a bit lacking pizzaz and uniqueness, imo. not bad tho for a hyundai. they've come a long way since the excel.

+1
Hyundai gets it.
This is a cheep RWD coupe that is not a mustang. It also looks OK and has a lot of after market potential.
It does not have to look perfect, after all dodge sold many SRT4's and they looked much worse than this.
Too bad we will have to sit through the Genesis vs RX8 threads. :banghead:
TopGear8 03-17-2008, 10:06 PM That back end is very similar to the g35.
Spinning Sushi 03-17-2008, 10:14 PM The headlights on the front end makes it look chinky.
Clavius 03-17-2008, 10:23 PM Concept looked great.. this um.. looks like a Elentra had lypo and extensive plastic surgery but you can still tell it looks like crap. The guts may be awsome and overall a great deal but oi.. looks like something my mother might consider to be honest.
Spinning Sushi 03-17-2008, 10:28 PM Man, how come I envision this to be a high schooler's dream car? Now every teenager is going to be able to afford a new decently high powered rwd car and think he's "t3h dorifto king!"

Doubt it. Remember what Han said in Tokyo Drift? "What you think I'm gonna let you roll in a Hyundai?"
The Fast and the Furious is like the Ten Commandments to high schoolers and ricers alike.
"Thou shall not roll in a Hyundai!"

Spinning Sushi 03-17-2008, 11:53 PM They have a 375 and a 290 horsepower version... that's pretty impressive.
ShAdOwFoX 03-18-2008, 12:05 AM thats very impressive but now the question is: Will it be a reliable car with that much power? As in will it not break down in a year? My dad's first car was a Hyundai Elantra way back in 95 and that thing was horrible. Maybe thats why I never liked Hyundai cause of the pain my dad went through trying to maintain it. But ill agree that was then and this is now. I'm still kinda skeptical about a V8 powerplant from Hyundai. But I will admit Hyundai has come a long way from what it was 14 years ago.
Spinning Sushi 03-18-2008, 12:07 AM That's the reason why they have that 100k/10yr warranty, because their cars are unreliable. :)
chancejat 03-18-2008, 01:26 AM They have a 375 and a 290 horsepower version... that's pretty impressive.
375hp.....damn.....(surprised look )
sosonic 03-18-2008, 01:51 AM 375HP is no joke.
You just have to modify the grille and give it some external touches and it would be bad ass. With that kind of power, you focus less on the engine and more on the looks.
I like the chop job photoedit version of this car.

Spinning Sushi 03-18-2008, 01:53 AM I wonder what Hyundai's going to charge for a 375 horsepower car.
JRichter 03-18-2008, 11:46 AM Hyundai's quality isn't so bad the last several years. It's the name that's tattered...
Check the link and note where Mazda is compared to Hyundai and even Kia. LOL

Mech_head 03-18-2008, 11:04 PM The 375hp V8 is going in to the 4 door sedan.
I hear that the coupe will get a turbo 4 somewhere around 200hp and a more powerful V6 that comes in around 300hp.

Haha apparentely even Kia's are more dependable than our cars, nice...
canaryrx8 03-19-2008, 01:30 AM I dig it, I've always thought all Hyundai needs is a Tiburon type car with rwd, the ony thing killing the Tiburon is it's wrong wheel drive, and they fixed it with this one, I don't mind the front so much, I've seen way worse in lesser and more expensive cars. (*cough-Jaguar-cough*)
Design1stCode2nd 03-19-2008, 11:59 AM The V8 is for the sedan the coupe only gets a 4 and 6.
That's the reason why they have that 100k/10yr warranty, because their cars are unreliable. :)
I have a '99 Hyundai Tiburon beater car with over 100k miles that would disagree that it's unreliable. It's been the most solid car I've ever owned. In 100k miles all that's needed replacement is the battery (twice), the drive axles (boots ripped), and the exhaust manifold (cracked).
Less than $500 worth of repairs for 100k miles and nine years of service is pretty damn good.
Bester 03-19-2008, 06:33 PM I see this car as being an alternative to the 350Z. Same formula (big V6, rwd, irs, etc.) Although the price difference probably is not going to be to much (base 350Z versus loaded Genesis/Tiburon). Also give my Korean friends something to crow about :)
playdoh43 03-20-2008, 12:33 AM more of an alternate to the G37
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/19/new-york-2008-hyundai-genesis-coupe-live/
If there were ever a fail-safe formula for a press conference, Hyundai nailed it. While we're normally forced to endure lengthy tomes about an automaker's past achievements and the blatherings of egomaniacal execs, Hyundai comes out with two Genesis coupes doing burnouts, e-brake turns and powerslides, then caps it all off with enough pyrotechnics to make North Korea nervous. It was unequivocally badass, and not only does Hyundai have the recipe for a kicking press conference, they know how to cook up exactly what enthusiasts have been asking for.
Under the expert direction of a duo of bombshell drivers (one of which is Angelina Jolie's stunt driver, and both of which can be seen in the gallery), the two coupes made their way around the makeshift track in a smoky haze that was only partially caused by the copious amount of rubber put down on the faux tarmac (the rest was from the fireworks). Both models were present – the 310-hp, 3.8-liter V6 and the 223-hp (217 on swill-fuel) turbocharged 2.0-liter four. While there was a lot of talk about giving the people what they've yearned for, there was no word on price. We're guessing that the V6 will be somewhere around $25,000, while the turbo'd 2.0-liter will just crest the $20k mark.
Check out all the official info on the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe in our original post, but don't forget to peruse the high-res gallery of live action shots from the presser below and the video too!
this car is going to be pretty fast, 310hp from the v6 and 223hp from the turbo 4
jisoo26 03-20-2008, 01:16 AM $25k for a 300+ hp engine and RWD? Not too shabby...I'm going to have to take a look once this thing hits the dealerships. Watching the video, it seems that they look better in person than the official pictures. Maybe it's because I'm seeing them in motion...they look like they maneuver pretty well, turn radius is pretty tight. Looks pretty good in red too......and the hot blonde stunt drivers don't hurt either.
thecow135 03-20-2008, 01:30 AM throw a bodykit on it. god's answer to ugly cars.
faboo 03-20-2008, 01:54 AM yea..basically change the front and its an attractive car...a 220hp turbo 4 as a BASE isnt too shabby either...
they are saying about 3300 for the weight...so overall not bad for Hyundai's first romp to this side of the woods

Here's an update for you...

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii10/awedney/misc/Hyundai_Genesis_Millen_MotorAuthori.jpg?t=12182037 52
Teaming up with Rhys Millen Racing to build a SEMA show car, Hyundai will perform its part of the bargain by supplying a 2.0L turbocharged version of the car. Designed to showcase the tuning potential for the Coupe, the car will be called the ‘Art of Speed’ and will be on show in Las Vegas this November.
A custom Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) turbo kit will be fitted to increase output of the Hyundai mill. A heavy-duty HKS sequential transmission will give the car real racing credibility - a must, since the plan is to end up with a car capable of running the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Formula D drift events or the Redline Time Attack series.
“The focus will be on the engine and a radical body design to complement the factory body lines. We are going to transform the Genesis Coupe into an apex-carving machine with jaw-dropping looks. We think it has the possibility of being one of the coolest cars at the show,” said Rhys Millen, race driver and founder of RMR.
In addition to the go-fast parts, RMR will add a widebody kit, a hood scoop to get air to the intercooler and a carbon fiber wing. Enkei racing wheels wrapped in Bridgestone RE-01 tires straddle the line between speed and looks. Inside the cockpit, a Sparco steering wheel and seats offer a race-car interface while the eight-point roll cage protects the driver. A light-weight custom carbon fiber dash completes the race-car treatment.
And another one...

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii10/awedney/misc/Hyundai_Genesis_Coupe_Brembo_MotorA.jpg?t=12182039 24
Hyundai has announced that its upcoming Genesis Coupe will be available with a high-performance brake package from Brembo. For the Coupe’s front 18in wheels, Brembo engineers developed 13.4in x 1.1in (340mm x 28mm) rotors and four-piston fixed calipers. The rear wheels, meanwhile, are fitted with 13in x 0.78in (330mm x 20mm) rotors and smaller four-pot calipers.
Design1stCode2nd 08-08-2008, 10:56 AM For some reason this car just does nothing for me aesthetically.
delhi 08-08-2008, 11:17 AM All of a sudden, I don't think the Camaro is a big deal anymore... especially for a muscle car.
KoDeD 08-08-2008, 11:23 AM Tiburon knock
alfy28 08-08-2008, 11:44 AM throw a bodykit on it. god's answer to ugly cars.
unless they throw a velislide kit on it.
JRichter 08-08-2008, 11:46 AM For some reason this car just does nothing for me aesthetically.
I feel the same way and with just about any recent Korean design. I can't say the car looks bad but I wouldn't say it looks good either. Not sure if its the details or the overall shape but its just kind of blah. As much kit as this car will supposedly have it still seems boring compared to most comparable cars. I can usually get a little exited about any car of this type but not this one.
Schimmle 08-08-2008, 01:25 PM Looks nothing like the concept version of course. That at least looked nice.
kersh4w 08-09-2008, 03:29 PM the concept looked nice.
the front end of this looks like a kia rio.
delhi 08-09-2008, 06:25 PM http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=117269&d=1205738962
Family resemblance... yay or nay?
http://www.analogstereo.com/images/om/hyundai_elantra.jpg
kersh4w 08-09-2008, 08:58 PM definitely a resemblance. props for them to try to keep to their look, like bmw does across all their cars. well, like most car manufacturers. but that only works well when you have a good image going. haha.
Rhawb 08-15-2008, 04:33 PM I was sitting in my car at work a couple days ago and saw a strange looking car parked a couple spaces down. Looked at it for a while, figured it was a luxury car...finally settled on a brand new M45 redesign that I hadn't seen yet.
Turns out I was wrong - after seeing some photos today I realized it was a Genesis Sedan! They are REALLY nice looking, in fact, surprisingly so. I was expecting them to be much more "Hyundai-like," and they're absolutely not. They look quite classy.
