I've got a couple of questions. I'd appreciate it if someone can enlighten me......

1. How long does the engine take to warm up (ie temperature guage to reach normal position)

2. How steady do you take it during this time (less than 4000 revs?)

3. How thorough did you check your car when you collected it?

Last one.......
During my test drive on Monday, at low revs (2k revs, 4th @ 30mph) it sounded like the engine was labouring. Anyone noticed this?

On my test drive I trundled through a villiage at 30mph in 5th (~1800rpm) with quite a steep uphill gradient. It wouldn't have pulled away very quickly, but it was smooth and not struggling at all.

Mine is warming up within a couple of miles - but I am still cautious of thrashing anything as soon the dash indicates the temps are good, because I'm never sure exactly what it is mesuring - ie, water temp at some discrete point in the block or at the radiator inlet? Anyway, it is unlikely that the whole engine warms up uniformly, especially as the rotory will always have a cooler intake area and a single reading can't tell the whole story.

I would give it a few minutes after the temp gauge shows thaqt ir is okay.

I think you would struggle to get a lot of reaction out of any car in 4th at 2k revs at 30mpg. This car need revs, lot of them.

There is one time that I had dinner with my wife for about... 45 mintues and come back intending to warm up the engine but the water temp still up to the normal position...

It does not take long in idle to reach temperature...about 3-4 mintues...

I let it idle for 2 mintues and run normally without giving too much gas... not to stress the engine - I guess high rev is not a problem but asking for too much torque from the cool engine is cruel.

1) Warm up took about 2-3 mins in mine.
2) About 5 mins before taking about 5000 revs (keeping below 4000 is hard!)
3) Not that thoroughly to be honest. About 15 mins, about 5 of which was with the stereo. Ha ha. You have 7 days to get the money back if you find something wrong, no matter what you sign to say its ok.

AnilS - no not coming off yet, but its only a day old!

3. I hardly checked it at all just desperate to get it on the road:o
went over it with a fine tooth comb last night and Anil the fit and quality seems excellent (including those plates)

Although it only takes about 2 or 3 minutes for my AT's guage to come up to its normal operating temp, I wait about 5 minutes before gunning it.

When the manual addresses "moving the vehicle short distances" it says to run it at least 5 minutes before shutting it down to avoid the "flooding" problem. I'm assuming the engine might need somewhere close to the 5 minutes to fully dissipate its fluids properly.

I've read that its normal for some small amounts of oil to be injected into the rotors and that may have something to do with the 5 minutes also.

That's my 2cents (or pence for those across the pond).

Many thanks gents for the feedback. The sill plates did concern me, as I have 2 young kids that are bound to make life hard on them. was also very interested in the aluminium sills but they may well replace the originals if they become too worn.

Having said that still waiting for my car.:( :( :( :( :(

Does sound a pain though having to wait 5 minutes every time one moves the car a few feet to avoid flooding. Does Mazda confirm this action?

Real, I think you have already forgotten about the TT - pulls well from 2.5k....

Looks like a quality issue with the sills (or the chrom insert in them). Well if they cant stop it happening, they'll just have to upgrade them to the accessory ones wont they? ;-)

That 5 mins wait to avoid flooding will be a pain as my drive to work is only 5 mins,

After driving for 5 mins it will be fine. The whole flooding thing is only about starting it up from cold and immediately shutting it off. It either has to idling for 5 mintes, or be driven for about 2-3.

Thats a pain in the arse for me as I often have to move my car in the company car park to let someone else out but at most the engine is running for 30 secs. The boss will think that I keep taking it for a spin if I have to wait 5 mins each time!

Just explain to him, you can let it idle for 5 minutes or go for a spin for 3. Then return your car to a spot that blocks in the next person who'll want to leave.
