View Full Version : Mazdaspeed Shortshifter
thebiggdaddy 03-11-2008, 02:55 AM I know most of the members on this board usually recommend the Axial Flow Short shifter. However, I was wondering if anyone bought the short shifter by Mazdaspeed. I do recall that Cortc (the black 8 with the HRE's and Mazdaspeed Bodykit) had this short shifter, but he is no longer on this forum. The reason why I'm interested in the Mazdaspeed is because it has a higher percentage in reduction of throws, and more importantly, it is about $100 cheaper. If anyone has experience with this shifter and can give us your input, that would great.
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 03-11-2008, 03:19 AM um, where did you find it for 100 cheaper??? and % of throw is maybe slightly more but actual quality and performance would be nowhere near the AFE.
TheWulf 03-11-2008, 06:27 PM Yes do tell... I've been wanting a short shifter :)
AlisterMcRae 03-21-2008, 10:49 PM I have the mazdaspeed short throw and it is great. Not sure about the AFE, I am sure it is a great product but my service manager at the dealer and some of the techs love it. I do not know why they did not make it standard. It also makes the gears very identifiable. There is absolutely no vague feeling in the gears whatsoever
nordichunter 03-31-2008, 08:12 AM where can i find a mazdaspeed short shifter? all i can find is a dang shift knob
monkiboi69 04-28-2008, 09:58 PM www.japanparts.com is where you can find one. i got it from them. honestly, i used to have an AFE SS and it's better and shorter than the mazdaspeed one. i got mazdaspeed because i didn't want the AFE SS to be the blame for a bad transmission if it ever fails.
kersh4w 04-28-2008, 11:00 PM i cant find it. link?
AJ's Shinka 04-28-2008, 11:13 PM http://www.japanparts.com/db/partslist.php?dealer=6&car=93&middle=1&small=5
It's $442.90 without shipping costs versus AFE SS is $259.00 and is here in in the states.
MS SS= 20% shorter throws versus AFE SS 29% shorter throws...you do the math.
Didn't you just sell your AFE SS?
Jedi54 04-28-2008, 11:18 PM AFE shifter > MS Short shifter
Spinning Sushi 04-28-2008, 11:19 PM I'm waiting for someone with an AT to come in and say "Paddle shifters are faster than any short shifter out there."

My understanding is that the MazdaSpeed parts void that part of the warranty just as quickly as the AFE did.

Not too sure. But if a dealer chose between 2 cars with a tranny failure (one with Mazdaspeed parts - backed by Mazda and one with AFE - not backed by Mazda, the dealer would choose to repair the one with parts backed up by Mazda under warranty. The Mazdaspeed shifter itself has limited warranty and wouldn't be replaced if the shifter failed. I guess it depends on the dealer if they blame what part or if anything caused the failure. Main point is that one is looked more down upon the other because it's either backed by Mazda or not.
Another example: all Mazdaspeed RX8's that are out there - all Mazdaspeed parts; I don't think they will sell that car without warranty.
DeViLbOi 04-29-2008, 12:23 PM While I see your logic...in the end they don't have to warranty a tranny problem that might have possibly been caused by the shifter.
There is no Mazdaspeed RX8 yet. All of them are parted together with Mazdaspeed parts but aren't available that way from Mazda. So yes...they have in effect no warranty in issues that could be related to Mazdaspeed parts.

Sure. I'll give it a shot.
1. Your facts are completely wrong.
2. The MS STS has longer throws than the AFE STS.
3. The MS STS costs a lot more than the AFE STS
4. The AFE STS was designed/modeled after the MS STS, but with a shorter throw.
In conclusion, the MS version gives you less gain, costs almost twice as much and most of the people who bought the MS version ended up offloading them to get the AFE version.

There are Mazdaspeed RX8s sold by Mazda, just not in the US.

It's true, in Japan they had a limited edition RX-8 that had the mazdaspeed parts installed on it from the factory. But calling it a "mazdaspeed" vehicle when it makes the same power as the standard rx-8 is disingenuous. People expect more, and you end up with a body kit and a stiffer ride instead.
Razz1 04-30-2008, 12:47 AM Why don't you tell that to Nissan with their Nismo I mean Notmo

this is true but again not, the mazdaspeed version in japan has an upgraded pcm, longer final gear ration, does have the suspension and body kit parts and other stuff i cant think of right on top of my head. but i'm in between afe and mazdaspeed one at the moment, even with the ms sponsorship, afe is still cheaper.. so i dont know, ill do more reserach
Jedi54 04-30-2008, 01:54 AM just buy the AFE, you'll love it
Sargeant_002 04-30-2008, 11:47 AM just buy the AFE, you'll love it
After the read, I'm leaning towards this one.
Where do we source/buy these? Anyone have a part number?

syntheticdarkness 05-09-2010, 10:19 PM Here is probably a stupid question, buuuuuuuuut working on a 3 rotor this weekend I was informed I had a short shifter which I thought that's how it was supposed to be since it was already in the car lol. I need to know if it is a mazdaspeed or af. The base is a cream color that I assume is mazdaspeed from what I've found over the net, where af is black, but not sure. Can anyone help confirm this please.
laythor 05-09-2010, 10:27 PM sounds like the first gen AFE
syntheticdarkness 05-11-2010, 05:02 PM Was there a reason for changing it? Is there a way to tell what one you have?
SPHINX144 05-12-2010, 12:31 AM my car came with an optional short throw shifter from factory, is that the mazdaspeed one?
lzhmax 05-12-2010, 04:08 AM i like the factory one's looks...
