View Full Version : What was ur 1st car & how does it compare?
theOUTSIDER316 03-06-2008, 10:54 AM I'm pretty sure this may have been asked b4 but please 4give the "New Guy" 4 asking it again?!:) Mine was a '87 Accord which died a year after I got it:icon_no2: ....no sweat I jst told my self that the prev. owner didn't care 4 it so I went on 2 a 1 time dream car in my life which was a '91 Prelude. Got it from a Honda dealership and all was great......till about a 1 1/2 years later when it died:cussing: , of course I had jst passed my warranty coverage so Honda wouldn't do anything 4 me, which is why 4 the last 5 years, going on eternity I will always hate Hondas:Kill2: ! Now I'm not careless when it comes 2 cars, I always maintained them properly but a crappy car is jst that! And that's when I became a Mazda family member:lol: . First Mazda was a Protoge5, my favorite Mazda WAS (but kinda still is) the RX-7, now it's my beautiful '8, so far NOTHING compares!!:worship:
nycgps 03-06-2008, 11:03 AM My first car, technically is my rx-8.
B4 that I used to drive my father's 95 Quest GXE (sold for 1.5K last year, not bad after 12 yrs of service :))
I cant compare a Mini Van to Sports car ...
Rems31 03-06-2008, 11:10 AM I think it's either not gonna compare (cuz their first car was a POS) or their first car is the 8...
TheWulf 03-06-2008, 11:26 AM My first car was a 97 Saturn SL1. The piece of sh!t was costing me the same in repairs monthly as my payments on the 8. It was getting so ridiculous (ie: the brake lines were deteriorating from the inside into the brake fluid) that I just got rid of it.
Went to an 05 Sunfire coupe after that. Nice upgrade for dirt cheap. It's my winter car now :)
Got the 8 in August last year and it blow both of them away by far. I don't see how it couldn't!
zeru57 03-06-2008, 11:34 AM My first car was a 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo. Purple with tinted windows. I parted with it at 150,000 miles (wish I hadn't), and it made it to ca 175,000miles before getting absolutely destroyed in an accident.
I loved that car. It looked amazing. Especially priceless was my girlfriend's reaction to it the first time she saw it: "That's not your car!" Apparently a knowledge of New Criticism theory (we met in English class) and a car that hot were previously incompatible in her world view. :)
Sadly, I can't yet compare it to the RX8.
JRichter 03-06-2008, 11:42 AM First car was an maroon '86 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport (Euro-sport my ass:lol: ) wagon. This is a predecessor to the Lumina that came out in '90. The car was passed to me from my parents when I got my license. It was a third car of theirs that I hoped that the whole time I was approaching driving age, it would be sold or dead so I wouldn't have to drive it. No chance. I didn't drive it long before I bought a VW Sedan (real Eurosport?) but now I see the lesson they were trying to teach me by not just buying a new or newer car for a 16 year old who drives everything like he stole it all the time.
Best features: Could fit 12 friends in there (and did) and the shaft-style Kenwood tape deck that was usually belting out Megadeath - Symphony of Destruction (hot music at the time) to compensate for the uncool "wagon" bodystyle.
Comparison? uhh.... No. :)

ATL-GP 03-06-2008, 11:42 AM OMG....a Pinto looking 77 Mustang II. OMG WHAT A PIECE!! I think I'd rather have my 8...thank you very much!!!
pussywillow1972 03-06-2008, 11:45 AM 1985 RX-7 GSL bought with 192,000 miles on it. Ran like a champ to the day I got rid of it with over 230k. Problem was the rest of the car was falling apart at that point...
Some other RX-7s and some Jeeps later and I'm now in the RX-8, with a Jeep as backup.
reaper1 03-06-2008, 11:46 AM Where have I seen this kind of a post , before ?
stormyblu8 03-06-2008, 11:53 AM First car: 69 Opel Kadet L station wagon (got it from my mom).
NO comparison!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Uncivilizedracer 03-06-2008, 12:14 PM My first car was a 1983 POS Honda Accord money green 4 door 300$ but had a banging system in it lol ohh the memories
NotAPreppie 03-06-2008, 12:15 PM First car: 1988 Ford Aerostar
There's really no comparison; a minivan based on the Ford Ranger from last century versus a bespoked sports car from this century.
Phayen 03-06-2008, 12:38 PM My first car was a '97 Nissan Sentra. By that time it was already 7 years old though. It was the bottom of the line, no fancy anything. Manual everything. But the engine ran really well and it was fun to drive. Then I upgraded to a 1995 Ford SHO. Really fun car. A little heavier, but more enjoyable overall. Then there was the 8. Its not even a fair comparison anymore. My 8 just got scratched, all up the drivers side when someone was backing next to me. So much more painful when the 8 gets beat up rather than the other cars.
04RX8man 03-06-2008, 01:18 PM First Car '98 Mitsubishi eclipse painted black with a green pearl, dropped 2" , full exhause AEM ECU, AEM Intake, carbon fiber tails, carbon fiber headlights, green led's under the dash and green led's under the body. Def a very fun car to drive becuase whether I hammered on it or not always got at least 25mpg but the 8 is def more fun to play with...
Socket7 03-06-2008, 01:59 PM I had a 93 honda accord, with a car PC and good stereo system.
The only way it compares is that after driving the 8 the thing felt like a deathtrap. The stereo was a lot better then the Bose in the 8 too, but not for long *evil laughter*
The Drunk IT Guy 03-06-2008, 02:35 PM 1989 Mazda B2600i 4x4
It was this little bitty pickup with no AC, which made it quite awful driving it during the summertime. The truck never got me laid, but it was fun to take mudding and it got me off the schoolbus. I couldn't ask for more at 16.
It looked a lot like this, but white with factory wheels.

RotaryP7 03-06-2008, 02:39 PM This is my first car.
shazbot28 03-06-2008, 02:46 PM My first car was a ballin' ivory '88 Cadillac Sedan De Ville...
Like this but ivory and matching color for the top too.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=116537&stc=1&d=1204836033
Then I had the "Air Chariot" '93 Pontiac Transport:
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=116538&stc=1&d=1204836301
But I got those as hand-me-down cars. First "owned-and-bought" car is my rx8
kpex76 03-06-2008, 02:47 PM My very first car was an 87' mazda Rx-7 with 85k miles that I bought for $3700 at the time when I was 18 years old(this was back in 1994). Back then, I didn't know **** about rotary engines, I bought the car because it was reasonably cheap and not a bad looking car and had a blast driving the car although it had some major problems.
The car stopped running after 2 years and sold it to a local mechanic. The repair bill was more than I could afford. A few weeks later, my brother offered to help me put some money towards a new car so the Rx-7 was sold. Now that I think of it, I am pretty sure the apex seals was the problem.
It was fun while I had the car though.
The Drunk IT Guy 03-06-2008, 02:57 PM shazbot28
When I was a kid I loved those vans. The sloped front end with the gigantic windshield really appealed to me. And that's the best looking 80's caddy I've ever seen. Normally those are rusted, have no hubcaps, and are parked on peoples lawns in the ghetto.
Maelick21 03-06-2008, 03:12 PM My first car was an old, barely running 1990 Mazda pickup. The thing had more problems than you could imagine, but it got me from school and back. Eventually I moved up and my parents gave me their old 1994 Honda Accord. I had that until an unfortunate pizza delivering accident involving one of the worst winters we've had out here in a long time, some ice and a steep hill with a drop off... (in a parking lot at that, lol)
After that got totaled I went out and bought a 2002 Civic SI. Wasn't a huge fan of it but it was a Honda, and I was being pressured into buying it due to time / parents. Plus I got a killer deal on it. Paid that off, waited a year or two, went in and traded it in and picked up my shiny '05 8 just last month!
:D:
huzer21 03-06-2008, 03:20 PM 1972 Chevy C10 2wd long bed. As far as memories go, it's got the RX-8 beat hands down so far. As far as performance, well, that's another story.
elysium19 03-06-2008, 03:24 PM 1992 Infiniti Q45 - and seriously, those of you who know Japanese cars from that era, know this was one of the finest luxury cars nissan has ever made. This was from the days before large german sedans had hundreds of HP, and was one of the first cars to be both luxurious and fast. The newer Q45's are technically better cars, but the first gen was just a revolutionary thing for it's time.
80 MPH in second gear! Beautifully torque-y V8, expensive as hell to maintain but who cares. You'd never know you were in a 4300 pound car. Driving in that car seriously just made you want to drive clear across the country, it was just that comfortable and inviting. I made dozens of trips between NY and MD in that car, and each one was a blast.
The first car that I drove was a 1982 Toyota Tercel with a four on the floor and optional pinstripe. It was also yellow with a black interior, coupe, and it had a 1.4 liter engine. The similarities pretty much end there, however, I did have my one great street racing success with the Toyota.
yale02 03-06-2008, 03:36 PM 1st car - 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Grey with burgundy red leather inside and complete with fake wood outside.
DaBatMan 03-06-2008, 03:42 PM 85 Toyota Tercel... Wagon
Mods (8" bass cannon between the seats... another in the wagon and custom installed radio shack head unit. 18" stock wheels:uhh:ok they were like 14's but i kept them clean:lol: )
now that's pimp. however... i wouldn't trade my 8 for the world. best car i've ever owned
Decat 03-06-2008, 03:44 PM 1st car was a 1984 Porsche 944 (white) transmission went out within a year sold after fixing it
1st car- 2004 Mazda RX-8
Now that I think about it, it is almost the same as the car I drive now....
Almost...
Does a bike count? I rode a kawa 636 , how does it compare? Well you cant compare bikes with cars , its like comparing apples and oranges....but the rx8 is much more comfortable :)
jahman11 03-06-2008, 05:20 PM Mazda 626 1982
with a volvo bumper on the front LOL
CyberPitz 03-06-2008, 06:34 PM http://sleary.com/images/car.jpg
Add rust, missing paint all over, broken mirrors, shattered reflectors, dents all over, and a transmission that would slam into first gear from 3rd at 40 when braking....then that's my car...what do you expect for $500, a bottle of lube under the seat when I bought it, and a car you can superman over high ramps time after time?
This car is millions of times leaps and bounds ahead.
ultradave 03-06-2008, 07:37 PM Hmmm, judging by the responses I might be a little bit older than many of the posters.
My first car was a hand me down from my Dad - '67 Saab 96. 3-cylinder, 2 cycle. With studded snow tires on the front it was unstoppable in the snow. It was a pretty fun car to drive - if a little wierd, odd, whatever else you want to call it.
Dave
ROTARY_Eddy 03-06-2008, 07:52 PM My first car was a 1990 Mercury Topaz... ahhh the memories of "the Topaz" rocked a couple cars in between and then got my 04' Nordic Green beauty :D
dothackRAVE 03-06-2008, 08:07 PM 1998 Nissan Sentra, AT. Used to belong to a General Manager whom my dad fired, so it was just sitting around the house. Parents gave it to me for use.

Old Perodua Kancil, 4SPD MT. The car where I learned manual. It was also the car with which I earned my license.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4d/Perodua_Kancil_(first_generation,_second_facelift) _(front),_Serdang.jpg/800px-Perodua_Kancil_(first_generation,_second_facelift) _(front),_Serdang.jpg
Now:

How do they compare?
The Perodua was nothing more than four wheels and a small tiny engine. Front wheel drive, atrocious handling, shitty clutch, shitty shifter (it was talllllll~), worthless interior, and most of all, notorious safety ratings (like, none. If you crashed this thing, you are almost guaranteed to die). I like small hatchbacks, but only when they have some sense of agility to them. This one was small but drove like a bus.
The Sentra was also worthless as a driver's car. It was remotely comfy...., until we sent it for service at some shady shop and it came back with race grade suspension (as in, stiff as hell). Interior was worth shit, it was boring to drive, and it's acceleration was a joke. Only good thing was..., well, it moved.
These were cars designed for people who had done their breeding, and are now just waiting to die. Boring, white appliance cars.
VS RX-8? I think you guys know the story.
Eelfinn_Ty 03-06-2008, 08:19 PM My first car was an 83 chrysler new yorker. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/83-88_Chrysler_New_Yorker.jpg) It was pretty lame but it would talk. It would say, "the door is ajar." and a few other things. I paid $50 for it so I didn't complain.
After that I had a red 91 ford escort gt (http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/MediaNav/articleId=49542/firstNav=Gallery/photoId=8018) It had a 4 cylinder mazda engine which was pretty fun. The transmission finally started having some serious problems last month when I drove 1hr to vote for Ron Paul. I made it back and had an excuse to buy an 8!
I finally got a red 04 rx8 last sunday. I've only had it for 4 days but its been awesome. :jump: I haven't been able to have too much fun in it since I don't have tags yet. Neither of my previous cars even come close to the 8.
geaves 03-06-2008, 08:30 PM Okay, I'm old, 53, but my first car was a 1947 Oldsmobile convertible straight 8 hydromatic.
My dad bought it back in 1960, totally refurbished it and then handed it down to me when I was 16.
From straight 8 to RX-8, never thought of that before!
Gary Eaves
snipaz2420 03-06-2008, 08:46 PM first car was a 04 mazda rx8 auto and my second car is a 06 mazda rx8 manual:)

Dave You're not alone. My first car was a used tan '69 Saab 96 with the 4-stroke V4 engine. I like good, odd, unpopular cars.
The 8 is faster.
1994 Volvo 940 sedan. It's parked outside right now; I had a minor mishap when I tried to jump it which led to my decision to get the RX-8. Anyway, in its current state the 940 has 170k miles on it. The ABS computer is fried, the SRS sensor is gone, and only one of the speakers works. With that said, it has a powered driver's seat and a sunroof while my '07 RX-8 (my second car) does not. :(
Need to list that 940 on CraigsList, actually. I need to get it off my insurance and I could probably get a grand for it.
Easy_E1 03-06-2008, 09:18 PM 1972 Renault R15. How can it even begin to compare.
theOUTSIDER316 03-06-2008, 09:30 PM Reading all ur posts started making me nostalgic:rolleyes: ......I started remembering things about my previous cars that didn't even enter my mind when I posted the question earlier!! Guess I was 2 caught up in my '8:smoker: ! But 4 the most part, even though I had a lot of great memories, (and sum sh!tty) I wouldn't give my '8 up 4 anything!!:score:
And 2 those who thought they were a lil' old............who cares......age is nothing but a #.....besides, u're only as old as u feel in ur heart! And judging by how much fun we all have stated that we have with our '8's.......I'd say we all feel between 18-25 in our hearts right now!!:lol2:
BigRed 03-06-2008, 09:52 PM After reading everyone's response (I didn't actually), I think it's safe to say that my first car is really easy to compare to my 8.
endowdly 03-06-2008, 09:53 PM well my 8 is my first. i've driven a lot of cars, accords, legacies, wrx's, bmw m3, '72 mustang mach i, '06 mustang gt, vans, pathfinders, land rovers, jeeps, and one of my fav's hmmwv's (army).
but after driving all of that, i love the 8 the most. i can throw this thing around and it fits my driving personality to a t. i'm gonna take care of this little car and be sure when i make the next big buck i upgrade to a '09. i think i'm sold on the rotary for life.
OSducky 03-06-2008, 11:32 PM I had a 1992 Chevy Corsica with 3 spoke wheels and tinted windows, I loved that car back then, Then it got in an accident and now the Corsica is just a memory
DCVroom 03-07-2008, 01:13 AM My first car was a 1968 Chevy Pickup.
This '08 GT trumps it...barely.
ocrapitzleon 03-07-2008, 01:24 AM first car, when i got my license, the rx8
comparing to my new car.
i love both
completely different feeling.
the e92 wins in many ways
and yet the 8 wins on ways the e92 cant even begin to compare
Sea Ray 03-07-2008, 09:15 AM 1974 Malibu Classic, 2 door.
V-8, cragar mags.
8-track tape player.
CB radio.
Huge front bench seat that you could do you know what on :)
Spazzychaz 03-07-2008, 09:34 AM My first car was a 1989 Lincoln Town Car.
Hey sea ray, i just got rid of a 1974 Chevelle Malibu Classic.
Alano 03-07-2008, 11:27 AM My first car was a 2000 Audi S4, auto =X. Had it for about a year until I got bored of auto, was going to get it again in manual, but they gave me too many problems. German parts = $$$$$$. Was a real easy car to mod though, 400$ would get you 60hp. Awd. Twin turbo. God I miss that car.
ken-x8 03-07-2008, 04:18 PM My first car was a 1958 Alfa Romeo Guilietta Spider. Bought in 1965, pretty worn out when I got it. Kind of a money sink, but really great and classy when it was running. Had it for about 3 years before it wore out completely.
Always wanted another roadster. But when second childhood hit a couple of years ago, the 8 called out to me more than anything else.
Ken
Subdivisions 03-07-2008, 05:24 PM My first car was a 1971 Plymouth Satellite.
(No, I'm not that old, it was 16 years old when I got it)
Fairly big car
318 engine.
Would absolutely smoke the tires.
Straight line car only!
At that time same time, I also (rarely) got to drive my fathers '72 Plymouth Baracuda. (Note: Dad was a MOPAR Fan)
Didn't have seat belts, had racing harnesses that folded up above the doors.
Now THAT was a fast car!
Again straight line only, but better than the Satellite.
Moved on to various Cutlass, accords, etc.
Biggest difference between my first car and the 8 ...
Handling!
Without a doubt.
It's hard to beat the 8's handling, in any price point!
Although, a freak coincidence between the 8 and my dad's Baracuda ...
They both got about the MPG!
Just kidding ... the 8 is worse ;)
GameGuy369 03-07-2008, 05:37 PM 1998 Chrysler Cirrus LXi in a granny green color. BOOYAH!
Then I went to buy a Mazda6. I accidentially test drove this beautiful Galaxy Gray RX-8, and took that puppy home :)
colin204 03-07-2008, 05:39 PM 1st Car 1968 Camaro
krush7 03-07-2008, 08:50 PM not my 1st car, but my other car is a WRX. i miss the torque, but the rx-8 is a lot of fun to drive stock.
ScottyStyles 03-08-2008, 02:28 AM My first car was a 1977 Datsun Pickup that was practically rusting out, and could do 0-60 in about 30 seconds. That was a straight-line car only... corners were scary. I think it also had a smaller engine than the RX-8 does...
musclecarconvrt 03-08-2008, 03:32 AM 1966 Malibu w/ 289 and 2 speed powerglide trans.
Comparison?
1966 Malibu = 4000 lbs, V8, auto with only 2 gears!, manual drum brakes, manual steering, bench seats. Great car as long as you never need to stop or turn. Perfect for parking ;)
2004 RX8 = 3000 lbs, Rotary, 6 speed MT, power antilock brakes (what a concept!), electric power assist steering (Whoa!), bucket seats with center console running the length of the cabin. Great car for driving :)
ztbear13 03-08-2008, 06:58 PM My first car was an 02 saturn SC2 which really wasnt bad at all for a starter car.. I've had a few different cars since then but love the 8 and will be keeping it for a while...
RMZ290 03-08-2008, 09:32 PM 1999 S10 Xtreme fleet side with a 2.2 4 cyl and auto trans.
still got it, now the winter vehicle and dirt bike mover. Great little truck. Although it does not have a handling feel nearly as well as a RX8 I've never had it even feel like the front was going to run out of grip. It actually feels like it has far better road holding than the 8. Hopefully within the next couple months I'll pick up a newer pickup and the s10 will become my project vehicle. Maybe a rotary or 2jz swap?

1) An S10 feeling grippier than an RX-8? You need some AutoCross time.
2) Rotary swap? I think you'll become famous for it..., mainly because of Mazda's history with rotary trucks (REPU). tl;dr: THAT'LL BE AWESOME.

Maybe its the the 9.5" wide tires on the s10, no idea, or the crappy kumho summers on my 8.
There actually was a mitsu mighty max pickup around here with a turbo 13b in it, saw it for sale a couple months back. Talk about sleeper.
daisuke 03-09-2008, 10:59 AM ford ranger xt... one of the worst vehicles I've ever driven, couldn't handle or accelerate for shit and would go into a fishtail by itself on dirt roads at 40mph if there wasn't a load in the bed...
98 Chevy S-10 with crew cab and step sides and the 4.3 vortec V6... one of my favorite trucks of all time, fast, fun and handled like a champ on dirt roads to the point where I could do tailslides. all that with no load in back. It did go thru a lot of maintenance tho.
95 saturn SL2... still have it but it's a complete crock now at 270k miles. Burns a quart of oil every gas tank, has idle issues and the clutch is on the way out... but it's never ever left me stranded on the side of the road and I've only put about a grand into it over the years as far as repairs go.
Would I ever buy any of them again?
The ranger? HELL NO, I hate those trucks
The S-10? In a heartbeat, as long as it was in good shape.
The saturn? probably if I needed a beater, tho I'm aware that mine is the exception to the norm as far as longevity for those cars goes, I'd rather have a subaru really.
Do any of them compare? I think the S-10 sort of does in a roundabout way, it has that same stupid bump on the passenger side floor, fast, fun and practical like the 8.... obviously no comparison but I think it's fair... and good looking to boot
jp4wd 03-10-2008, 11:14 AM My very first car was a 1985 ford escort. i got it at a government auction when i was 17 (1988). It was 3 yrs old with 85k miles. owned it for 6 months (i think).
It did the job of hauling me and my friends from school to wherever else we needed to go. It had a 4 speed manual trans. and the automatic seatbelts that just drove me nuts. It burst into flames one day while driving home from school. Fortunately, my friends and i didnt get hurt. Was an electrical short in the engine bay and just spread from there.
quantum 03-11-2008, 09:17 AM I bought a 1968 Dodge Polara 2 door hardtop when I was 17 (1978). I could get like 6 of my friends into that car comfortably. Eventually had it painted and pinstriped, got Cragars, etc.
I'm way past that now. :)
miker1 03-11-2008, 10:46 AM :Eyecrazy: my first car was a 1937 chevy with a bent frame, the mazda is a little bit better
Tim Tim Tim 03-11-2008, 10:54 AM my first was a 99 mustang gt. really its a toss up, the rx8 handles alot better but the mustang sure did have a shitload of torque which made it alot of fun. Id put them at about the same level eventhough there 2 completely different types of car.
Arky8 03-11-2008, 11:06 AM My fist car was a 1982 Ford Exp 3 speed Auto. Was fun to drive till I crashed into a curb in the snow, never drove the same after that. Last I saw it was in 1987, on a flat bed truck headed to the salvage yard...:sadwavey: Looked alot like the car below except it was dark blue with silver stripes.
