How do they match it up to the stock key? I thought the stock key had some sort of chip it to start the engine? Hmm...

Thanks Chaseme... I too wonder how it works with the stock key and the chip inside. Anyone know? I wouldn't want to purchase one and just have for decoration, I want it to work.

I remember something further back that these keys weren't compatable w/US market 8's. But if they are, the dealership should just have to program it to work w/your vehicle. Would be pricey though. Someone jhsut replaced one of their keys, and it wasn't pretyy. (I think it was Mikeb that replaced his spare, not sure though)

I emailed JT-Imports to see what they say about programming the key. If it can be done, sign me up!!

its only 45 to program if you have your key and the spare.

I've gotten word from Jason at JT-Imports that this key does indeed have the chip for the ignition. I'm gonna order up the key and be the guinea pig to see if it works for us in the US. I'll keep everyone updated....

So where would be the best place to take one of these keys to get cut? I would probably take it to a locksmith just so its done right, I wouldn't want to trust it to the girl at the key cut stand in the mall.....

I'm going to the dealer to "ASK" if they can cut the key. If they give me a line, then off to a locksmith I go...

The dealer will spend about 3 minutes reprogramming your ECU/Cluster to work with the new key.

Make sure you bring you other keys that you still want to work in the car.

The key is cool but expensive. Seems like I remember seeing how to set the key for the system in that tech highlights CD that was posted a while back. I will look for my copy and see what it says. As I remember it was that you put in your key and started the car then turned it off and within a minute put in the new key and start the car. I may be wrong but it wasn't harder than that. I can't see paying the dealer to setup the key unless they had to hook up to the car.

I'm going to do whatever it takes to make this key work since it is big bucks. Any info is greatly appreciated...

Speaking of keys....Does anyone have a picture of the keyless entry fob? I haven't seen anything about that, and of course the 3 times i've gone to test-drive an 8 I haven't thought to ask to see one. :P

any new news on the key? My dealer isnt sure they can cut and/or program it so they suggested I get the key anyway and they will try to see what they can do.

Does the deluxe key have remote entry built in? I want to get a key like the Mini-Cooper. BMW has a transmitter in the key and it's not much bigger than the stock 8 key alone. Anyone have leads?

The key arrived at JFK airport last night in NY. NY to NH should either be a 1 day or 2 day hope (not including clearing from customs). I'm hoping to see it before the holiday next week. I'll keep everyone posted as to my results and will post up some close-up shots of the key and holder..

Have you seen the VW Bug Key? May dad bought a new Beetle a couple of years ago. The Turbo Diesel, a nice little car actually but i digress.

The key does this fold up and flip thing like Mercedes does. You press a little button and the key unfolds itself from the side for use. All you carry around is a little square. And the alarm and trunk release etc is built in.

Not that i am complaining. I don't have an RX8 yet, but when i do, i don't care if i have to get out and turn a crank on the front bumper or sacrifice a small woodland creature to get the thing to start. As long as it starts, i will be grinning ear to ear.

Hey How come I have a different leather case - Mine is like a jewellry box! Can take that anywhere = no way I am putting the naked key in my pocket with other keys scratching it - may be I just buy a few more to use

Unfortunately the remote fob will not fit inside the casing with or without the foam removed. Seems on the back of the case there is a cut-out (possibly for the J-spec remote fob), but it won't if US-spec remotes :( I am hoping I can get the key programmed and working with my 8 :)

To all: I am heading down to the dealer tomorrow to see if they can program my J-Spec key. I'm crossing my fingers...

Well I have some news... I went down to the dealer today and found out they don't have the software to cut ANY RX-8 keys!! The parts guy even called another local dealer and they don't have the software either. I mentioned how well this looks if I "needed" a key cut and the guy agree's 100%. Anyways, they will be having the software installed to cut 8 keys in a few days. The parts guy will call me when they are ready.

Sorry guys... I wanted to know if everything would work today too, sucks to have to wait a few more days....:(

Buy what? The J-Spec key? Already have one, I just need it cut and programmed from the dealer...

So they key is just a key right, its not like a bmw key? Bmw keys has the remote and the key stuck together, so its just one key (used the word key 6 times in 2 sentenses woohoo).

The key is just shown.... I just don't have that nice case but a jewellary box type with renesis logo on top... a bit cheap and not portable...

That bring me a question:

When you have an extra key where do you get an extra remote (for the keyless entry)??? :confused:

Hi all:

I just got back from the dealer and had the key cut for nothing and the dealer "attempted" to program the key twice and it didn't work. It would have cost $80 to have it programmed, but with my Miata Club discount it only cost me a mere $60.00. So short and sweet, the J-spec key does not work with US-Spec 8's. :( If I am feeling lucky, I "might" try takahashi method of programming the key but don't want to be stranded or pay another $60 to get the keys reprogrmmed...

let me get this right... they charged you $60 for work they didn't do?

It took them 1.5hrs to try to program the key..twice... So I wouldn't say they didn't do anything...

I guess; maybe it's my Type A pesonality. If they warned you up front it might not work, then it's your responsibility. If they said "No problem, we can do that" its a different matter. I guess for $60 at least you satisfied inquiring minds. I know a lot of people were wondering if it would work; now we know. ;-)

Nope! :( It was a costly experiment to say the least. $60 for the key and then another $60 to program it. So I'm basically out $120 but have a cool Xmas tree ornament according to my fiancée :p

PS At least I have a nice key to open the driver's door and trunk :(

my10ae - Sorry to hear that it didn't work. Has anyone else had any luck?

I work for a Ford dealer and here is a thought. I would guess that this car sharing some major components with Ford Motor Co. vehicles would possibly carry the same PATS (passive anti-theft system) components. If this is true and at this point you have nothing to lose, you could program this key the same way you program Ford keys if you have both original keys. This method is different than what the method the tech will use (ie hooking a WDS or NGS computer up to the key and letting it program the key)


Here are the steps.

1. Using both original keys turn the car on with each one but don't start the ignition.

2. With your JDM key do the same thing, this must be done last after using the first 2 keys. This step will tell the PATS system that you are the original owner after recognizing the 2 keys and allow the system to accept up to 2 additional keys or codes.

3. Start the vehicle with all 3 keys using the originals 1st.

Hopefully this method will work. I will look a little further into this when I get to work on Monday.

Thanks for the info Showoff, but what happens if this does not work? I've heard if you program the keys wrong, it will leave your car inoperative. I'm not about to chance it and risk another trip to the dealer (possibly this time towed in). I've already sunk over $120.00 into this project. If someone else wants to take a shot at it, be my guest.

The 2 original keys will still work if you use my method, assuming that the PATS system is the same. I read another thread on this subject and the guy gave the EXACT same instructions, he also claimed that they were out of the MAZDA shop manual.
