View Full Version : Anybody ever sold a 90K and up mileage 8?
Ktreece777 02-07-2008, 01:21 PM I am about to sell my 2004 6MT with 95,000 miles on it... Anybody know what I am about to get raped? Was hoping someone out there has... I am looking for a good price to set it at... Would I be crazy to ask 15,000? Keep in mind my area isn't too populated with 8s... checked KBB but don't like to go by them
mike73737 02-07-2008, 01:26 PM That's gotta be high. There is one for sale near me for $13.5k with 60k miles and it's fully loaded with nav at a dealer. I probably wouldn't pay more than $12k private party for an 8 with 90k miles.
Ktreece777 02-07-2008, 01:31 PM Like I was saying, you are located in an area of lots of cars... I am in Arkansas where the roads are plagued with Tahoes and huge trucks... there are maybe 14 rx8s in my area of 140,000 people
mike73737 02-07-2008, 01:42 PM So you're thinking there is some huge unmet demand then? If people were clamoring for RX8's I'm sure Mazda would oblige them. I'm not saying I'm right about the price, but just because there are fewer of them doesn't necessarily mean you can charge a higher price.
Jdh0526 02-07-2008, 01:48 PM ^^ mike do you have a link to the dealer selling that RX8 for 13500, Ive been looking for a good priced 04 and I could drive out that way.... thanks
chrism 02-07-2008, 02:21 PM when i tried trading my car in i was offered 10,500 for an 04 GT 6MT in perfect condition with 28k miles....best offer i got was 12,500 on a trade in......for 95k i would say your lucky if you can get 6-8k in my opinion

I found it on www.carsoup.com in the Minneapolis area. I don't remember the dealer, just search for it.
Renesis07 02-07-2008, 02:39 PM 10,995 is a good starting price for a private seller
ZoomZoomH 02-07-2008, 02:54 PM i think you should just keep driving that thing until the floorboard falls out lol
killerfish 02-07-2008, 03:12 PM i think you should just keep driving that thing until the floorboard falls out lol
+1 - Definitely!
And here I only have ~18K on my 04 MT! : )
ZoomZoomH 02-07-2008, 03:26 PM the only way any of our high mileage 8's gonna retain ANY value is if we keep driving it til it rolls over the ONE MEEELLLIIIOOON miles mark lol
c41250n 02-07-2008, 04:22 PM that is why im never thinking of selling my car!

Yes and everyone likes to negotiate, so expect to give a discount.
Sorry, RX8's jstu don't hold value well, and not to mention that kind of mileage on any car ruins value. Combine them and look out.

Exactly. You will not get anywhere near 15k for that car. Be prepared for a lot of disappointment when it comes to offers. Hate to say it but that's the way it is. Keep the car unless you just can't stand it anymore and have to get rid of it.
magikone69 02-07-2008, 08:27 PM im at 73k now... at this point i think the 8 is going to be a lifetime investment lol i already planned to keep for another 3-4 years...by that point the car will be worth nothing so ill keep it as a project car whenever i get my next ride (new cts-v hopefully) so the 8 will probably see a new engine and will be my weekend fun car.
as far as selling your car id say 15k is pushing it, no matter where u live its still an rx8 with close to 100k, and u might not see alot of 8's in your area because there probably isnt much interest for it, the cars are out there, people just might not want them. plus its not like people are rushing to get into the 8 anyway when there are tons of popular alternatives (Z, evo, wrx...)
jones75254 02-07-2008, 08:36 PM The 8 IS a lifer type car. Unless you put down a big chunk at signing (even then u MAY break even) you WILL lose $ on it come time to sell or trade in, no ifs, ands, buts about it.
I plan on driving mine until it croaks...and then i will restore it cosmetically, drop in whatever new age rotary that is out at that time (16x perhaps?) And drive it until I croak. A fitting end.
ManicMechanic 02-07-2008, 08:44 PM I hate to agree, but I bought my "04 8 six months ago for $17,900, with 54k on it. They were going for $20,000 with mialages ranging from 30k to 70k on them. After I made the deal I found them with under 25k for the same price. I sought out my "dream" car and when I saw the quick depericiation, I decided to keep it forever, instead of trading it for a newer one. Good luck in your sale!! Hold out and bide your time, you might find another sucher, like me!!
ManicMechanic 02-07-2008, 08:53 PM By the way, when my rotary engine blows up, I might fit something different into my 8. Probally an LT1, LS6, or whatever the Corvette is running several years from now when it goes!!!
mmats69 02-07-2008, 09:34 PM I really hate that the car depreciates so quickly. It really is a nice car and I got lots of compliments on mine. Top Gear had the car on their program (again) not too long ago and the depreciation was one of their lows on the car.
Razz1 02-07-2008, 10:15 PM There's a buyer for every car. Put it in the auto trader. Start at 14,800 and move her down every two weeks.

Not a bad idea

If it's a touring model, retail is only $11.3-13.7k. If I wanted another rx8 I think 13k would be fair. With 95k the car is still just as much fun as a new one. I'll keep miine until it dies or I die.
RMZ290 02-08-2008, 12:23 PM I got my 04 for $16000 with 17000 miles 6 speed with sport package 7 months ago.

Yes, that's a very fair price considering that car with that mileage can retail up to $17k ++. That is a good buy.:)
CosmosMpower 02-08-2008, 02:13 PM I think you'll be lucky to get 10-12. I got out of mine a year and half after I bought it new and only lost 2K, it had about 17K miles on it.
Revvittupp 02-08-2008, 04:41 PM Not a bad idea
Unless he wants to sell it before the '09's come out. Start at $12,800 and move it down $200 every other week....
yellowjacket523 02-08-2008, 04:57 PM I got my 04 for $16000 with 17000 miles 6 speed with sport package 7 months ago.
That sounds like a hell of a deal to me. Did you get it from a dealer or private seller?? I just got my 04 with 32,000 miles on it and paid $17,000. That was just for the car though... after throwing in tax, tags, titling, registration, $1,800 extended warranty, and total loss protection it came out to $20,000! Did I get ripped off?
Oh, and I also plan on driving the thing til it falls apart. I don't have much choice unless I want to get rid of it owing thousands more than I can sell it for.
mmats69 02-08-2008, 06:37 PM I sold mine for 16k less than a month ago. had 36k on the clock. i also consider the sale to be an incredible stroke of luck
ManicMechanic 02-08-2008, 07:53 PM Het RMZ290, You got a good deal on your ride because it is yellow!!
yellowjacket523 02-08-2008, 08:35 PM Het RMZ290, You got a good deal on your ride because it is yellow!!
What's that suppose to mean. Yellow is bad ass!
Revvittupp 02-08-2008, 10:00 PM What's that suppose to mean. Yellow is bad ass!
Supply and demand. You should always pay less for used yellow cars, expect less in a sale... etc. Odd colored cars lose value faster. Black, Silver, Grey, White, Blue, Red... all of those colors are near the top for most cars, but different colors have different orders, especially the last three there and any others not mentioned.
SHOWOFF 02-08-2008, 10:04 PM I'm a finance director of a car dealership and I'll tell you that the biggest issue with asking more than about $9,500 to $10,000 for your car is that most banks won't loan money on a car that is over 80,000 miles and that it's going to be difficult to sell that car as a dealer or individual if you are only limiting yourself to cash buyers.
Ask yourself this question as well, would you want to buy a 96000 mile car? Especially one as finicky as the RX8 is?
Ross_Dawg 02-08-2008, 10:09 PM i want to buy an rx8 but will not buy one with above 40,000 miles, and im sure others are like me... not many people will want to buy a 100k rx8 unless they project it in which case they will ask for a low price
RMZ290 02-08-2008, 10:42 PM Het RMZ290, You got a good deal on your ride because it is yellow!!
Pretty much.
Bought it from a Nissan dealer who took a $500 loss on it, I saw the auction receipt. I think they had started asking $20000 when they first got it. They had gotten three other 8's through the auctions and had them all sell within two weeks of putting them out for sale. They said the 8's were easier to sell than the used Z's. I think the total came out to be like $17,800+/-a couple hundred with the taxes, plates, etc and 4 year extended warranty.
They sold mine twice, but the people could not get financing. I think it ended up sitting on the lot for like 5 months, and they figured it was the color.
Bought it in October, just as winter was starting to hit and they were getting ready to run it back through the auction. Car is in pretty much perfect shape too, they even put a new set of tires on it.
Maybe its the area and season, but the 8's around here go dirt cheap. A lot of car for that amount of money. Its my first big credit purchase, so I had to have one of my parents cosign, but I should have it payed off within a year of the purchase. There were a lot of the base 8's around without the xenons and dsc for another 1 or 2 thousand less, but I wanted these features so I chose this car.
I wanted black, because I've always had black vehicles, I can deal with the yellow for the price, its also kind of nice because its so bright is always looks clean.
daisuke 02-08-2008, 11:22 PM there was an rx-8 for sale here in town with over 100k miles on it, it was going for 14 and I do believe someone bought it even with those miles, I test drove it and it ran pretty well, but it was too expensive.
No way you can sell something with those miles for more than $11k
Shadow12one 02-09-2008, 12:27 AM I wouldnt touch any car with 90K miles on it. You buy the thing and soon after you're repairing something. I'm lookin to buy a used WB 8 but with no more than 20K miles on it.
Skitzerz 02-09-2008, 12:34 AM It would be a miracle to get 9 for that in a trade in.
Privately, maybe to some young punk that didn't know better, 11 maybe 12...
And thats a big maybe.
yellowjacket523 02-09-2008, 02:50 AM So did I get screwed on mine? It's pretty base, 32k miles sport package with maybe a couple options. I honestly thought it was a decent deal at the time. It came out to 18,000 total for the car, taxes, tags, registration, and titling, which I didn't think was too bad.
Then another $1,800 or so for the extended 4 year 48,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, plus whatever the total loss protection cost. Came out to almost exactly $20,000 even for everything.
I probably overpaid but the upside is that my investment is pretty well protected. Warranty is good til around 80k miles, I could owe 10 grand on it and total it when it's worth 5 grand and only pay a $300 deductable, and really good liability/collision insurance coverage for $150 a month.
That last paragraph was probably more just me trying to justify the stupid decision I made, but I love the car so screw it.
mmats69 02-09-2008, 04:39 AM ^I think you came out pretty good on the deal. I had just a few more miles (36k) and sold for 16k. Check the sig for details.

If you are happy with the car and it is running great, you did just fine. No matter what ANY 8 owner will end up losing money on the 8 in the end, so what does an extra 2k matter when your planning on keeping the car for a long time? Out the door mine was 19k (04 with 32k miles) with the extended warranty bought in Octobr 06. I paid a bit more than most but i wanted this color (green) and not many around plus i am very happy with how well it is running. Is all relative.

You did alright. You paid a little over retail which is common when buying from a dealer. You got a nice car for the $ along with dealer support as a buying customer.
alz0rz 02-09-2008, 12:28 PM Remember also that the 10-12k range that you could sell it for would also heavily depend on the options/condition of the car. People who buy at 90k miles are looking for something reliable and cheap or a project car. As someone else said.. 90k miles on a car as finicky as the rx8 = :spank: .
al ;)

It probably doesn't help that I bought it in fairfax county va which is one of the more expensive areas.
The kelly blue book for that car in my area said $20,000 retail, $16,790 private seller.

Is there a membership fee? What kind of stuff do you do? And most importantly, any girls in the club? ;)
I've actualy been trying to find a way to meet new people so I might check it out.
kersh4w 02-09-2008, 07:40 PM $26/year.
meets every month. first tuesday of the month. although to date, i have not been to one. always something coming up, school or girls.
there are tech sessions every now and again. mazda reps come and talk every now and again. and most importantly, they organize highspeed performance driving events. which, for a ~$400 or so isnt that bad, not for 2 days of fun. :D if its your first time to an HPDE, the amount you learn is ridiculous.
