View Full Version : Few custom appearance mods w. pics, and half a#@ DIY's
shakeyourbrakes 02-06-2008, 04:40 PM Hey just wanted to let people check out some new things I worked on. I already had the evo-r shift cover in carbon and side covers in carbon, so I layed thin real carbon fiber over the rest of the console. You can get this stuff off ebay..its very thin but its real carbon fiber pre mounted with 3M backing. I cut it with really sharp heavy scissors, which let me get the curves cutout (total time about 1 hr) Cost about 35 dollars

Put in a led bar for the 3rd brake light, which really had to be done to complete the look of the back i think. Picked up a 6 inch white LED bar online, which fits PERFECTLY into the housing without any modifications. Just dabbed glue on the ends and wired it up to the factory wiring. Cost 8 bucks

Finally got my 4" tips welded on. Picked them up off ebay, theyre the 2.25 inlet 4 inch outlet, slanted cut tips made by Vertex i think. Kind of dark though. Cost 65 shipped, then 70 welded on.

perks11 02-06-2008, 05:27 PM looks nice, i tried the whole carbon fiber on the center console things and it turned out horrible. then again im not that patient. looks nice
TopGear8 02-06-2008, 05:33 PM Looks good...Too bad it's auto :(
NgoRX8 02-06-2008, 05:44 PM very flashy...
i think it's a lil too much, but if you like it, i suggest going all the way back on the center console to keep it even.
heyarnold69 02-06-2008, 05:53 PM lovign the led idea~
shakeyourbrakes 02-06-2008, 05:58 PM ya the led strip literally takes 10 minutes. When your driving at night with your lights on, the led's stay dimly lit all the time which looks pretty good.

that would annoy the hell out of me if i was driving behind someone with that.

I liked the idea until you said THAT! No thanks on a malfunctioning 3rd brake light.
I just ordered the full dash kit in real Cf for mine. Thanks for posting pics of the center console side covers. I think I will pic them up too. Looks good. I like it "flashy"!

REV_ME_62 02-06-2008, 07:07 PM Can you show a pic or two underneath you exhaust set up and a sound clip? Thanks!
shakeyourbrakes 02-06-2008, 07:50 PM the tips dont change the sound..all the shop did was cut off the old ones and reattach the ones I bought so it looks about the same underneath.
As far as the LED strip, its not malfunctioning... it just stays VERY VERY dimly lit, barely noticable at all from behind, but just enough to give it a slight glow. Believe me, it doesnt look like your braking at all, it just gives the oval a tiny glow and looks great I think. I dont know, may just be the LED strip I bought...havnt bothered to change it though.
zerobio 02-06-2008, 09:26 PM Personally, I don't go for the carbon fibre look. And the LED sounded good at first.
fd3s777 02-06-2008, 09:46 PM You did a great job on the center console. Most people cannot make it looks as good as it is.

post pics when u put the whole kit on please, im curious
yeah real carbon is kinda tough to work with. I agree with NGO though, you gotta carry it on through out the rest of the center console all the way back.
Remember to ensure the weave pattern is the same direction as the first set you layed down.
snipaz2420 02-07-2008, 12:01 AM shake i tried to return your pm but your inbox was full. but basically im going to keep the vents as i was able to get them installed.
TRAVASS 02-07-2008, 06:02 PM post pics when u put the whole kit on please, im curious
fo sho look for a new thread soon.
How bout pics of it "dimly lit". Im still curiously interested.
I so wish the pieces that cover the silver went all the way to the back too. Seems silly that they don't but I keep scratchin the silver on accident more and more, so I plan on getting the covers any how, just wish they were longer. (That's what she said)
SayNoToPistons 02-07-2008, 06:15 PM Looks a little busy but not ricey though. Is the surface of the carbon fiber sheets rough? Is the surface coated or bare CF?
shakeyourbrakes 02-08-2008, 01:08 AM nope coated carbon fiber with clear gloss..cant tell the difference between if it is thick or not. I was very impressed actually, only problem is that it doesnt really curve over surfaces more than a little..i tried it on the ashtray and rest of the side silver part and it just wont curve that great. Might need to get a thinner piece. Ill get pics of the led strip up, the dimly lit thing i was reffering to is really DIMLY lit..you can barely see it at all.
Noble Wolf 02-08-2008, 06:24 AM I think it looks great, but you should add CF to the rest of the console. I have done the CF thing to my interior and I like it very much. There are some pictures in this thread: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=128170&page=2&highlight=carbon+pod
