Contrary to its rather negative reputation in the West, the Pig of Chinese Astrology may be the most generous and honorable Sign of the Zodiac. Pigs are nice to a fault and possess impeccable manners and taste. They have so much of the perfectionist in them that others may be inclined to perceive them as snobs, but this is a misconception. Pigs are simply possessed of a truly luxurious nature, one that delights in finery and riches (in surroundings, food, lovemaking and otherwise). This Sign believes in the best qualities of mankind and certainly doesn't consider itself to be superior. Pigs also care a great deal about friends and family and work hard to keep everyone in their life happy. Helping others is a true pleasure for the Pig, who feels best when everyone else is smiling.

A Pig with no one around to appreciate its giving nature is a sad sight. Pigs are so magnanimous they can appear almost saintly; this can lead some less-than-well-intentioned souls to stomp all over this Sign, and the bad news is, the Pig will take the blows! Pigs make great companions in part because of their refusal to see the more negative or base qualities in a partner, but that rose-colored view can lead to this Sign's allowing itself to be taken advantage of. Contrary to their seemingly benign dispositions, however, Pigs can be quite venomous in response to being crossed by a lover, friend or business partner.

Pigs are highly intelligent creatures, forever studying, playing and probing in their quest for greater knowledge. They can be misinterpreted as being lazy, however, due to their love of reveling in the good stuff; this Sign could happily spend hours on end making love, napping, taking a long bubble bath or dallying over an incredible spread of rich foods. Pigs tend to make wonderful life partners due to their hearts of gold and their love of family. Even so, Pigs can be rather exclusive, choosing to spend time with those who will appreciate them most and ignore the rest of the populace. Pigs would do well to realize that there's more to life than being needed. When they open up their world to a diverse group of people, they will truly bloom.

AHAHA.. oh. the old do's and don'ts..

Good luck

* Opening windows and/or doors is considered to bring in the good luck of the new year.
* Switching on the lights for the night is considered good luck to 'scare away' ghosts and spirits of misfortune that may compromise the luck and fortune of the new year.
* Sweets are eaten to ensure the consumer a "sweet" year.
* It is important to have the house completely clean from top to bottom before New Year's Day for good luck in the coming year. (however, as explained below, cleaning the house after New Year's Day is frowned upon)
* Some believe that what happens on the first day of the new year reflects the rest of the year to come. Asians will often gamble at the beginning of the year, hoping to get luck and prosperity.
* Wearing a new pair of slippers that is bought before the new year, because it means to step on the people who gossip about you.
* The night before the new year, bathe yourself in pomelo leaves and some say that you will be healthy for the rest of the new year.

Bad luck

* Buying a pair of shoes is considered bad luck amongst some Chinese. The word "shoes" is a homophone for the word for "rough" in Cantonese, or "evil" in Mandarin.
* Buying a pair of pants is considered bad luck. The word "pants"(kù) is a homophone for the word for "bitter"(kŭ) in Cantonese. (Although some perceive it to be positive, as the word 'pants'(fu) in Cantonese is also a homophone for the word for "wealth".)
* Washing your hair is also considered to be washing away one's own luck (although modern hygienic concerns take precedence over this tradition)
* Sweeping the floor is usually forbidden on the first day, as it will sweep away the good fortune and luck for the new year.
* Talking about death is inappropriate for the first few days of Chinese New Year, as it is considered inauspicious as well.
* Buying books is bad luck because the word for "book" is a homonym to the word "lose".
* Avoid clothes in black and white, as black is a symbol of bad luck, and white is a traditional funeral colour.

THE DEBATE:
Many confuse their Chinese birth-year with their Gregorian (american) birth-year. As the Chinese New Year starts in late January to mid February, the Chinese year dates from 1 January until that day in the new Gregorian year remain unchanged from the previous Gregorian year.
For example, the 1989 year of the snake began on 6 February 1989. The year 1990 is considered by some people to be the year of the horse. However, the 1989 year of the snake officially ended on 26 January 1990. This means that anyone born from January 1 to January 25, 1990 was actually born in the year of the snake rather than the year of the horse.

Red packets
(Cantonese: lai shi or lai see) (Mandarin: 'hóng bao' )
are passed out during the Chinese New Year's celebrations, from married couples or the elderly to unmarried juniors. It is common for adults to give red packets to children.
Red envelopes always contain money, usually varying from a couple of dollars to several hundred. The amount of money in the red packets should be of even numbers, as odd numbers are associated with cash given during funerals. Since the number 4 is considered bad luck, because the word for four is a homophone for death, money in the red envelopes never adds up to $4. However, the number 8 is considered lucky (for its homophone for "wealth"), and $8 is commonly found in the red envelopes. Sometimes chocolate coins are found in the red packets.

Firecracker
The lighting of firecrackers also signifies a joyous occasion and has become an integral aspect of Chinese New Year celebrations. Once ignited, the firecracker lets out a loud popping noise and as they are usually strung together by the hundreds, the firecrackers are known for its deafening explosions that it is thought to scare away evil spirits.

Firecracker ban
The use of firecrackers, although a traditional part of celebration, has over the years witnessed many unfortunate outcomes. There have been incidents every year of users of fireworks being injured, especially during festive seasons. Hence, governments and authorities eventually enacted laws completely banning the use of firecrackers privately, primarily because of safety issues.

Introduction
Superstitions

Introduction

The Chinese strongly believe that numbers affect a person's luck and fortune, and it is important to choose the right number. For example, 4 is a number that sounds similar to 'die' in Chinese and is greatly avoided. 58 which sounds like won't prosper in Cantonese are also dismissed. On the other hand, numbers that are usually associated with the number 8, which represents prosperity, are greatly welcomed by the Chinese. For example 84, which sounds like prosperous till death in Cantonese, or 18 which sounds like definitely prosper in Cantonese.

In addition, numbers 3, 6 and 9 are also good numbers when put together with the number 8 with other numbers, can aid in the person's chances of winning in gambling. For example, 1388 which sounds like prosperity in one's lifetime in Cantonese and 168 which sounds like prosper all the way in Cantonese are numbers that the Chinese belief are lucky and good.

Sometimes, Chinese gamblers perform rituals to wish for luck and prosperity from gods when they are gambling. They include offering fruits, offering joss sticks or simply just praying for luck.

Superstitions

Interested to know some ways to increase your fortune while gambling? Well, some of the Chinese superstitions concerning gambling are as follow:

1. Wear red underwear when gambling.
2. If you are on a losing streak, go to the washroom and relieve yourself. It can bring good luck.
3. Females are more likely to win when they are having their period.
4. Switch on all the lights at home before going out to gamble.
5. Checking into hotel rooms with propitious numbers like 8, 18, 13, 168, 198, and 798 may bring good fortune too.
6. The winning lottery numbers are actually present in the world around you waiting to be interpreted. E.g. the number on your car plate could be the numbers.

There are also inauspicious things to do while gambling according to the Chinese. Here are some of them:

1. Never mention anything about books while gambling. “Books”, in Chinese, sounds similar to lose (“shu”).
2. Do not count the money you gain or lose while gambling.
3. Visiting religious places or religious leaders
4. Touching of shoulders
5. Try not to have sexual intimacy before gambling
6. Try not to enter a casino by its entrance
7. Staying in hotel rooms with inauspicious door numbers

Over the last 3000 years many things/ideals/symbols have changed. And I am sure the translations loses a bit too.

Yet for some reason we went on a cleaning spree recently, had VERY specific foods for dinner, red envelopes are flyin, and I needed a new pair of shoes.
