View Full Version : Valentine's Day is coming...
flip702 02-02-2008, 05:22 PM Mmmkay fellas, its almost that time -- Valentine's Day ''08. Just wanted to get some ideas on something fresh to do. I gotta think of something extra special since it's also our wedding anniversary (<-- save the sarcasm, we we're young and in love  ...and still are! well, a little older--11 years ago). Don't really wanna spend $$$ on jewelry (she's not into too much bling)... i dunno. What's some of your ideas? We're actually gonna go see WICKED in LA (I'm in Vegas) but was wondering what would be a good gift to get her, or anyone in LA recommend a place to go for dinner? Argh!
...ladies feel free to chime in as well ;)

Diamonds are a girls Best friend... I know of an excellent online company if interested...They also have a store in New York city. Bought my 2.10ct Diamond earrings from them. :) Excellent quality.
Take her to the casino and let her play whatever she wants... ;)
JB_Rotary 02-03-2008, 12:26 PM Happy Singles Awareness Day!
lol SAD
o wait I'm in that group :sweatdrop:
:tear:
Jethro Tull 02-03-2008, 03:54 PM A local pizzeria is offering a large, heart-shaped pizza "special" for Valentine's Day.
Tell her you love her- give her the pepperoni!
Pink Flea 02-03-2008, 09:46 PM If you where sticking around LV you could take her to see The Beatles Cirque du Soleil "LOVE" show at the Mirage!!! That would be the BEST present EVER!! At least to me, LOL.
DOMINION 02-03-2008, 10:44 PM you work for a hotel chain?
IHG :)
IcarusX8 02-03-2008, 10:49 PM DAMN YOU FLIP!! your avatar made me look like an idiot, good thing no one was around...
Apostle 02-04-2008, 09:49 AM What i would like to do, and what i could afford to do are two dif things.
My girl is getting a card, thats about it...
but, if you need some suggestions:
Hot air ballon ride, with a picnic for lunch (since in vegas will be slightly warm)
redo your wedding vows then take her to a nice hotel for a bit of pampering
fly out to martha's vinyard for a lunch date
hough2696 02-04-2008, 09:56 AM Ummm....chocolate.....
I don't celebrate these kinds of things.....but chocolate always makes me happy...and most chicks for that matter.
Apostle 02-04-2008, 10:21 AM btw, we're going to the state fair this weekend, that's our VD gift to each other, along with the card.
but she's buying her own food (yes i'm cheap, and i wont spend $5 for one small piece of steak on stick). see about getting a funnel cake in the shape of a heart, or at least a lung
hough2696 02-04-2008, 10:27 AM ^ howz about the shape of a clogged artery.....get it...the funnel cake.....grease=clogged artery.....alright I guess it was a stretch......................I still laughed at myself.

Just because you cant handle that which is the funnel cake, do not try to spread your vegitarian outlooks and views on those of us wish to partake in all that is holy about fried dough :)
just noticed if: hough is phonetic for hue, why is dough not phonetic for due?
unless of course hough is hoe, then that would make sense.....
j/k, lots o lov Rach :)
Pink Flea 02-04-2008, 11:50 AM I would think funnel cake is veggie friendly... I wonder though if it is vegan friendly... Cause it is sooo yummy.
Pink Flea 02-04-2008, 11:52 AM My BF said take her to a lakers game.... This is why you should ask the GIRLS here what to do for her.
Edit: Then he said, take her to be on the price is right.....:banghead:
Oh boy, cant wait to see what I'm getting for Valentine's!!:uhh:

CTrx8 02-04-2008, 11:57 AM i'm trying to figure things out here too. my wife of 5+ years caught me quite by surprise because she had always told me in the 3+ years dating and then our marriage that she didn't really want jewelry or bags or anything like that.
well, in celebrating our 5 year not too long ago i came to find out she really does like getting jewelry and/or a handbag. i got her a diamond and sapphire necklace for our 5 year and is the only reason she finally let the cat out of the bag that all these years she really did want the jewelry. so now i'm up a creek without a Coach bag. hmmm.....
Jethro Tull 02-04-2008, 12:14 PM well, in celebrating our 5 year not too long ago i came to find out she really does like getting jewelry....
I could have told you she was lying right away. The ALL like jewelry. If they don't, it means they've taken a blow to the head.
When we first started dating, I started giving Mrs. Tull gold charms for Valentine's Day. Sometimes as a little something extra on birthdays and Christmas as well- a stocking stuffer. But it's become a tradition now, our next anniversary will be our 21st and she has quite a collection of gold charms in her jewelry box. It's turned into a family heirloom of sorts and our daughter will inherit the whole shebang one day, when Mrs. Tull and I have departed this mortal coil.
After a few years it becomes a challenge to find something unique & not cheap. Every so often, give her a new gold bracelet or neck chain as well. Earings are in this same category. Valentine's is a "Hallmark holiday", but you still can't ignore it or you could find yourself sleeping on the couch.
Good luck!
Apostle 02-04-2008, 12:16 PM Hough= Rough & Tough....nice try....want to fight about it?!
Nuthin but luv for ya too
rough and tough.... hough = huff?
that stuffs not good for you.....
hough2696 02-04-2008, 12:17 PM Maybe thats why I am the way that I am.......
Socket7 02-04-2008, 12:25 PM If I had to do something for valentines day I'd go with a picnic lunch up in the Marin headlands and a road trip up CA route 1. Surprise her with a nice piece of jewelry too.
Provided it isn't, you know, raining.
hough2696 02-04-2008, 12:28 PM I do know, that I do not like to get flowers......I would however not turn down a flowering plant or shrub that can be planted and enjoyed for quite some time. But thats just me.
VolcomStoneX 02-04-2008, 12:29 PM ^^ why cant women just make up their minds..lol
j/k love ya rach
hough2696 02-04-2008, 12:30 PM I don't like for a plant to die for no purpose......I'm weird though, I guess

pfffftt
ungrateful woman!! if he gives you flowers you better accept them and give him lots-o-lov for the thought.
better be happy if he even remembers vday!
women now adays think it is a responsibility to provide gifts.
if it was me, i'd tell you it's just another day and go make me a sammich!!!
take your shoes off and get back in the kitchen where you belong woman.
hough2696 02-04-2008, 12:34 PM ^hey....I don't even celebrate these things....take it back.....

Not by choice, believe me. if i could buy my girl everything she wanted, i would. but have two kids that demand most of my money, and even though i love my girl (can still get pissed and love at the same time, so dont get cocky), kids come first.
VolcomStoneX 02-04-2008, 12:45 PM i was joking!!!!

i thought you were gonna say a little funny made up story
doh, sorry.
in that case...
because - i'm part jew?
because - when i was a little kid, cupids arrow struck my dog in the eye and blinded him?
because - vday is just the social economic downfall of the western civilization that only benefits florists and candy makers?
because - diamonds, although a girls best friend, is an enemy to the mans wallet
because - diamonds, that may shut her up for a bit, but she'll be gabbin away again when your done hehe
because - the giving of diamonds on this day only denies the true oppression of the conflict that is happening in Africa and the slavery conditions that the workers are put through to acquire said diamonds
VolcomStoneX 02-04-2008, 01:17 PM ^^ LOL
and rachel that is not funny
when i was like 8 i got chased by a dog for 1 hr i wouldnt move from where i was standing on some peoples porch crying my little eyes out
hough2696 02-04-2008, 01:22 PM I laughed at the kitty comment.....
VolcomStoneX 02-04-2008, 01:27 PM fair enough, hows the workload today
hough2696 02-04-2008, 01:28 PM Not good my friend....I'm in major denial....though I've worked up enough comp-time for a 4-day weekend of the 16th!
Jethro Tull 02-04-2008, 02:07 PM because - i'm part jew?
No such thing as "part Jew". You're either in, or you're out. Ask the rabbi. Can't use that one anymore.
hough2696 02-04-2008, 02:09 PM ^sounds like Fight Club

and that was me either being thick or maybe just hoping. as much as she kept saying no and talking about how she didn't want those type of things i believed it but it was all LIES! :) if she hadn't said anything or just the occasional, "oh you shouldn't have" i would like to think i would have picked up on it but the specific direction not to get those type of things because they aren't really something she likes made me think just that.
And I'm a firm believer in, If you don't tell me what you want...you won't get it. I'm not a damn mind reader.
+1. :) and even more, if you tell me not to then i won't.
Smokin_LaLa 02-04-2008, 04:14 PM VD? doesnt that stand for venerial disease? sorry dude i am single
flip702 02-04-2008, 04:16 PM  +1 for not being a mind reader... pfft, when i want something i let it be known...
lone_wolf025 02-04-2008, 05:56 PM Wow...I hate coming into these threads late...all the good stuff is already said.
I personally never have liked V-day as its just another excuse for commercialization. I too believe in the not being a mind reader part, but I can't stand it when anyone says one thing and means another. It pisses me off to no end, especially when I get chewed out because I'm not a mind reader...
But I digress...do something special on V-day, but make sure its an equal gesture. Its all well and good to give a one-sided gift on a b-day, but otherwise both should give something, because its only fair that way...
Jedi54 02-04-2008, 06:26 PM GF and I don't 'really' celebrate Hallmark holidays such as Valentines Day.
I'll probably pick up some chocolate covered strawberries, a bottle of wine, and we'll watch a scary movie at my place.
This should be about spending quality time with each other, not about how much stuff we can buy each other. :)
disclaimer: I did not read everyone's posts.
shaunv74 02-04-2008, 06:26 PM Okay. Philosophical discussions aside we're all on the couch Thursday night next week if we don't come up with something good.:)

Any thoughts on a nice unique gift? Other than the usual?
shaunv74 02-04-2008, 06:30 PM Jedi: I like the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries idea.

unfortunately my gf of 3 1/2 years broke up with me (and broke my heart) 3 weeks ago. looks like it will be S.A.D. for me. :/
i'll have to keep champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in mind though. thats a good idea.
a few valentines days ago i found a rose dipped (and thus forever preserved) in 24k gold. that even got my mom jealous of her. man did that win me brownie points.
Apostle 02-05-2008, 12:03 PM ^ two ways to look at this situation:
1) what a whore she is to break up with you, probably over something insignificant. stupid b!tch!!!
2) sweet, now i dont have to spend my hard earned money buying some lame a$$ gift.
My recommendation, find a new girl and do her on vday. hang out in the same spots you did with your ex, in case she shows up.

Whys cant it be about the guy?

Maybe i want flowers and chocolates. or a teddy bear, maybe a gift basket.

work with leather? make her a belt with her name on it (that was for the rednecks)

It is. If the guy gives a good present, he gets good sex.
What about my needs and my wants?
All guys need is food/sex. He gets food if he takes her out to dinner. Then he gets sex.
Maybe i want flowers and chocolates. or a teddy bear, maybe a gift basket.
Maybe. If you do, there is probably another male partner involved.

Far less than 1% of diamonds on the market now are "conflict diamonds." It's a dead issue. Let's just say it's because you're paying thousands of dollars for artificial price inflation on a rock.

hough2696 02-07-2008, 10:01 AM Such are the stipulations.....and so shall it be.

RX8Jenn 02-08-2008, 10:05 PM I've decided that V-Day should be a week long holiday. Period. Early gifts are the bestest. :D:
Pink Flea 02-08-2008, 10:11 PM Very true, I was gone for one day and already had a Hello Kitty present waitng for me when I got home.. Then I got the lens... Wonder what I get tomorrow?!!!
Skitzerz 02-08-2008, 10:30 PM Very true, I was gone for one day and already had a Hello Kitty present waitng for me when I got home.. Then I got the lens... Wonder what I get tomorrow?!!!
Laid?
My fiance' is really pushing to get tattoos this year. I kind of like the idea. I've been sorting around some of my drawings and I wanna get started on a sleeve I've been refining. Or just get the cross on my back that Ive been in limbo about. Can't decide...
Anywho, I'm taking her out to dinner (golden triangle, VERY nice restaurant over Pitts skyline), then go out to the point for a while and just talk. Then the usual, got a friend to prep some crap at our place, candles, flowers, the whole deal. Let her relax. She could use it.
RX8Jenn 02-08-2008, 10:35 PM Nothing says "I love you" like a package of sour gummy worms. Take note.
shaunv74 02-08-2008, 11:09 PM Very true, I was gone for one day and already had a Hello Kitty present waitng for me when I got home.. Then I got the lens... Wonder what I get tomorrow?!!!

Apostle 02-10-2008, 10:17 AM Pink,

THe best gift you can give (for any occasion) doesnt cost a dime. When he gets home, walk up to him, tell him to be quiet and then do him a favor ;)
This will please him more then any gift, rx7, cologne, you name it.
and you would be amazed at what he will do in turn. Need a deck built? Need the grass cut, etc...
Have a great Vday :)
Pink Flea 02-10-2008, 12:42 PM Ehhh, Id rather just buy him something.. LOL

Greenblurr93 02-11-2008, 07:59 AM Shoot, I'd take anything at this point.... Im single... I may actually try the bar trick..

fitz75 02-11-2008, 08:14 AM I asked for the Spiderman set in blue ray... somehow I think I'm too late by the reaction received :icon_no2:
Apostle 02-11-2008, 09:11 AM She got you a copy of "The Notebook".
sorry bro
shaunv74 02-11-2008, 10:52 AM Alrighty. I think I've got my plan together.
-I've got the jammies and the "intimate apparel"
-I've got the chocolate oriented dinner menu set:
-Goat cheese and cocoa nib spread on baguette
-Spinach salad and cocoa nib vinagrette
-Skirt steak with chocolate marinade
-Flourless Chocolate Orbit cake
-I was thinking Red Wine but maybe I'll switch to champagne and rasberries. Thoughts?
I'm also thinking I take her out for a drink after dinner if she wants to go out. She came home last night from shopping and said "I picked up something I can wear for valentines day." Which I hope means for my eyes only but if she's thinking to wear out I'm screwed. :uhh:

Wow, impressive Shaun! I'd go with champage and raspberries, but you know Jen better than me :) .
As far as attire, what is the norm in your household? VD was our favorite holiday, and attire was "indoors" only :eyetwitch
sharkman 02-11-2008, 02:03 PM I get nothing....she gets a dinner at medieval times :)
Apostle 02-11-2008, 02:10 PM ^ i wanna go :(

Thanks Linda. I think I go with the Champagne then. Although Impressive will be actually it off so the cake isn't too hot and the steak cold by then time I get done with all the cooking...:)
As far as the norm goes I suppose if I knew what that was life would be boring right.:lol2:

Enough champagne up front and she won't care about cold steak and hot cake
Good point, "norm" isn't a good thing here!
Pink Flea 02-11-2008, 05:02 PM You wanna know what Im doing for my guy for V-day... Last night I told him I didnt want to see him anymore, he was a tool I was done with him.. I am still babysitting his dog while he is in LA on business though, and Im going to do a B&W pic of his dog and frame it for him.. We can still be friends.
Rootski 02-11-2008, 05:08 PM My lady is flying in and we're going to Keystone. And then I'm going to the poor house.
Apostle 02-11-2008, 07:13 PM wow, kinda messed up Pink. did you find out why he was being a tool? maybe something was going on. recommend you just give back the dog and make a clean break. very rarely will guys "just be friends" with someone they have dated. and then it is only after a long period. unless of course if you were only dating him less then a couple months, then its all good.
Rems31 02-12-2008, 10:22 AM Im celebrating vday one day later...got tickets to the show We Will Rock You (it's like Mamma Mia but with Queen's songs instead of Abba's). Figure go to dinner first then head over to the show.
RojoOcho 02-12-2008, 12:36 PM My gift I just got for her may be a little too small and I'm kinda worried.
shaunv74 02-12-2008, 02:08 PM Um. Sounds like a personal problem. J/k weren't you guys on "break?"
RojoOcho 02-12-2008, 03:06 PM Yeah. Just showing that I care. That's all. Don't get it twisted. I got another gift for someone else too... :)
Apostle 02-12-2008, 03:12 PM Yeah. Just showing that I care. That's all. Don't get it twisted. I got another gift for someone else too... :)
Getting a gift for your mom dont count man :)
j/k good that you are exploring your options while on this "break"
RojoOcho 02-12-2008, 04:04 PM I got my mom a card... it's mailed off.

Uhh, is the a prank????
I hope not, if this is just a Vday joke, hes probably taking it seriously and sleeping with all the lonely girls out there who aren't in relationships and get sentimental around V day.
Just saying,... If this is a joke, its bound to backfire....
RojoOcho 02-13-2008, 05:16 PM I'm going to knock on the girl-I'm-with-a-break-with's door, say hello, hand her the gift, and walk away.
shaunv74 02-15-2008, 12:06 PM How did everyone's Vday go?
Mine went great! Jen made me breakfast in bed and the surprise swung by work with lunch.:) She's so great.
Dinner was received very well as were both sets of Jammies. Pictures will be coming...no none of those kind.:nono:
Jedi54 02-15-2008, 01:09 PM V-day went really well!
I threw a lasagna in the oven, we drank a bottle and a half of White Merlot, and finished it off with some chocolate covered strawberries. :)
I even caved and bought roses.

I think alot of women are like that now adays. they expect that men will fall over themselves to lavish the women with gifts.
had a convo with girl and she was talking about rings. told her if we ever get to that point, she will be happy with what she gets, cause she's not getting anything else.

I'm glad you didn't say ALL women.... I am definitely not that way.
My husband and I were not that much into other holidays, but VD was the big one for us. We equally lavished gifts on each other. Since he died, I've been buying myself roses.
And the ring thing... we weren't into rings either... my "engagement ring" from him was the down-payment on my 2001 SVT Cobra convertible :)
shaunv74 02-15-2008, 02:29 PM Yeah Jen is the same way. She doesn't need expensive stuff. She likes it when I put in effort to do something nice.
Sometimes just buying something expensive would be easier :) but it really is the thought that counts with her.
dozer 02-15-2008, 02:46 PM girls act dumb at times and pisses me off!! us guys got what we call BUSS( Built Up Sperm Syndrome), if your not givin it to us, im pretty sure that theres someone in the neighborhood that will!SO for you people that are married just take that as some advice and dont play around with our sexuality....Men NEED to get rid of it!!its just the way of life....
Apostle 02-15-2008, 02:47 PM My Jenn is high maintenance, i just cant afford it at the moment, so i'm running up a tab :)

Most likely there are other problems in your relationship if you're not getting what you want in bed. You may want to seek help...
dozer 02-15-2008, 02:54 PM dude i dont need help...i live in socal....

hough2696 02-26-2008, 07:16 AM A guy I used to work with came in and gave all of us ladies heart balloons.
So i took two of them home to my lil girl.....and she though that was the coolest thing ever....
Those damn things were still floating up until last Saturday when I slashed them with scissors after I caught her playing with my hair cutting scissors. I had to prove a point.............
Apostle 02-26-2008, 07:29 AM damn girl, where the hell you been?
