Import to Taiwan? Almost same price!
If I can bargain invoice (possible), it can be US30000 after tax.
US1:NT35. Therefore, about NT 1,000,000.
Import taxes and other fees for RX8 = NT 620,000.
WOW!!!!
New RX8 = NT 1.7 million... (almost US50,000)
don't know if that is base model or not.
If I wasn't graduating next year, I would definitely got one without consideration. Join the RX8 owner's club. However, now... I am staring at my dad's 1995 Volvo 850 Forest Green
But on the bright side, I get to keep the funds from my BMW sale, and also one free car!

Don't you get to import one car without paying the tariff/taxes back into Taiwan? I thought this was something you could do in the mid-1990's, have the laws changed?

Would it be cheaper to import your RX-8 from a country other than the US? Perhaps a country that is closer? I know that the US dollar is a weak currency at the moment which is good for exchange rates, but maybe you could save import costs if the car was closer to Taiwan.

The beautiful days of pre-WTO (world trade organization) is over. Taiwan has a 10 year schedule to decrease auto import taxes and other.
If it is global pricing, then better to buy in Taiwan.
Benefits of buying in Taiwan
1. Warranty valid
2. maybe 5-speed automatic in the future.
3. Mazda can fix the little bugs in present model.
4. Hopefully better future efficiency.
5. Maybe have leather with non-touring package. Who needs heated seats in Taiwan? Only when you want to play a prank on the passenger or need to lose weight while driving. Then you'll have salty sweat on your leather. No Good.
Maybe I will meet a rich wife and her dad will buy it for me. hahaha... ya right... gift of babe magnet to your new son-in-law. hahaha...

i heard that if you are a taiwan citizen but you are studying abroad. you are allowed to bring in a car without all the taxes and stuff. my has dual citizenship for taiwan and USA, supposedly going to bring back her 330ci to taiwan, not taxes. don't know how true this is tho.

That is TRUE for "PRE-WTO". Post-WTO... KA-CHING...
Here is the calculation if interested...
under 2000cc - 27.5%
over 2000cc - 35%
3 type of taxes need to be applied.
[A] Car value + frieght - depreciation.
[1] duty tax [A x 27.5%]
[2] commodity tax. [1]x35%
[3] Sales tax. [2] x 5%.
Total taxes: [A] + duty + com + sales.
for under 2000cc, that is about 65%.
Then you have the storage fee in Taiwan, and also the inspections [NT60,000] you need to pass.
My friend brought an X5 last year (2 year old). He paid about NT700k (US20,000). I checked the value of 330ci. A 2 year old is about NT1.4 m -1.5m. With this new WTO tax bullS, I think it is cheaper to pick one up in Taiwan.
Things were definitely cheaper in the US in 1996, when US1 : NT 25. You can buy a Porsche 911 here for the price of a BMW 328i in Taiwan. Now it is US1: NT34.2. No good!
