View Full Version : 5th gear grinding???
sidewaysrx8 01-27-2008, 09:59 PM my rx8 will grind trying to go into 5th ever now and then, but the wierd part is it does it even if i try to shift slow versus shifting fast, and its only when im cruising at higher speeds..it is an 04 so yea i know that might have something to do with it...
Razz1 01-27-2008, 10:05 PM If your under 60k miles take it in for warrenty.
Jasonawojo 01-27-2008, 10:10 PM My '04 has been doing the same thing, around 4K rpm and up going into 5th. I'm waiting until summer to bring it in, as I'll be able to do without the car more easily then. I made a note of it during my last warranty visit though, and they did the clutch switch TSB in response :lol2:
sidewaysrx8 01-27-2008, 10:16 PM i do have a k&n intake and a header-back exhaust, i don't know how much shit they're gonna give me for that at the dealership
i have the same problem wether im going fast or slow my fifth gear makes this grinding noise that pisses the hell out of me. i would do it but my warranty expiered, i got 40k on my rx8

PRL 84U 01-28-2008, 04:39 PM quick question on all of our 'grinding' issues. I've flat out grinded 5th a couple times early on due to my fault, where i let the clutch out too early and heard a devastating shriek of gear on gear teeth grinding. Are all of our tranny problems where people hear 'grinding' referring to the same type of noise? I'm asking because I experience minor resistance when shifting into 2nd/5th, but no deadly grinding, more like strong resistance that results to extra clicking/clunking. I can manipulate the resistance by shifting faster/slower to its liking. Thanks for the help in advance.

Coll,
I had the same problem. My tranny had to be rebuilt. The drive train warranty on the 8 is 60k, to make sure call Mazda: 800 222 5500
Not sure if that number works outside of the US.
Cheers,
Alex C.

yea,
that is why i asked where he or she was.. we tend to assume that they are in the usa..
not always the case..

mysql101 01-28-2008, 05:50 PM i had the same issue. going into 4th at rpms above 4k resulted with the transmission grinding or not letting me shift till rpms dropped.
mazda eventually gave me a replacement. it took about a month.

did u have any mods when you took it in, cause mine has intake and exhaust, and im getting sick of not being able to use 5th on 1-95
mysql101 01-29-2008, 06:39 PM yeah, a lot of mods. but I had brought the car in before the turbo was installed and complained about the same gear with the same problems, so I could back it up that the car had issues prior to the mods.
rotarypower49 01-29-2008, 06:59 PM are there any o4 8 owners with more than 75 k miles on them out there ?
will a turbo with a lower boost say 5 hurt the warranty ?
mysql101 01-29-2008, 07:00 PM haha.
any FI mod will void powertrain warranty.
ok update. i called mazda to make sure and it is 60k as swiftnet and swoope stated above. I have to bring it in this Thursday and the guy at the dealer said well go for a spin, and i guess well go from there.
mysql101 now that u had it fixed do you hear the least bit of noise or is it totally gone?
mysql101 01-29-2008, 10:02 PM no problems shifting with the new tranny. it was a bit stiff for a few hundred miles as it broke in though.
swoope 01-30-2008, 01:33 AM make sure the recall it done while your car is in.

hello I am at the dealer in Hartford ct and they taking the console out to do some testing the guy said. Recall is done
I'm so pissed off ATM I swear. The customer service sucks I'm eating with my gf ATM I'm on my iphone as soon as I get home I'll tell you the bs they told me.
Update:
so here is the story from the beginning. i got the at 11 am this morning, and some old lady was working at the desk where there was this other guy. was pretty cool. come to find out tony march doesnt own the place anymore. So anyways she proceeds to tell em she will get on of the tech guys to go for a ride with me and hell listen while i drive. so we took it on the freeway and they guy heard it. he said he wasnt sure what it was so hell take out the console and look at it.
He said sometimes the padding underneath the console goes bad or something so noise comes out, but it could also be with the tranny. anyways we get back to the shop. hes like ill take a look at it right away. itll only be 15-20 mins tops. and all of the sudden the old hag runs out of the office, yeah but we gonna have t charge u for it since u dont have a warranty anymore and it might not be the tranny. i asked her how much she said around 50$ i said fine. so 45 mins pass and the guy comes out and says there are 2 screws somewhere underneath the console that were loose and he didnt find anything wrong with the tranny. he said the old lady should be out with the paper work in 5 min.
15 mins later she comes out and tells me yeah they have the car on the lift its running they are trying to see if there is anything wrong from underneath.....i had the keys in my pocket and i could see the car outside the window. but i didnt say anything, i wanted to wait and see what she told me.
25 mins later she comes and says its almost ready they are washing it for you. again i look outside the window there is no one around my car. anyways this is what she wrote in the report.
a gears grinding customer to tst drive with tech
diag check for noise roadtst with tech visually
inspect upper and lower shift boots torn
300.00 to replace customer declined repair
currently
thats word for word. i drove the car and 80% of the noise is gone. but my fifth gear u can still hear it. i might be paranoid or it might be the tranny, but i really dont appriciate being lied to like she did. becauce of a shift boot my 5th gear grinds??? BS...im just confused as what to do from here, i dont want to let the old hag get away with this, i think part of it has to do is that im 21 and she thinks she can blabber anything and ill be like yes mam.
there was a guy working for honda...he was being a smart ass cause he had his honda hat and honda jacket he worked for manchester honda lol.
he dropped off his wifes mazda for a problem with the window and he said it sounds a little fishy.
so ill take any suggestion...from here
so here are pics of my "washed car"

and no that is not bird shit lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/colossos/IMG_0065.jpg
my ripped boot i think this is what she was talking about, the cause of my gear grinding.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/colossos/IMG_0064.jpg
and this is the boot i got for Christmas from my gf. she bought it from PGraphics im gonna install it today i think
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/colossos/IMG_0066.jpg
how hard is it to do it?
ok... so i went to install my new shift boot and looky what i found.
im guessing this is why the noise was reduced. what you guys think.
can i use anything to cover that hole up? i was thinking duck tape but idk....

StealthTL 01-31-2008, 04:55 PM Let me get this right - the dealer packed rags around the boot to 'quieten' it?
S
ummmmm......yes sir...seems that way
now you think its the tranny or the actual hole that is the problem?
swiftnet 02-01-2008, 10:36 AM OMG!!!
I'd be ready to tear some heads off if I were you.
Call Mazda and tell them what has happened, ask for a dealer with the highest rating that is somewhat close to you. I ended up going to a dealer that was 100mi away, they were very good.
When you get to the new dealer and tell them what happened at the other place, this will make anyone think twice before doing anything fishy.
On a side note, the 5th gear grinding is a synchro problem the '04's seem to 'get'. Usually the problem is more profound when the car is cooler, at least mine was. I noticed it when going from 4th to 5th at >4K. The feeling was 'crunchy' not a loud grind, just not very smooth.
Good Luck
PRL 84U 02-01-2008, 03:10 PM a rag...
i think you have a case here.
yeah im trying to figure what to do next. i think im going to call mazda and have a chat with them
