First of all I want to give Credit to ModestoRx8 for this modded. We got together one Sunday and made our own Rotary brake lights. Here are the pictures. Enjoy. :)

:) Looks great! You got a regular production line going there! But where are the pics showing the mounting of the light itself from behind? Did you use the case from that brake light or .... or ... need more pics

Sorry, No pictures of the light bulb. We must of not taken one, but we drilled a small hole to fit an 194 bulb and an harness connection in the back.

Looks good for a home grown mod...................nice job.
I still like the rx8strakes "stealth" one better, but it appears to be dis-continued.......anybody know why?
Glad I got mine before they stopped. I like this one because you don't really see any red at all during the day(even though the pic implies that). Then when the lights are on you get the three in the corners, and the brake lights up the middle portion.
Maybe you can further modify yours if you like this idea? I think if you could perfect it, you could sell a bunch.

I don't have a pic of one with the brakes applied, but here's one with the lights on during the day.

Nice DIY! A bunch of questions. What is the black gooey adhsive? Seems to make a bit of a mess, no? Why not use molding tape? How do you change the bulb? What happened the other third brake light? I f that is not in use I would think it would fail inspection, no?

The black gooey stuff is marine silicone. it is messy, but once cleaned up it dries black and is not visible. We needed something that you could pack into corners or imperfections from cutting as the taillight we purchased does not match the curvature of the rotary emblem exactly. We tried heating the brake cover... bad idea. :)

So on the whole not bad.

Mine was the prototype for this project so I used an LED in my light. to change it I will have to remove the lens... I was not thinking...

the other two we did with a little bit more forethought and the 194 harness is accesible form the back of the "box" for the rotary accent symbol if changing is needed.

We did not disable or alter any of the existing brake lights... so I am not sure how to answer your question.

Mazurfer - we all decided that we wanted this as a running light rather than a brake light or a combo. your idea would be cool, but it would get more complicated to wire and install as a "home grown" kit.

As ModestoRx8 said, we all wanted just an running light instead of having an brake light. Because we already have the third light in the middle of our truck when applying the brakes, i thought it wouldn't look as good when it just turned ON with the brakes applied. We wanted to keep it very simple and clean.

It's comes on with the running lights, not the brake lights.

wait. this is or is not turned on by application of the brakes?

It is a running light when the clearance lights are on.

If anyone has seen the trailer hitch brake lights on a truck can attest to this. When the brakes are applied a person's attention is focused down at the light. I personally did not want to cause a distraction when I wired mine and I also wanted it to show as much as possible so I attached it to the parking lights.

A person could easily add in a second LED and wire it to the brake wire that comes on when the brakes are applied. ;)

Nice write-up guys.

Dremels are a Godsend but we should know that since they are also called rotary tools. :D:

thansk i think its safer the way you did it- just the thread title says brake light. and since it was lit but the High center ligth was not there was some confusion.

good job guys:)

can you give extra details on how you removed the rotary accent? also, what did you use for the 194 bulb adapter? I would imagine that is something available at a local auto parts store? Also, the adhesive you used, was it fairly simple to clean it up? Thanks. Again, that mod looks incredible.

We use an heat gun to heat up the glue, which made so easy. We use glue instead of the sticky tape to ensure it didn't come off when got first got our Rotary Emblems, so we need to heat up the glue and POP it came off without damaging the edges of the bumper.

The haness we use was an 194 replacement kit you can get @ Kragen or Autozone, it cost like $1.99.

We use black silcone adhesive which can also be purchase from Kragen or autozne. Once you put it in, the material goes everyway, but once you clean it up any shop towel it's easy to play with, the stuff will harder in 24 hrs. And if you don't like the way it's look, take it out rewipe everything down, and start all over, you have plenty of play with the material.

Good luck.

Technically this mod is not hard to do. Look at the wiring DIY on the link I posted earlier in this thread. Decide what to use for your "RED" material and what light source you are going to use.

The wiring and install time on this mod are VERY short. 20 - 30 minutes tops, the part of this that takes time is all the cutting needed to make a 6 - 8.00 constant curved red tail signal fit into a variable curved small space. and if you make one mistake... back to the store for another lens...

I think it took us 45 - 85 minutes to cut / refit / recut/ refit / clean up / refit / recut / etc. on the first lens and then we used that as a template for the other one we made.

This mod is not difficult, but it is a labor of love. I am sure that there are other materials that could be used for the lens that are as cheap and easy to come by, I was just unable to find any, and the trailerlights worked.

if i paypal you some cash would you mind picking up the trailer light and using your template to cut me one? I can do the wiring and siliconing and such myself, but do not have the tools to cut it. Or I could even go pick up the taillight myself and just ship it to you with a few bucks included in the box to ship it back.

would REALLY appreciate it!

glad I came across this before sticking on my accent.. its at home waiting for install, just hasnt been done yet!

Well hit up Modestorx8 for this request. Becuase I don't have an paypal account. I myself really wouldn't have anytime to time to cut one. I would ask ModestoRx8.

If you still want to wait further, maybe I can cut one out later on......? thanks

Easiest way to do it is to purchase the lens from RX8strakes.com and then do the wiring to make it work.

Their lenses are only like 28.00 bucks or something. By the time you ship it, I ship it back and I buy it and cut it, it will be more expensive than just getting theirs.

Cutting these is a pain.

These look good. I have the old derwankel housing, but I modified it a bit to take a larger LED bulb (921), and I have it hooked up as a 4th brake light.
