View Full Version : 'Lapping' noise?
I've been having a hard time tracking down what can only be described as a lapping noise coming from the engine bay under idle. It seems like it would be most likely a belt but I've checked and tension seems fine and no damage to any belts.
Anyone have any ideas? I can't hear the lapping under load but that might just be due to the exhaust note. My MPG has also dropped considerably. I'm used to having a CEL due to a straight pipe, but I'll be getting the codes pulled to see if there's anything else.
In addition, I also have a very high pitched whine coming from the engine bay 80% of the time, mostly during cold start / warmup period. Its probably an electric motor or the alternator.. Anything I should check in to on that?
Razz1 01-24-2008, 12:38 AM High pitch whine is normal.
Lapping. What does lapping sound like.
You mean when I take my tonque and like something like a dog?
DOMINION 01-31-2008, 01:08 AM "Lapping noise"? Sounds like a Rotary to me ;)
Detrich 12-07-2008, 08:41 PM mine just starting doing this noise too... it's not the whistle noise of the rotary... it's some other type of swooshing sound that pulsates:
"shhh shhh shhh shhh" sounding like that...
it happens intermittently on my car- even when it's warm. i'm not sure what it is either and wonder if anyone knows what this is or if it's something i need to worry about.
any ideas?
restiller 12-07-2008, 09:18 PM I was wondering if that sound was my fans. Noticed it around 40k miles. Couldn't be temp related because I heard it at 60 degrees F; it's 20F now and I still hear it.
Subscribing for answers.
Detrich 12-07-2008, 10:08 PM no one has any experience with this issue? :(
It probably is a good idea to check your plug wire connections. I had a kind of loud "ch ch ch" sound a while ago, and I found that the plug wire boots were not firmly on the spark plugs. Pushed everything in firmly and it was fine.
Detrich 12-08-2008, 09:26 PM thanks for the feedback... are the wire plugs hard to reach for the mechanically-challenged?
05rex8 12-08-2008, 10:00 PM maybe you are hearing a fapping noise instead
Potentiated 12-09-2008, 01:04 AM The lapping also sounds like leaves rustling. It happens when you first start your car and, while the car is stationary and in neutral, gently press the accelerator and then let it idle. The lapping/rustling leaves could actually be water swishing.
Could it be the water pump?
restiller 12-09-2008, 10:13 AM ^^Yes, that describes the sound perfectly!
Detrich 12-09-2008, 12:18 PM seriously guys, we are asking about & trying to discuss a legitimate problem & get help from other club members with knowledge on our issue... Yeap I get the noise of liquid moving around when i start my car. I'm also parked on my driveway, which is on a 10-15 grade incline.
Potentiated 12-09-2008, 12:28 PM And the heater core somehow makes a rustling leaves sound? Are you sure? Seriously.
I think it's more of a water jiggling/swishing sound. To get the sound, gently press the accelerator, and you will see that the sound is concomitant with accelerator. In this case, could it be the water pump moving water around?
zoom44 12-09-2008, 12:38 PM i dont have a lapping sound. but from the description,
swooshing sound that pulsates:
"shhh shhh shhh shhh" sounding like that...
gently press the accelerator and then let it idle. The lapping/rustling leaves could actually be water swishing.
trying to diagnose over the internet, without being in the car thats what id say. if they are all coming from the right side.
but i also believed there is good probability that you "Potentiated" , Detrich and worm are each talking about something different
Detrich 12-09-2008, 12:46 PM Hmm... Well mine for sure doesn't sound like fluid or liquid motion... The sound I'm getting matches what the thread author described, which is y I sounded in, as I'm trying to decide whether this issue requires a visit to the dealer or if it's something else... Again it kinds sounds like something rubbing gently against a conveyer belt & pulsating during engine idle like "shh... shhh...shhh.". It's not super loud but just enough where it's noticeable.
Thanks for sounding in.. Keep the comments going. Hopefully someone will know exactly what this is...
zoom44 12-09-2008, 12:49 PM drive up here so i can hear it:)
Detrich 12-09-2008, 01:09 PM Too bad it only started recently or I couldve let u listen @ sevenstock :)
Detrich 02-23-2009, 05:46 AM i'm going to make an app't and get this checked out as soon as the rain stops. hopefully this week or next. will let everyone know what i find out...
Detrich 02-23-2009, 06:29 PM alrighty... i made an app't to have this looked at this wednesday. will post what i find out afterwards- though it doesn't seem like too many ppl really are following this thread anymore
Charles R. Hill 02-23-2009, 07:20 PM If it is a "whistle", check your three breather hoses with the plastic elbows connected to the intake flex duct. Those are prone to becoming brittle/cracking and the "whistling" may be the oil injection nozzle breather hose. Based on limited information I would guess this to be the problem as you have poor fuel economy as a seeming related symptom.
Leaks in these hoses cause erratic MAF sensor readings and the PCM doesn't "like" it.
DOMINION 02-23-2009, 10:55 PM To the og poster; search: "ticking" on this site and you might find your issue.
risky business 02-23-2009, 11:29 PM maybe you are hearing a fapping noise instead
that was my first thought when i read the title!
05rex8 02-23-2009, 11:32 PM Yeah, Detrich didn't appreciate my sense of humor:

ZumnRx8 02-24-2009, 10:16 AM i wanna know what it was i think i got the same thing
Detrich 02-24-2009, 01:13 PM just to clarify, and no disrespect intended... but, if some of u guys read the description of the original poster and the others who've sounded in as confirming the issue, it's not a high-pitched "whistle" and it's not a "ticking" sound... if it were those, i think that's how we would have described the problem- as it would be an obvious difference... at least give us some credit for being able to describe what we're hearing... ;)
that being said, it's not that we don't appreciate your sense of humor. it's just we had a legitimate question and were looking for some constructive feedback...
thanks.

I was responding to this statement and, embarrassingly enough, should have told the OP it was the Secondary Air Pump. Even more embarrassing if somebody already addressed this.
I need to get more sleep.
Detrich 02-24-2009, 05:36 PM oh, ok... my apologies, as i missed that part since it's been a while since i read the original post. the lapping noise is what i've been fixated on as of late.
:)
Detrich 02-25-2009, 01:37 PM alright... took the 8 to alhambra mazda this am. and, fortunately, my car made the noise when i was there, so i was able to show the service guy- joe.
am not sure if he was just blowing me off or not. but, he actually said that that lapping noise is normal and that all 8's eventually start making that sound. i explained that i have compared engine sounds side-by-side with other 8's and i've noticed that other 8's don't make that noise. he said that some of the new ones on their lot even make that noise and said i don't need to be alarmed and that it's perfectly normal. he said unless it's making noticeable loud squeals that it's just negligible engine sounds...
. . . .
:scratchhe
. . . .
so, i just drove home without them doing anything... has anyone else had the dealer look at this?
ZGlide 02-25-2009, 08:11 PM Detrich,
Unfortunately, I have the same noise. More like a "tick tick" or a "chi chi" than a shhhhhh shhhh sound. Sorry to say but the dealership, especially Alhambra, is not to be trusted, to my experience.

but was he able to say where the noise was and what the cause was and explain why that is normal?
if not call him and ask
DOMINION 02-26-2009, 05:29 AM OG poster search ticking or ticking sound on here.
Detrich 02-19-2010, 05:02 PM My car is still making the noise... When I get some time off, I'll make an appointment to visit to JRX Rotary in Azusa and have Juni or one of them listen to it and give me their 0.02...
Alhambra Mazda is sometimes really just a sorry excuse for a dealership... All they seem to have perfected is the consistency of scratching up your car every time you bring it in for anything...
Detrich 07-14-2010, 02:43 PM Sorry to re-open this discussion... I still haven't had time to visit JRX.
But, my car is still making the lapping noise. It's more prominent and almost an every time occurrence now- ie a shwoosh shwoosh shwoosh sound coming from the engine bay during idling.
Has anyone been to Sierra Mazda, and are they any good?
ChikaFreak 08-10-2011, 01:56 AM resurrecting.... any updates on this noise? id describe it as more or a rushing water sound
Detrich 08-10-2011, 05:34 PM i've given up, more or less for the time being... as my car ages- approaching 12k miles- it's making all kinds of new interesting sounds... <lol> none sound like anything is "wrong," per say. just weird and not like any piston engine car i've ever owned. what the frack
