View Full Version : Ok so Im in the market of buying a RP Supercat..couple questions.
Alano 01-22-2008, 03:34 PM Looking for a used RP Supercat, cant afford a new one. Came across a question, and I need an answer guys. Now supposedly, the newer RP supercats, are made with a Magnaflow Cat, someone now tell me the reason why people spend 320$ for a new RP Supercat, when they can spend 70$ and buy this....

Thats a Cat I found online, and here is a picture I found off an old thread of a new RP Supercat, theyre prettymuch identical, and I believe the RP has a big magnaflow stamp on it.

Thanks guys.
Alano 01-22-2008, 03:35 PM Btw, I dont need the extra piping behind the cat. I have a full 3" custom exhaust, was going to cut the midpipe out, and weld the cat in its place, I dont have time for CEL's :)
snipaz2420 01-22-2008, 03:43 PM yea thats the new supercat. i guess you could just get the cat and have an exhaust shop weld it in
staticlag 01-22-2008, 03:44 PM rotary performance uses a Bonez catalytic element. Its a metal core.
I can't access that link from my job, but I'm willing to bet its not a high temp metal core like the supercat is.

They are seemingly the same? Right? I may go that route, as long as I can verify that I dont have to change my cats every couple thousand miles from it melting lol.

Your probably right, this is all it says on the site that sells the magnaflow cat.
"These converters have a stainless steel/aluminized construction for a Long-Life. They also use the Magnaflow Recessed Catalyst and Special Lap-joint Construction to move exhaust out smoother and faster, which in return improves efficency, fuel economy, and gains in performance!"
snipaz2420 01-22-2008, 03:55 PM i have the older supercat which would fail at around 10k miles for some(and me). i'll probably be calling rp to see what they can do. one of the reasons i went with the supercat is because if anything failed(which happened) rp would take care of it. if you buy the cat itself and it fails you might be out $70 and wind up having to buy another. just my 2 cents

Mine failed last month and RP switched it out for free. They basically have 2 things they can/might do from what I understand...
1) you send in your pipe and they cut out the old and replace with the new cat.
2) if they have a pipe with the cat already replaced they might send it to you with a shipping label to send yours back.
Either way I was very satisfied with the service... definitely a good buy imo.
r0tor 01-22-2008, 07:03 PM where is this rp cat = magnaflow rumor coming from?

that makes me happy to hear man. thx!
Alano, I hope you didn't misconstrue what I said.... I said rx7store.net's "high flow cat" uses magnaflow. Which for me 10,000 miles later gave me a stucked up Y-pipe :(
Alano 01-22-2008, 11:42 PM I know Keef ;) I was just using this as a broadened point, I just wanted to see why no one's used this before.
JB_Rotary 01-22-2008, 11:43 PM Also even if you buy this(I have one) wouldn't you also need O2 bungs, Both flanges? I did a light search on this site and couldn't find reasonable prices for flanges. It seems the 8 doesn't use a standard size.
DOMINION 01-22-2008, 11:59 PM What about the Greddy high flow cat? Is that like the same thing RP is doing with the MF cat?

I have the older Supercat. Been on for 12k miles and still running strong. What is RP's warranty on this cat, do you know? I know you said they replaced yours for free, which im sure they would do for me (i live 15 min away from RP and bought clutch/exhaust/supercat from them) should mine go poo, but im just wondering if it has an "official" warranty that covers it for so many miles or whatever.

I'm not all too sure on the specifics... they basically asked for my name and checked when mine was shipped out to see if it was the old version or not. After that he presented me with the 2 options, saying he might be getting a pipe in he could send me. At first they were leaning towards having me send mine in so they could cut the old out and put new one in, but I couldnt exactly drive around with no midpipe so I got lucky in that regard I guess. You'd probably get a better more clear cut answer by calling them up. If you have the old version I think they'll replace it for free if it does fail. No clue if it's the new model though.
r0tor 01-23-2008, 03:43 PM i have the original model with over 20k miles on it... still working
Red Devil 01-23-2008, 03:52 PM i have the original model with over 20k miles on it... still working
50K+ and still going strong on one of the first 5 ever made...
Alano 01-23-2008, 04:01 PM Just wondering how it would work if I bought it off someone. They have the original version too, from what I hear, about 20k miles on it, but if it fails, Im not all too sure if I can get a new one since I bought it used.
Nemesis8 01-24-2008, 12:06 PM I have the second one ever built from my memory :) Currently over 40K on it and still flowing strong. I burn Shell V-Power and use ProtekR premix.
philsbluerx8 01-24-2008, 03:34 PM have they built a new super cat? i just went to RP website but i didnt see the new super car from it....
Now that I think about it, could using Royal Purple oil have bigger effects on the cat? Maybe that is why my cat went? That and crappy gas....
Ultralisk 02-10-2008, 01:11 AM So the SuperCat sold at the RX7.com store is not this one :
http://www.rx7.com/store/rx8/rx8supercat.html
The reason i ask is because I was going to buy it, but the one in the picture posted above has a different Cat... the magnaflow.
I also use RP Oil... but 91 gas.
swoope 02-10-2008, 03:28 AM not the same cats..
and rx7 store stands behind there products..
they have replaced a few recently... they had a few bad in a group buy...
the above cat looks like a magnaflow ceramic core... will work, but not for long...
