Video clips are at the middle of page 3

My car wasnt getting enough attention in the stuck up Coral Gables neighborhood I live in so last weekend I decided to drive around for about 8 minutes at about 15 - 20 mph with the backtwo suicide doors all the way open. A passenger accompaniedme in case things got hectic. I will tell you guys onething! Those arrogant BMW Porsche and Mercedes drivers were finally giving someattention to my car. Yesguys I know I am a complete moron to disrespect the carlike this and drive recklessly but it was all in goodhumor. At first I thought all the doors would fly back and forth as Iwas driving since you cant close any of them unless the suicide doors are closed soIonly took it down my block and back. I realized afterwards that as long as I droveslow and didnt break fast everything was fine. After the first couple minutes we didnt even have to hold onto the front doors b/c they didnt move. With theexception of a stand up comic I that performedin June, this was both the most hilariousand pathetic moment of my year. The expressions peoplehad on their faces in other cars as they saw mine pass were priceless. The neighbors walking their dogs and anyone standingoutside was stunned. Well The Rx8 is now a well known car in myarea. Ive got a small video clip of this ludicrous suicidal experience on an empty street but cant find anywhere to upload it. For now youguys will haveto use your imagination to get an idea of what it was like. Im not proud of this at all but it was something I felt I just had to try one time w/the Rx8.

I'm not so sure that they was looking because the car was unique, or was due to the facts that it's the fist time they saw someone driving with the doors oopen. :D

Try going shopping with a 12 inch penis strapped to your head. Probably result in a similare crowd response :)

If you had an accident, the cabin strength wouldn't protect you with the doors unlatched - let alone risking another person's life as well :(

I really think it's a shame the transmission can be engaged with the rear doors open.

Talk about people who aparently never did anything different in their lives.

What, none of you went to college or something? If you knew the area as he describes his driving it was not dangerous and he acted silly. Not that big of a deal.

Everyone that bashes this guy for "Endangering his life and those around him" at an incredible ------>15 mph<-------- on an empty street are probably candidates for the Most Boring Person on the Planet. Yes, you'll live to be 110 years old, but, to quote Mr. William Wallace from Braveheart, "Every man dies. But not every man truly lives."

I can't imagine the thrills of life driving down an empty street at 15 mph with my doors open. My head would probably explode at the illogical level of excitement.

Is anyone bashing him for that? I thought people were bashing him for doing something so incredibly lame and pathetic. I suppose Kev commented on the safety aspect, but only after primarily pointing out how pathetic this cry for attention was. College pranks? Come on, even plain old college-style projectile vomiting is more interesting (in a sordid, attention-seeking sense) than "ooh, look at me, I'm driving with my doors open". Truly living? Well, I don't think you were implying that Jerky's putting around with his doors open was an example of living life at the limit, were you? It's more an example of someone really needing to get a life... ;)

Gordon

Edit note:

Never mind, after rereading the posts, I still agree with my previous thread. Someone twisted my post and made it sound as though I was protecting this guy for his "incredible stunt". No, I'm talking about the wankers so concerned about the safety issues associated with driving ----> 15 mph <----- with the doors open, which is what my post was about. It's 15 mph and someone is whining about safety issues and the fact that he is "endangering" someone else's life. That, is what I am referring to. And in reference to that, I posted Mr. Wallace's quote. Miscommunication. I am not saying that his stunt was "incredible", in fact I agree it's kind of lame. But then someone posts about safety issues, and two other people agree with him. That's even lamer.

but here, I'll give you guys something to bash me about. In high school, I owned a crappy 89 oldsmobile with front wheel drive and crappy AC. Needless to say there wasn't anything exciting about the car. To make up for the lack of excitement, my buddies and I would take the car on backroads and ride around on the top of the car. Roll the windows down, lay on your belly on top of the car holding on to the sides, and then have the driver punch it. I don't think we ever took it above 45 mph, we wanted to play it safe. Yes, that's sarcasm.

edit: cut through the crap cake.

driving with the rear doors open?! That's crazy! Holy cow! And at 15mph???

YOU'RE A REBEL! I WISH I WAS THERE!

Ugh. If you want to get noticed, do something a little more thrilling.

What ever, folks. He did something he considered zany, and wanted to share with us. Different strokes for different folks. Give the guy a break. It's not like none of us have ever done anything premeditatedly silly before.

You guys misunderstoodme. I said I only drove it down an empty street on the video clip. Aside from that I drove all overmy neighborhood and the streets were not empty atall. It was 3 in the afternoon on saturday. The streets are wide thoughso I wasnt worried about another car hitting one of the open doors but the other drivers sure were. And 15 was the slowest speed I drove at. By the way I found someone on this forum who will host the videofor me so you guys will get to see it now.

Safety is not the issue.

Just seems kinda lame to do it to show up your bmw owning neighbors. Showing off your car in a cocky manner is awefully conceded. Then again its my opinion.

I do condone mindless stunts though.

Years ago my buddy used to drive sitting on the door frame, steering with his feet and playing drums on the roof while listening to his favorite songs, this after having a few beers. (he is still alive and has since changed his ways)

Now that's something to worry about.

What we have here is a potential image problem. BMWs are good well engineered cars, but I would never buy one because they are driven almost exclusively by tw*ts (no offence, unless you drive a BMW of course). We've already got off to a bad start with an RX8 being in a Britney Spears video; please could people avoid turning the car into a laughing stock before I've even taken delivery.

Looks like there'll be a new warning in the next rev of the owner's manual. You know, one of those "Do not place fingers under the lawnmower while the blades are engaged" kind of messages. After all, the lawyers do need to protect Mazda from families of potential Darwin Award recipients.

Guys here are two clips of the open suicide door drive. They are both 8 seconds long

I drove in the first clip and got up to about 30mph bythe time I got closer to the camera but my buddy drove in the second clip and was too afraid to go above 20 as you will notice

Video 1 -- http://varpllc.com:8082/rx8/pics/suicide.avi

Video 2 -- http://varpllc.com:8082/rx8/pics/suicidewave.avi

VERY BIG THANK YOU to Thinthi who is hosting these for me. At least nowyou guys havesomeone else to yell at.

Enjoy b/c I know I did LOL

If I had more than twohands I would have taken a video of the neighbors and other drivers reacting to my car while I was driving likethat but hey theres always next time

Theres also a third clip of just the car sitting in the driveway and for some reason the camera made it look like greenlines were falling down from the sky. You need Quicktime toview this one if you dont have it dont worry its just a pan of the car

anyone who insults our good friend jerky for this idea is just jelous they didn't think of it first. i would love to do somethign like this, but because of safety issues, and the fac there are cops ALL OVER new york city i'm gonna avoid it. its not like he is saying he didn't something amazing and then showed how when you press the gas in neutral the rotors spin faster. he said he did something neat and then he showed it to us all. it was a good idea, its funny, and you gotta admit its not something you see everyday.

The "Jackass" generation at its best.

That was supposed to be funny?

Next, film yourself "surfing the hood" of your new 8, in your underwear with a goofy helmet. On cue, have the driver slam on the brakes and launch you into a baby pool full of Jell-o and dog poo. THAT would be much funnier. Then maybe MTV could give you a job.

i thought that was pretty crazy...one thing though, when you braked, did the rear doors swing forward and dent your front ones?

JeRKy 8 Owner
11-03-2003, 05:09 PM
No the suicidedoors did not swing forward when I broke b/c I made sure to apply the breaks very lightly and slowly. ActuallyThe one on the right almost swung one time whenI was turning too fast but it never hit the front door b/c the passenger in the back caught it in time.

I knowthis video is pretty lousy guys but hey its a start.

What would really have been funny would have been to tow the worlds-longest string of tin cans behind you. Maybe 100 yards long or something. Not that I recommend you do that. But I would have laughed my a$s off.

mentalpimp HAHAHA sounds like youve been downhere more than once

The problem w/the videos is they were recorded ona digital camera that is meant for taking photos but also makes small inaudbile movies like these. Had a digital camcorder beenavailable I definitely would have recorded the things people said and did when they rolleddown their windows and taunted me. Someone toldme to go fuck myself and then I told him it sounds like you need a hug and that my car can give you one w/ the doors. I guess he didnt see the commercial b/c he responded to that w/ his middle finger.
