View Full Version : Transmission came apart at 60379 miles
purdyman57 01-16-2008, 09:08 PM The dealership here in San Diego told me a "retainer clip came apart in the 4th gear and damaged the countershaft, which caused a chain reaction to eat the rest of the gears."
I just talked to Mazda North America and they want my maintenance records since i've owned it. I got my clutch replaced at 54k miles. I have records of oil changes, but I don't know really what they're looking for since this is an internal transmission problem.
Has anyone dealt with MNA before? Any advice you guys can offer me about the situation?
Old Rotor 01-16-2008, 11:25 PM The factory transmission warranty was up at 60K. I have seen them cover parts out of warranty if you have had all your service done by the Mazda dealer. Whats your case?

they want to see it because they want to make sure that you *did* your maintenance properly.
to me is just bullshit, this transmission is not that durable in the first place. thats why Mazda is getting such a low rating on JD powers.
Razz1 01-17-2008, 01:08 AM Not anymore, we think they may be using the MX5 tranny for 09

What maintenance? Mazda doesn't spec a tranny oil change until 60,000 miles.

They are already using the MX-5 transmission. The two have shared the same gearbox from the start.
The 6-speed shares the same roots as the original FD transmission, which was very robust. The 5-speed offered in other markets is that very transmission.
Why the Y-16MD is so weak compared to its stablemates is beyond me.
Probably an RPM issue.

You know Mazda, they can come up with whatever bullshit they can think of.
If they can say aftermarket clutch can cause their weak ass Clutch bracket to break, im sure they can come up with anything.
chrism 01-17-2008, 12:37 PM same exact thing happened to me at just over 10k

I have records of oil changes from different dealerships, as well as one or two from Jiffy Lube.
I got my clutch replaced at a dealership in Florida, so they faxed over the information to the dealership i currently have it at.
I don't know of any other service I should have had done, or maintenance records etc. I got the car at 40000 miles. I'm hoping that is enough. I can't imagine missing an oil change would cause a transmission to break.
edit: missing a record of an oil change, not the actual oil change!

nycgps 01-19-2008, 12:55 PM any updates ?
purdyman57 01-19-2008, 10:50 PM "Tiffany" at MNA said it'd take them 1-3 days to process the request, as she had to talk to the supervising agent who handles that stuff. It had been 2 days and I called her, left a message, and haven't gotten any word back from her.
The service member at the dealer told me he hadn't heard anything from them either. I'm hoping for word on Tuesday. I'll definitely update this post when I do hear though. I really do hope they go through with the warranty as it's only 300 miles over the limit. If they don't I really doubt I'll ever be a Mazda customer again, and that really sucks because I love the 6, and I was really waiting to upgrade to the 2010 RX-8 if it's as good as they say it's going to be.

What? There is nothing true in what you wrote... the FD transmission was a Mazda box, the Miata 6-speed and RX-8 trans are an outsourced box built by Aisin. The '09 RX-8 will have the brand-new clean-sheet 6-speed designed for the '06+ MX-5. The FD 5-speed shares absolutely nothing in common with the Aisin box in the current RX-8.
I beileve the reason the box is less reliable in the RX-8 vs. the Miata is that the PPF mounts to the opposite side, meaning the engine torque acts on the case differently.
Please see this: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?p=2248218 thread.
olddragger 01-20-2008, 08:57 PM that is why i am getting a trans brace before I track again.
I think there is too much movement--ever watch a gearshift move on a track vid?

purdyman57 01-30-2008, 03:43 AM So I finally got a call from MNA after saying it was only going to be 1-3 days.(8 days later)
Anyway, they said they were going to cover it: parts, labor, et al.
Score one for the underdog today I guess!
