View Full Version : Close to 1300 miles and I haven't had to add oil?

The car had 29,960 miles on it when I got it. I'm at around 31,210 miles and the dipstick is still showing full when I read it. I've checked numerous times this week because its starting to concern me. I was under the assumption that a lot of people have to add 1/3 of a quart every 1000 miles or so. I read that one guy on here changes his oil every 2500 miles and never has to add any. Another thing I noticed was a good bit of foam on the dipstick no matter when I check my oil. It could be sitting a day or it could be at the gas station after driving and warming the engine up and it still has some foam. I heard some foam is normal, but sometimes its hard to read the dipstick. Either the dealer overfilled my oil or I'm not driving hard enough...

I am in the same boat.

I recently added the Sohn OMP adapter and after 5 full tanks of gas, not a single ounce of oil is missing from the reservoir. :(

Soap ur fine, dont be such a worry wart. If its not low its not low, period. The foam thing is well documented, do a search. Ur ok.

The millky oil is nothing to worry about. If it bothers you, get the TSB repair:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/bulletins.html (then click "MILKY SUBSTANCE ON OIL GAUGE/DIPSTICK").

I may not catch them all, but I'm trying! The original over/under for the Winter season was 20 or so, I took 30 if I remember correctly! :)

I've added a full quart of oil in the few thousand miles I have owned the car. It seems some just love to go through oil, while others are more frugal...

I'm disappointed after all the oil consumption hype that my rx8 nary uses any oil. Now I have cases and cases of Castrol GTX taking up space in the garage. Grrr....:uh:

One thing I am curious about is with the last recall that was supposed to inject more oil, why is it that owners seem to be using LESS or at least the SAME oil?

What did the recall really do, as far as oil is concerrned?

maybe I added too much oil (1/2 quart @ 750 miles). :spank:

Usually I'll get an oil change every 3000 to 6000 miles. Yes, sometimes 6000 miles. So sometimes I don't even add 1/2 quart, like when I get an oil change after 3000 miles. Other times, I just add that one time and that does me good until I bring my car in for an oil change.

I'll ask it again but maybe I'll end up starting a new thread for this question:

What did the last recall that supposedly injects more oil REALLY do? Many people, including me, are reporting that their car is using either the SAME amount of oil as before the recall or MORE oil!

So what did the recall actually do with regard to oil injection?

Sometimes the dealer overfills the oil when changing, and therefore you don't see a drop in a long time.

I too change at 3,000 miles, so rarely have to add much, if any.

I see slightly more usage since the recall.

I can't seem to find a good link for the full TSB document (Rosenthal used to work).

Well, I don't trust the "official" statement from Mazda regarding the recall notice. I'm wondering if the real experts on this forum (not the ones at Mazda) have figured out what is REALLY going on with that recall.

I like to keep my oil level at or between the top dot and line. To much oil is bad so do not overfill your oil. Depending on the way you drive you might not have to add oil as soon as others. Do not worry the dip stick does not lie. Also i change my oil and oil filter every 3k miles. At first mazda said 5k and then they cahnged it to 3750 miles but i am sticking with the 3k

You mean the "real experts" who've predicted all Renesis engines will sooner-or-later need to be replaced, that "everybody must pre-mix", that global warming has finally been "put to rest" and that, due to abysmal sales, there will be no RX-8 in 2006... or 2007? Those real experts??

Wow, they changed the metering rate from 1/4 drop to 1/2 drop of oil.

and thats under Full load. so regular driving still use very little.

it really depends on your load, just remember that.

Overfill is not a good thing to do, but in a rotary it's not really a bad thing either (as it is in piston engines where cam's will froth excess).

3k and worry free. ;)

The time between when you have to add oil varies a lot between cars, as well as with the season, temperature, driving style, etc. Mine doesnt usually ever need top-offs between 3000 mile oil changes. So...chill....

Does anyone ever get the "light" mine tends to know whenever I'm within half mile from home then turns on. I check the dipstick and it's about the Half mark. I added oil, it goes away for now. So, does youuuuuuur light come on?

Mine has never got low enough to trigger the light. But I check it at every fill up and top off accordingly, so that's why.

That's a horrible viscosity for cold weather.

Stick to 5w-20 or 5w-30 (or possibly 0w-20 or 0w-30 if it is going to be REALLY cold)

Never had the light trigger. I usually check it every fill up.

using a high viscosity oil makes you get worse gas mileage by a little bit, I see little reason to go so high unless it's very hot out. if you use the 5-20 you should be fine.

My engine seems to use a lot of oil, close to a quart over the last 1000 miles, and I'd rather it used more than less to be perfectly honest, cats are cheaper than engines. I do tend to run the engine in the 3-4k range tho even when cruising, I feel like I'm stressing the engine a bit going any lower since there's so little torque.

I'd run premix in my gas if I were you soap, just for shits and giggles if nothing else. oh and i'm paranoid about my engine since it's my first rotary, you might want to take that into acount when listening to me.

Dealerships overfill the oil on 8's. It's taken about 1.3k miles for the dipstick on my 8 to register a quarter of a quart below full since my first oil change from the dealer.

I remember when I went for an oil change, when it was all said and done, I asked what type of oil they put in, so if I needed to add some, I could add the same oil. They told me they put a synthetic and non synthetic blend in. I was an idiot for not asking beforehand. I got pissed. The book says not to ever use synthetic, and I got worried =X

What is premix? When do I add oil? I'm thinking of a new exhaust, which one is good? I heard that the K&N Intake gives me +20 HP! Is that true? What kind of oil do I use? Is our car turboed? Someone said my car came with pistons, is that true?

Exactly. Viscosity is a measurement of flow resistance, higher being more resistant.

5w-20 is recommended by the engineers who designed the engine and its related systems, and that's what I use.

5w-20 is recommended by the engineers who designed the engine and its related systems, at the behest of MNAO marketing people who were concerned about mileage figures and emissions, and that's what I use.

fix'd :)

Also, for what it's worth, the '09s seem to be using oil fairly liberally.
