View Full Version : Have owned--or--do you also own an Rx7
SleepR1 10-27-2003, 05:48 PM What's been your impression of the Rx8 thus far, and how does the Rx8 compare with your Rx7?
If you could have only one rotary-powered sports car, which would you have--the Rx8 or the Rx7?
sferrett 10-27-2003, 06:04 PM The FD feels faster than the 8 does, the powerband is quite different.
The 8 is at least as good, if not better than (at least in my case) the FD in the handling and brakes department. My FD has new Tein coilovers and Brembo rotors, BTW - the FD feels stiffer but the 8 seems to have no problem performing all the same stunts I can pull in the FD, perhaps I'm just not pushing hard enough.
But it's not the same, and you can't really compare them side-by-side.
If I could only have one, I would keep the 8 because it can seat 4 and it's a lot smoother, and it's new. That said, however - I love my FD and having to sell it is quite a bummer indeed.
Simon.
santino 10-27-2003, 06:47 PM if i HAD to have only 1 car, it would be the 8. It is more of a daily driver, where as the 7 is a weekend toy. i consider myself lucky to have both because the two cars have completely different purposes.
as i said before in another thread--it is like having 2 siblings; you love each on equally but for different reasons. i would have compared kids, but i don't have any.

Literatii 10-27-2003, 06:49 PM I have an '83 GSL and a 8 GT.
I'm not choosing one or the other. I'm keeping both.
The FB has a rawer, and louder driving experience -- which I like. The 8 is much more refined, which I also like.
khoney 10-27-2003, 07:09 PM I'm keeping my Turbo FC, but it pales in comparison to the 8 in every respect. However, you have to remember it's 17-year-old technology.
colin204 10-27-2003, 07:15 PM The 8 is the daily driver and the 7 is the track car.
neit_jnf 10-27-2003, 07:48 PM 1984 RX-7 GSL (12A)
1986 RX-7 GXL (13B)
Lost both in different circumstances and currently own a Protege5 but will be buying the RX-8 sometime next year.
paradigm 10-27-2003, 11:56 PM I traded in my '94 FD for my rx8. I think it handles better than my rx7 did, but with a little more bias toward understeer. The 8 is nowhere near as fast as my 7 was, but hopefully someday I'll be able to take care of that. mwahahahaha!!!:D :p
Omicron 10-28-2003, 02:16 PM 1979 RX-7 (12A) Can't recall for sure, but I think it was a GS.
1988 RX-7 GSL (13B)
I'd say the RX-8 is a far superior car to both of them, in all ways except it's a bit more refined.
SleepR1 10-28-2003, 08:32 PM Wow, lots of first gen Rx7 owners. Why'd you stay away from rotaries for so long? :)

Rumor is the new Rx7 will have a turbocharged Renesis...oughta be a scream :)
3Rotor 10-29-2003, 07:56 AM The RX-8 is my daily driver. An awesome car. But again, like eveyone else has said, different from either a NA or Turbo RX-7 (or Cosmo). I'm glad to see that so many rotary enthusiasts and prior RX-7 owners picked up an 8. I have yet to see another one around town (although a couple of sightings have been reported to me). The only place I see them is at club meetings.
LesPaul 10-29-2003, 12:16 PM Had an 83 RX7 and enjoyed the hell out of it. The 8 is superior in countless ways. Even though though both cars had rotaries, they are so different that it's hard to compare them.

$$$
especially 3Gs. I sold my 84 GS in 94, so at that time the option was a 3rd Gen. Besides, I had a wife & kid in the mean time...
But now I'm back!
Floyd 10-29-2003, 03:16 PM I bought my 86 GXL when I was 17 and had lost my liscense 2x by my 19th Bday from speeding tickets. Needless to say I had a blast in that car. When I had to sell if before I went to college It broke my heart. Ever since then I've been trying to get back into a rotary. But, now having a wife and a 4year old son its been hard too. I've been watchin and reading about rotary concepts all the way from the rx-01 concept years back and now that there is a 4 door 4 seat RX, its only a matter of time. I can hardley wait!
Icemastr 10-29-2003, 09:34 PM 1 88 NA FC
1 87 Turbo II FC
1 93 Touring FD
1 04 RX-8 GT
hope there isnt anymore on the way... 2 piston cars and 4 rotaries its overwhelming...
Urchin 10-29-2003, 10:03 PM Had 79 GS and 86. Now have an 88 convertible and the RX8. Keeping the 88, too mcuh fun with the top down and not woth enough to sell.
The RX8 is much better driving in all respects except the top does not go down.
Forgot, also had a 72 RX3.
I had a 82 FB GSL & a 88 FC vert. I have a 94 FD PEP & an 8. For now I will not part w/ either of them. In the future ,I will probably buy a newer 8 and still keep the FD. I will NOT choose between the two.;)
SleepR1 12-22-2003, 07:47 PM Thanks for the votes!
