View Full Version : Resale value is strong on these cars
rglbegl 01-07-2008, 12:30 PM This is a thread to show everybody how good the resale value of the RX8 actually is.
http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/PricingReport.aspx?VehicleId=1057&SelectionHistory=1057%7c12789%7c92563%7c0%7c0%7c42 316%7ctrue&ManufacturerId=30&PriceType=Retail&VehicleClass=UsedCar&PriceTypePath=Retail&ModelId=199&YearId=2006&Condition=Excellent&Mileage=22000
^^ $23,330 That is the retail value of my car. That is what a bank will loan against the car.
http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/PricingReport.aspx?VehicleId=1057&SelectionHistory=1057%7c12789%7c92563%7c0%7c0%7c42 316%7ctrue&ManufacturerId=30&PriceType=Private+Party&VehicleClass=UsedCar&PriceTypePath=Retail&ModelId=199&YearId=2006&Condition=Excellent&Mileage=22000
^^^ These are the private party value of my car. My car is perfect, but lets just say "good" condition so we are low balling it, not inflating it. $19,250.
My local dealerships are asking $24,000 for similiar cars. (which means they sell for about $22k) and private party are asking about $21,000, and probably getting about $19-20k
Now . . . I paid $19,999 for my car 2 years ago.
KBB Retail value is $23,330
KBB private sale value is $19,250
Dealers are getting $22,000
Private sales are getting $19,500
So If I owned my car for 2 years, and sold it at the low end of the spectrum for $19k. I would have lost $1000 in 2 years, Or $500 per year, or $41.66 per month (effective payment)
So for all you haters . . . . .. You have no room to complain anymore
rglbegl 01-07-2008, 12:31 PM I love my 8!!!!!
turborx8 01-07-2008, 12:32 PM Are you serious?
The original owner of my car paid 48k new and 2years later with only 13,000miles on it, I bought it for $26k used with 8k worth of mods on it.
Raptor75 01-07-2008, 01:09 PM $48K new???????....was this the special gold plated edition?
I bought my GT new out the door for $26,300 it was last years model so I got a good price. I think the most you would pay for a new GT with Nav and all would be around $33 to 35K out the door.
If you believe this guy paid $48K either he was the biggest fool to walk the Earth or you are a little guilable my friend.
By the way, Consumer Reported rated the RX-8 above average for resale value.

Part of the problem is the mods. Whether anyone here will admit it or not, there's a very limited market for cars with them, and most people don't want to bother with them. The company I work for doesn't even resell them if they have anything extensive- they just drop right to the wholesale list. One of my coworkers got a 2005 VR sport with 27k miles on it for $13k because of a bunch of Mazdaspeed stuff on it.
chetrickerman 01-07-2008, 01:23 PM this is great news, but i will never sell my 8, so i need not worry about it
jones75254 01-07-2008, 01:25 PM Coversion rates were around $1.25-$1.30 at that time so 48k is still wayyy too high. No way the dude paid that. May had been $42k (canadian) loaded and out the door..... and thats a stretch.
Beeotch 01-07-2008, 01:28 PM i bought my 04 ti gray with the gt package (appearance pkg, bose, leather, navigation, heated seats, ect) with 28k miles on it for 17k out the door. i thought it was a steal.
Revvittupp 01-07-2008, 01:35 PM Well here in the states, where KBB is more worthless then the paper it's written on, get piss poor resale value. I bought a Touring with 7k for right around $17k 4 months ago, 05 model, but... your car won't retail for $20k, and private party it's maybe worth $16k if you rip someone off.
New Yorker 01-07-2008, 01:35 PM Part of the problem is the mods. Whether anyone here will admit it or not, there's a very limited market for cars with them, and most people don't want to bother with them. How true. I would never consider buying a car that's been modded.

Canadians get their own price, not the US price converted to Canadian dollars.
In related news, they have their own economy.:)
SGTSAT 01-07-2008, 02:14 PM He maybe saying the truth, here in PR.I am paying 601.99 monthly for my 8 2005 A/T
SGTSAT 01-07-2008, 02:15 PM Just because the taxes
jones75254 01-07-2008, 02:19 PM ^^ouch in regards to the price and an even bigger ouch in regards to the AT.
delhi 01-07-2008, 02:25 PM resale value is avg. on these cars. nothing stellar. From my neck of the woods, an 04 is about 53% of its original price with avg mileage.
if you want to see lousy resale look at the high-end MercedesBenz.
Jedi54 01-07-2008, 02:34 PM who ever said anything about selling my RX-8... ;)
(that's also why I don't go 'overboard' with the mods... )

I bought my loaded 2004 GT for $27,500 new in the spring of 2005. If you look at the listings on cars.com for similar cars with similar mileage, dealers are asking $16-17.5K. Carmax has one for $18.5K. I'm guessing I could maybe get $17.5K if I was really lucky, which is losing $10K in value over 32 months, which is more than $300/month.
Luckily for me, I'm happy with the car and intend to keep it for quite some time.
CosmosMpower 01-07-2008, 03:31 PM I would love to see you get 19 for it in 2 years. I bought a new 05 in the middle of 06. It had a MSRP of right at 30K as configured and I sold it for 18K in Nov 07 with 18K miles on it. A 60% residiual is pretty bad for 18 months of ownership. Granted I didn't pay anywhere near sticker so I made out like a bandit and got out of it at the right time.
turborx8 01-07-2008, 03:51 PM You guys are so lucky to have cheap cars in the US. They are sometimes 50% more expensive here in Canada and now that our dollar is worth the same were getting ripped off big time!!!
Here is a picture of the original invoice for my car.
http://www.turborx8.ca/pictures/invoice.jpg
enforcer 01-07-2008, 04:10 PM In Australia the 04 is about 50% of its original price, and likewise if you compare is against other higher end manufacturers its not too bad....
SilverHokie 01-07-2008, 04:21 PM I would have bought a Corvette...

I don't suppose there is a way for us normal non-employee-folks to get a $13K car??? :)
turborx8 01-07-2008, 04:43 PM I would have bought a Corvette...
You dont wanna know the MSRP on those here either. lol

get into debt...!
Revvittupp 01-07-2008, 05:13 PM ha ha turbo, yoiu are funny... or wait, are you really that confused...
That person would have paid 48k if, they had made every protected payment for 60 months. The person PAID around $39k for the car, around $1k in Fees, $6k in taxes, $2400 in insurance... and an estimated $4400 in interest, over 60 months, which he did not pay.

Yeah I was slightly off on the full price.
He paid 46,500 before the costs of borrowing etc.. That was basiclly the cost of the car plus taxes (15%)
Ericok 01-07-2008, 06:05 PM I would love to see you get 19 for it in 2 years. I bought a new 05 in the middle of 06. Wasn't your car, technically, 38 months old since you bought a new, year old car in the middle of 06? 2005 RX8 went on sale Sep 04, you sold Nov 07. That equals 38 months. It's like buying a new car that's been sitting on the dealer's lot for a couple of years and then complaining about resale value. Basing residual on MSRP doesn't make sense since everyone knows no one pays MSRP.
23109VC 01-07-2008, 06:19 PM was at the mazda dealer last night looking at 8s.
they have a 2004 GT - red with black leather intereior. no nav. no appearnace kit.
32k miles. they have it listed for $19k.
$5 says if I offered them 16k or so and said "take it or leave it" they'd take it.
I don't think the resale is so hot on the RX8. which is why i'm heavily looking at a used one. the brand new loaded up GT i test drove last night had a 33k window sticker - MSRP. I could buy the EXACT same car, but a 2006 model with 12k miles for about $23k.
10k in less than a year. ouch
Detrich 01-07-2008, 06:28 PM jake, i think u just got a good deal on your 8 and that actual resale value and kbb varies quite a bit based on what ppl have reported on the board. the only person in our group that made out like a bandit was rick, who also had a white 8. i think he had an 04 gt and sold it private party for $23k. he used to go to the malibu cruise, before the sb gang stopped going to malibu. so, u probably never met him. like don, he then bought a 350z.
RotoRocket 01-08-2008, 12:55 AM Contrary to much of the claims, the resale value of the 8 is about normal, unless you either got totally ripped off as an original purchaser, or you bought one of the newest ones (04) in late 2003.
The average new car depreciates 50% by year 3 after original purchase. This is true of cars in the relative same class as the 8, such as the 350Z, S2K, yada....
Of course, there are cars with exceptional resale value, but they are rare - the Evo (especially IV) comes to mind.
New2u 01-08-2008, 08:49 AM I got mine for a pretty decent price. It only had 6200 miles on it, and got it for 21k. It's an '06 GT package. I think the only real options that it doesn't have on it, that the original owner didn't want, was the 6 disc cd changer and the nav system.

It's about time someone said that about Kelley. I can tell you from having family in the car biz that Kelly is crap and way overrated. Too many people use it and think their car is worth what he says when in reality it is b/t 2 and 5 grand LESS than what he is saying. If you go to a dealer and mention Kelley, you will probably get laughed at.
Banks and dealerships actually use the Black Book (the TRUE market value book) to determine the value of a car, truck, etc. Get your hands on one and you will truly be disappointed at the value of your car. I know I was.

yep, KBB numbers can be very inaccurate depending on location. a Much more accurate way to estimate how much your car is worth is to look at the average price listed on autotrader or cars.com and take ~1000 off that number
rglbegl 01-09-2008, 05:40 PM ttt to counter the other thread about resale
