View Full Version : 40K or under to spend and you can't have your current car.
What do you get of the modern cars (1990+)? Putting practicality aside :p
My top 10...
1.) Used M3 E36/E46 + mods
2.) Used 97 Supra TT + mods
3.) STi
4.) Used FD + mods
5.) EVO
6.) S2K
7.) Used 2nd gen. MR2 + tons of mods
8.) G35/350Z
9.) Used C5 Vette
10.) 03 Cobra/RX-8
The RX-8 is a tossup with the Cobra, but it's just hard to resist all that power, god that would be fun on the highways. If the Cobra didn't have the negative stigma of the american muscle head it would be much higher. The Camaro SS kind of falls into the same cataegory, it would be a blast in a straightline but I want to carve up some turns as well. Late 80s Grand National would be a fun drag car to mess around with. Used 928 with mods for autox... Forester XT with lots of mods for the ultimate sleeper. Depending on what specs the US Legacy has that could be up in the top 5 as well. Integra Type R just misses making the top 10 as well as a 1st or 2nd gen. DSM with lots of mods for autox and drags.
Omicron 10-26-2003, 07:54 PM If I didn't need the back seat, I would have seriously considered a 350Z. As it was, I narrowed my choices down to the Infiniti G35 coupe or the RX-8. The 8 got the nod because of all the problems with the G35.
cueball 10-26-2003, 07:54 PM For $40,000 you could have one hell of an FD. You might be able to get more horsepower out of a Supra, but an FD is so much hotter.
So i guess an FD would be at the top of my list.
moogle 10-26-2003, 08:26 PM In a heart beat a Toyota Supra TT with very low mileage.
lefuton 10-26-2003, 08:27 PM FD...someday
for 40k you can build one heck of an FD
The Supra and the FD are still probably 1, 2 as far as looks go for Japanese cars, and they have plenty of power and modability to back it up. It was hard to leave the 300Z TT of the list as well. I think the 3000Gt still looks like a great car and certainly has tons of potential but it's just too damn heavy. The more I think about it I don't know if the M3 should be 1 on my list or 7, they are just all such great cars. Praticality considered the M3 would be much lower due to repair costs and how poorly it takes to mods compared to the 4 Turbo charged cars in the top 5.

Ike, you post a top ten list on a forum and list that forum's car at the bottom, and then you throw out that the rx-8 is a tossup---so perhaps it really doesn't even belong on the list at all.
I have just added you to my ignore list, I don't think any explanation is nedded. FYI, you're the first person to be on my ignore list.
BTW, supposing one could buy a used MT RX-8 with no options for a price in the low 20s and add mods totaling the high teens to stay in the 40k limit you propose, then my list would begin:
1. Used 04 RX-8 + mods

How come the EVO, STI,S2K, etc. don't get mods too even though they are well under $30K? I'll take some liberty and change your categories to say either of the following:
1) EVO with $10K Mods
2) Federal Elise
The FD would be a beast, but the reliability issues are not something I'd ever want to deal with. The Supras have great power, but the handling is just not up to some of the others here. The Used Vette is too much of a middle-age crisis car and is not my style in terms of driving (add the Cobra to that too). An old modded MR2 is certainly an option, but I'm not knowledgable enough about it to pick it.
Well I was thinking those cars would have warranties and you wouldn't want to mod them right away. but I did say practicality aside... And I only left the Elise off the list because it's not released yet in the US, there's a good chance it would be number one on my list if it was available. By the way I said excluding your current car and you already have an EVO :p I agree with you on the Vette, but they are still great cars. The 03 Cobra doesn't seem to have the same stigma as the Vette but it has it's own stigma :)
RussellP 10-27-2003, 05:36 AM theres no advantage to having an STi over a cobra

Explain that to me, please!
RX8-TX 10-27-2003, 10:13 AM 1.) Used FD + mods (and some spare engines...yeah, I know. But better be prepared than caught with your pants down.)
2.) S2K + optional hardtop.
3.) Used 2nd gen. MR2 + tons of mods
4.) STi - 4.5) EVO (STi has a slight edge in my preference list)
5.) Used 97 Supra TT + mods + with 1000 miles in the ODO and original motor.
6.) G35/350Z
7.) Used M3 E36/E46 + mods
8.) Used C5 Vette
9.) 03 Cobra

Alright, since you shot down my first 2 choices, I'll say this:
FD - If I had unlimited funds and patience.
If not, Modded Supra or MR2.
RotaryStalker 10-27-2003, 12:26 PM 96-97 Acura NSX...Love that targa top...
RotaryStalker
Yeah, a used NSX would be fun, still damn sexy cars. A 240SX with an engine swap would be fun as well.
Psylence 10-27-2003, 02:34 PM Get the STi and weld/fill in the rear door seams! :p
1. Rx-8 6MT. No options. Appearance package. Euro spoiler. 19" Volks.
2. Supra regardless of mileage in good condition. Custom engine swap. (Hope that fits under budget)
3. Used M3
4. Wait for the next Honda S2k.
5. Elise 111S
6. '93 MR2
7. Audi A4
8. Volvo S60R
9. Used NSX
10. VW R32 (when released)
Just biased preferences.
pelucidor 10-27-2003, 03:09 PM Below $40k MSRP and ignoring practicality
1. RX-8 ;)
2. S2K (2003 prettier version)
3. EVO 8 (in black, without wing)
4. G35 Coupe
5. Mini Cooper S Works Edition
6. Mazdaspeed Miata
7. Acura TL 6MT
8. Volvo S60-R
9. Lexus IS300 (slow but bulletproof)
10. Used RX-7 FD (I am scared of used cars else it would be 1.)

I'm just curious as to what exactly you would swap into the Supra  And no I don't think it would fit the budget :)
Depends on the Supra package. I just think I've been watching too much Super2NRtv on Spike tv. They had a half hour basically dedicated to customers who've taken N/A Supra v6's or stock V6's with turbos and added either 1 big custom turbo, or twin turbos larger than stock. All of the Supras dyno-tested varied in hp at the wheel from 550-730.
Got any good ideas? :)

Ahhh you implied an engine swap, that's just a turbo swap. HKS 2835 twins, T88, T72... I would say go wqith one of the 3, and be ready to run race gas all the time if you don't want to run lower boost :p
Psylence 10-28-2003, 08:21 AM Well if we are talkin engine swaps.. what about a rotary into an elise 111s? I think that'd be a damn near perfect ride...
