View Full Version : Announcing Hymee’s Oil Cooler and A/C Condenser Protection Kit Mk1

All,

I finalised some fixture details of the lower grill over the weekend, and also designed and fitted a grill to protect the Oil Cooler from stone impacts.

Based on input from my peers (you guys), I have decided I will supply these kits with the grills powder-coated in black. Today I will get a quote on the powder coating, so tonight I should be able to post a final cost for the kits. I’m pretty sure that the $80 mark will stick. The only other detail I need to finalise is how much shipping will cost, but I am hopeful it would be only in the $10-$20 range within Australia.

http://users.tpg.com.au/adslnt5c/Marko/Images/Dscn007.jpg

http://users.tpg.com.au/adslnt5c/Marko/Images/Dscn5156.jpg

I know a number of you are keen to fit these, so my goal is to ship an initial batch of kits by Friday 31st October at the latest. I will be in the US for a couple of weeks after that with work, so in order to meet your needs, I will attempt to get them out before I go.

Proposed Kit contents:

1 x Condenser grill (Stainless Steel woven mesh, black powder-coat)
1 x Oil cooler grill (Stainless Steel woven mesh, black powder-coat)
1 x Pack of stainless steel screws/nuts/bolts/washers/spring-washers
1 x CD with detailed instructions including colour photographs

I will make an initial batch of 8 kits, and will offer them on a first-in basis.

To secure an order, I would like interested parties to use my forum e-mail link to send me an email to establish initial contact with me. (Click on my "Profile" below, then "Click here to email to Hymee". I prefer that to doing PM’s for this) I will reply with an email providing you with an account number to deposit a $20 deposit. You then need to notify me that the deposit has been made via email attaching a copy of the transaction receipt.

This is about as best as I can come up with at the moment to make the transaction simple, and try to establish some initial trust between both parties. This is a private transaction between forum members and myself, and I do not operate this as a business. This is providing a service to members, not advertising/selling a comercially available product.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Can anyone in the US make these? They look like they are made pretty nicely and will help in protecting the front open grill. Anyone? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler? :)

I can make them for you guys as well. I just need to make 2 oil cooler protectors, instead of one. I'll post more details on "international orders" when I know what you need to do.

PS - I am in the US from 4th November. Maybe I could bring some with me...

Hymee.

Hymee:

I'd buy a set if you bring some when you come to the US in Nov. I'll only need 1 oil cooler protector since I have the auto 8. Keep me posted.

Thanks,
Kevin

You can be lucky taking goods for sale into the USA, but there is always the risk you can get held up with customs. However, if you want do do this, then prepare a customs declaration with your customer details on it, and be ready to show it together with the invoice and purchase order as well. Getting through LAX these days is trying enough without contending with US customs as well. Think about sending it air mail or Australia Post's EMS courier instead. EMS isn't bad, and is way cheaper than DHL or FedEx. Costs are on the Australia Post website, and you can drop the parcels off at your local post office. Even air mail to the USA only takes a week-10 days. It's going to be so cheap for the seppos anyway that an extra $50 or so for courier won't hurt.

Hymee,

You have mail...... I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you will make one for me and send it to the states...... I am just getting so paranoid everytime I hear "sand" hitting the car, or when a Semi pulls out in front of me. Always checking to make sure that the A/C is blowing cold air......

My order is in too. That makes 2 left by my count!

Hymee
10-28-2003, 02:28 AM
So far I have deposits from (in order of appearance)

Lock & Load (paid/picked up)
msydd (paid/shipped)
Timbo (paid/shipped)
tonym (paid/shipped)
pepe (paid/shipped)
D.G.W. (paid/shipped)
my10ae (paid/shipped)
Texagi95 (paid/shipped)

That makes 8. If any pull out, I will advise.

The commercial cost of these including GST and Postage is currently $198 AUD. This includes 1 oil cooler mesh and the powder coating wich I didn't originally plan for. The oil cooler grills took me heaps longer to make than originally planned for - so I will revise my construction method (but not sacrifice quality) for the next batch.

Small problem with shipping though...

My best estimate is the package will be less than 1kg. Fine if it is in a sachel. But in a slender box the "volumeteric weight" rule comes in - it calculates out at nearly 10kg. And I had to get some boxes made especially. Hopefully the P&P will not be more than $35 total (in Australia). Please trust me I am doing the best I can to get the cost down. Freight prices started near $100!!!. FFS.

I got them back from the Powder Coater's today. They look very classy!

If I can get a finalised deposit from labrat and D.G.W. (as per my instructions), I should be able to ship them tomorrow, or Thurdsay. (Then I skip the country - hehehehe)

I just need to write up the instructions tonight.

Cheers,
Hymee.

PS - Thanks for the support guys. I'd like some of you to post your impressions of what I have sent, then I'll see about taking orders for the next batch!

Dear Dr Hymee

I need counselling ....
I am a pristine example of an Aussie Spec Titanium Leather Pack 8 and up until tonight I believed my owner loved me more than anything else in the world.

He pampers me with regular car washes (even if water restrictions mean he has to use a bucket) and services and even buys that expensive oil.

So whats wrong you ask .. welll tonight I find out that he doesn't care enough about me to give me the protection I need .. the protection I DESERVE! I know he didn't mean to work late this week and that he just ran out of time to visit the forum but he knew that the core protectors were pending and he didn't get in soon enouogh....

Tell me Dr Hymee ... it our relationship through ... or can you prescribe some mesh protectors so I can feel spolit again...

H E L P

BVD
10-28-2003, 08:04 AM
Tell your owner that if he really loves you he'd surely know that he should use some protection....

Same here though.... :(

I had the foolish notion that I should wait until I actually had a car before I ordered any bits for it. :p

With a bit of luck I'll be picking it up tomorrow though. :D

So, enjoy your trip Hymee, and I'll keep an eye on this thread for news of the next batch. In the meantime I'll be instructing the car to drive with its mouth closed...

In the meantime I might experiment with a few versions of my own - maybe chook wire, macrame, flywire, perforated cardboard, basket-weave, etc, etc. But then again, maybe not....

Everyone,

The first bacth is allocated. Please accept my most sincere appologies for not being able to fullfil the initial demand. I will make more kits. Just be more cautious of stones and rocks in the meantime.

I will start a list here of all people who have indicated their desire for one of these. As you can see, there are a number from the USA as well.

Pricer01
BVD
Kev
mikeB (USA)
my10ae (USA)
TDS (USA)

Total = 6

It looks like I have some work lined up for me as soon as I get back...

Please email me your intent to purchase and I will add you to this list.

I will try to make the process a little easier next time. Perhaps payment in full up front. That way we can save on triple paperwork! I didn't really want to do that this time, as I wanted to build some trust to start with. Hopefully next time round people will feel comfortable I can deliver, and payment up front won't be a problem.

I am ripping my hair out (almost) just keeping up with 8. And I have to make sure this doesn't impact my real work!

Cheers,
Hymee.

BTW - my right thumb is still recovering from all the plier/cutter work it performed the other night. There is about 400 odd wire to cut for the large grill, and nearly 200 for the small one, plus 30 odd little loops to keep it together. Spot welding might be the go for next time!

Hey i believe you have come accross a potentially lucrative little manufacturing sideline , as long as little JOHNNY HOWARD ,and his friends at the tax department dont get into partnership with you .

HECK with all this demand and lack of supply one could be tempted to place a grill on e-bay and see what the real value of your product would bring .

I could just imagine a fellow from TEXAS telling his friend about his
grill from down under .

MARK

dont worry i wont be re selling mine after all it could become a rare collectors item , being the 1st officially ordered hymee grill .

LOOKINGforward to get thing it on my baby .

Hymee

Schucks L&L,

Do you wan't yours to have a signed badge on it. Hehehe.

Tax department - well if I claimed GST input credits, charged GST, claimed my costs as a tax deduction etc, perhaps maybe. Just doing it for fun, as a hobby. The Government gets is GTS from the stuff I purchase to make them, so it is GST input taxed.

Imagine what the real cost would be if I factored in the overhead of all those other expenses if I ran it as a company.

And for volume - 150 RX-8's to Australia / year... say 10% want a grill... 15/year is hardly going to set me up for life!

EBay - yeah I thought about that. Not just for auction, but as "Buy Now" and let that be the eBay be the central point. But I guess it would just add to the cost somehow, and line someone else's pocket!

Cheers,
Hymee.

PS - I have your kit ready to collect :)

Hymee,

Is there another batch of these coolomatic grills being produced any time soon?

Would be a great excuse for another Sydney to Brisbane cruise ( like I need one ) and from all accounts it sounds like they've done the job nicely?

If so - I'd be looking for a co-pilot ( Sydney siders? ) for the round trip.

Hymee,

So in your rev 2 of the protector, what are your thoughts on rotating the mesh 45 degrees?

Call me fussy (when I'm in a dress maybe) but I tend to think it would be more in keeping with the car's general theme if it was cocked over to the diagonal.

I can appreciate this would be a little more work and would probably result in more waste material ...

your thoughts?

Des,

I have also asked Hymee for a grill kit when the next batch are ready. I am from Sydney as well but I don't have the time to travel to Brisbane. Maybe we can organise something for the Sydney siders who place an order for the next batch?

Kev,

What are your thoughts? Any one else from Sydney placing an order with Hymee?

You don't have to be in Brisbane to get one of Hymee's kits. He will mail it to you registered post. I'm in Newcastle and I got one of Hymee's first 8 kits mailed to me. Postage was only $20.

My thoughts...

Well anything is possible, but somethings are not always practical. Your suggestion is entirely possible, and I even considered it myself.

Here is my list of againsts:

More difficult to cut out.
Perhaps messy edges - cutting the wire grid on the diagonal. would leave lots more daggy bits.
More wastage, but probably not a massive amount.
You basically can't see it anyway.
The way I cut the lower grills off the roll of mesh gives them a gently curve in the vertical plane, that suits the bumper very nicely. I wouldn't want to flatten/recurve on the diagonal - but like I said, anything is possible.
It is black, and you basically can't see it anyway.
It probably wouldn't suit the bottom fastenings as nicely.
Unless you wanted to leave it silver and look ricey, you basically can't see it anyway.

Did I mention you can't see it :p. Therefore I don't think it worth the effort, but if you really want like that, let me know, you might get a special edition.

I thought L&L would have reported his fitment by now. I hope he hasn't had any problems

Hymee
