Was reading miata2rx8's thread n General Discussion regarding engine replacement at 3600 miles, and was wondering if it's as easy to mess around with digital odometers as it is with the older mechanical ones?

Of course one should have any used car inspected before purchasing, but of course many people don't. Alos, changing the odometer from from 100k or 60k or less may not be detectable if the car has a lot of freeway miles.

Are digital odometers controlled by software, and if so, I'm sure there are hacks out there that could be easily used.

Don't know how the data is stored, but it can be made to be un-hackable, like a one way train. Number can only be increase like a digital counter that do not have a reset/decrement function. The only way of possible hack is to locate the chip and replace with a new one. But I'm sure it is embeded in some sophicated network that it cannot be easily remove without replacing the entire unit. That how I would do if I'm to design a bullet proof digital counter.

One best way to reset those numbers is to run high current/voltage to those chip, only then you can reset to zero!!! if those chips didn't get fried first :p
