View Full Version : DIY Rotor Rear Fog light in the making
seikx8 10-26-2003, 12:29 AM Here is a picture of the half done fog light test fitting. Still brainstorming about the type of LEDs or bulbs to use. It's best of both world: It's cheap DIY while getting what I like :D

seikx8 10-26-2003, 11:45 AM Now to think of it, still debating about wheter to mount with three srews to expose the corner or put three LEDs for hilight and mount it using hidden screws inside. Anyway, I will post my final result, now only if I can find a dual bulb holder ;)

The rear fog light for Euro spec models looks like this:

my10ae 11-18-2003, 09:58 PM Any updates on this mod???
seikx8 11-19-2003, 02:42 AM Almost ;) just have to install the darn thing. Was so busy these days! And will be taking a vacation next month. Hopefully, I will have time to take pic of the install this weekend.
huhsler 11-19-2003, 10:29 AM Any legality issues with the rear fog light in the U.S. ?
I saw some unresolved threads on this question.
my10ae 11-19-2003, 10:54 AM Thanks for the update seikx8

Thanks, I missed your post...I actually went for the black look with RX8 on top. My avatar was a friends I did.
It will be nice to see the final version - i heard that the application of the rear fog light was quite complicated
takahashi 11-21-2003, 01:53 AM As it is not an option for Australian model I have the light ship from Japan (Mazda JDM)
I have mine install by the mazda dealer today. It works wodnerfully. Have the DSC button changed to a dual fog light/DSC off (each occupy one half). The wiring is pain. They have to strip off the steering coloum casing the dash board. The front panel (driver side) wire the thing thru the driver side door. thru the boot and have the rear bumper off to wire and cut.
Fortunately if have factory made ALL bumper have bolt sets that ready for fitting (no drill required) ~ Well except the cutting of the rear triangle
Tori
Omicron 11-21-2003, 07:09 PM Takahashi -
Can you tell me please where exactly they cut the rear triangle? I got the same JDM light yesterday, and went to install it today. Problem is, it looks for all the world like the foglight is too big to fit through the triangle!
I wasn't brave enough to start cutting until I posed the question on this forum... where exactly do you cut? The inner edge (around the diameter) of the triangle?
Finally, can you please post a close up pic of the fog light? All the pics I've seen so far have been from like 15 feet away. I need a close up to see how far into the cutout the light sits.
Thanks!
takahashi 11-21-2003, 07:49 PM Did you have the instruction book to come with the lights?
I saw in the instruction book (not with me - still in Mazda dealer - I was going to pick that up Monday). It said that you cut the most inner bit of the triangle from the inside - hence you have to take the bumper off. You still need the inner side of the triangle for supporting the fog light.
If you want the installation booklet I can scan it on Monday or email you a photocopy if you like.
Omicron 11-21-2003, 08:06 PM Man, that's be AWESOME!!! I believe you still have my email address, no?

Yes I have your email...
I think you need a Japanese - English translator as it is in Japanese. Anyhow - the pictures say 1000 words in the booklet and even the Mazda mechanics can read (no offense).
AND yes I think $A200 for labour is kinda cheap :) (I AM F'ing HAPPY)
Still waiting your 6 stacker right... not too long I suppose.
mikeb 11-21-2003, 08:56 PM so its 200 for mazda to install
Omicron 11-21-2003, 09:01 PM Not to worry Steve, I'll figure it out.
Mike, that's $200 Australian.
mikeb 11-21-2003, 09:04 PM ok so how much US for install and fog light?
did you get it from canzoomer
Omicron 11-22-2003, 01:04 PM Yep. The light itself was like $88, as I recall, and comes with nothing but the light. No idea what a dealer would charge to install it, but most likely a coupla hours of labor.
Depending on how you wanted to wire it, you might also need to get the Mazda factory switch, which is about $35 from CanZoomer. Or you could use your own, if you're comfortable tapping into power from somewhere, then running it to the switch/light. I got the factory switch, but may not use it. Initially I plan to tap the rear fog into by rear brake lights, so I have a "low mount" brake light. Think that'll be kinda unique, and will save me a lot of wiring effort. If it's too bright for that, I'll try to get a lower wattage bulb. And if that still doesn't work out, I'll wire it to a dash switch. We'll see.
Problem is, it didn't come with any instructions, and I wasn't willing to go cutting on my rear bumper "underskirt" till I knew for sure it'd fit. Takahashi is going to send me some close up pics of the install, and email me the installation manual. It's in Japanese, but I think I'll be able to figure it out from the diagrams.
I'll keep you all posted.
seikx8 11-23-2003, 01:44 AM Finally got it installed but not wired up:
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7097&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 01:45 AM Still need to hook up those wires to break & running light.
Omicron 11-23-2003, 01:47 AM NICE! Going to post up a full set of directions on how you made, and especially WIRED it?
seikx8 11-23-2003, 01:50 AM closed up

seikx8 11-23-2003, 02:03 AM Mate it with . . .
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7101&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 02:05 AM Wola, you got this:
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7102&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 02:06 AM And the aluminum piece ;)
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7103&stc=1
Omicron 11-23-2003, 03:10 AM Nice! So now a question. That looks like a single filament bulb. If you're going to mate it up with the running AND brake lights, won't you need a dual filament bulb? One filament illuminated with the running lights, and one with the brakes... ?
seikx8 11-23-2003, 11:44 AM I used two bulbs -- I can't find any dual filaments bulb holder that will fit. Was too embarrass to took the ghetto picture (The secondary bulbs was tied by wired to the holding metal piece) :D Anyway, my next upgrade will be using 168/194 bulbs which mean I might need to pay visit to the junkyard :p and I have to worry about water getting in there. Prior to that, I was thinking about building a circuit to controll the brightness, but it was too much work.
With some luck I might be able to get the picture with it on tonight.
Omicron 11-23-2003, 01:19 PM Looking forward to it!
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:22 PM The saga continue. . .
I was pretty surprise to find there is a vent there!
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7130&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:24 PM There is a hole which I think it is for the oem fog light wires pass through.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7131&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:25 PM On the right side, this is the plug for rear license plate light wire pass through.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7132&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:27 PM Remove the rubbers and pass the wire through. It's easier to pass the wire through and pull it our via the license plate light opening then pass the wire down from that license plate light hold. When done install back the rubbers to protect the wire. . .
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7133&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:31 PM Hook up the wire to the fog light . . . For the EOM fog light, there is bracket which will fit in those poles with self tapping screw I believe.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7134&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:32 PM I decide to tap to the break & running light, so I de-pin the left break light harness and solder the wire to those pin. . .
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7135&stc=1
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:38 PM Trying to attach the .avi file, if it doesn't work, I will need to host it else where :p
my10ae 11-23-2003, 07:43 PM you got p/m seikx8
seikx8 11-23-2003, 07:50 PM Guess the .avi file didn't work due to its size. Anyway, here is a peak at the method mounting I use. As you can see, I use two 5w bulbs on the two side and a 8W bulb in the middle. So there you have it, for what it worth I spent less than $50 ;) Around $10 for the bulbs and holders and reflectors which I pickup from pepboy. A piece of aluminum which I have left from last time I made an intercooler probably cost < $5, plus some MIG welding with my broken gas regulator which you can see the horrible aluminum welding. Plus a small bottle of all purpose metal polish compound for around $25 and some sweating into those aluminum polishing and installation which is priceless
Whether it come out good or bad, I do find myself enjoying the work and finding little interesting thing how the car was made.

takahashi 11-24-2003, 01:26 AM Hmmm... The just like another brake light - does it stays on when you want it to?
Omicron 11-24-2003, 12:49 PM Nice job and instructions, seikx8!!!
my10ae 11-24-2003, 12:53 PM OK, so who wants to start mass producing these things? I'd be up for buying one....even if it didn't light up.

Sure it can stay on if you want to. You can wire to turn on by a switch or have multiple bulbs and combine those as you want it to function. In this case, it function as a break light as well as running light at night.
seikx8 11-25-2003, 01:01 AM As for making it for sell? I doubt it will make it in the market since I have no plan on marketing. Maybe someone will be inspired enought to start mass producing; especially the aluminum polished pieces can be cut and mass produce. ;)
RX8Mongoose 05-17-2004, 05:25 PM lets get this thread goin' again!
has anyone else done this mod?
i want to get some type of light down there...even if it's just a red LED that's spliced into the running lights
robertdot 05-17-2004, 07:10 PM My thoughts: I'm not too fond of the big aluminum thing, so I was wondering if some other system might be rigged up with a bit of lexan / plexiglass, some reflective "chromed" plastic and some red LEDs (since I've been installing the "stealthed" bulbs everywhere else, I wouldn't want to deviate). I reckon you could tap the same wires for it and run the LED.
If I can get time in the next week or so, I'll see if I can come up with anything.
romulus 05-17-2004, 11:32 PM here is what I did
http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?threadid=25890&highlight=rear+fog+light
RX8Mongoose 05-18-2004, 12:36 AM nicely done romulus...thats more the route i want to take
don't like the full aluminum piece that some put in, but i'm not convinced yet i like the fog light down there
i'm almost thinking something indirect, a nice glow without even seeing the bulb or LED itself...but since that piece back there is solid, that might not be an option without getting clever...but thats where all the fun is, right? :D
mkztg 01-22-2006, 01:59 AM I know this thread is going on 2 years old but where are the pics? If the pics were still here this DIY would still hold some value.
Hopefully some of the people who worked on this thread still have pics they can repost.
Thanks.
